The results indicated that by retarding spark time 10 from MBT with 30% of hydrogen increased thermal efficiency and natural gas emission while decreased NOx emission compared with engine work on natural gas. ... Ignition timing is heavily related to flame speed, which has great effect on SI engines performance.

How do you reduce NOx emissions?

One way of controlling NOx emissions is to use low-nitrogen fuels. Another is to modify combustion conditions to generate less NOx. Flue gas treatment techniques, such as selective cata- lytic reduction (SCR) processes, can remove NOx.

Does timing affect emissions?

An engine with excessively advanced timing will run well, but is prone to ping (harmful abnormal combustion) and produce excessive NOx. Retarded timing reduces engine performance, fuel economy and emissions.

How do you reduce NOx in a diesel engine?

NOx emission can be reduced by primary methods such as retard injection, fuel nozzle modification, change of compression ratio, water direct injection, water emulsification, exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and secondary method such as selective catalytic reduction (SCR).

Which of the following is used to reduce NOx during in cylinder combustion?

Abstract: Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) is an effective strategy to control NOx emissions from diesel engines. The EGR reduces NOx through lowering the oxygen concentration in the combustion chamber, as well as through heat absorption.

HEX³ Technology - Reducing NOx to a minimum

Does lower compression ratios reduce NOx emissions?

A low compression ratio can improve NOx due to low combustion temperature. ... Low compression ratio of 15.2 could reduce NOx by about 5%, when EGR rate and main timing were adjusted to keep same PM emission.

Which exhaust gas emission does an NOx adsorber catalyst attempt to reduce?

Ammonia emissions produced during regeneration of the NOx adsorber can be stored in the washcoat of a downstream SCR catalyst, and utilized to reduce NOx emissions that pass through the NOx adsorber [1477] .

What causes high NOx in diesel engines?

Q. Why are NOx gases produced? High temperature combustion of fuels where the temperature is hot enough (above about 1300°C/ 2370°F) to oxidise some of the nitrogen in air to NOx gases. This includes burning hydrogen, as it burns at a very high temperature. Comments on diesel engines are shown below.

At what temperature is NOx formed?

Thermal NOx is formed when nitrogen and oxygen in the combustion air combine with one another at the high temperatures in a flame. Thermal NOx makes up the majority of NOx formed during the combustion of gases and light oils. The rate of NOx formation generally increases significantly above 2,800°F flame temperature.

What causes excessive NOx emissions?

High NOx emissions can occur when an engine's air-fuel mixture is too lean. ... This could be caused by a problem with the vehicle's oxygen sensor, malfunctioning air flow and coolant sensors or a leak in the fuel system.

What will retarding timing do?

Retarding the timing means the plug fires later in the compression stroke (closer to TDC). Retarding the timing can help reduce Detonation. ... This is because the cylinder pressure won't reach it's max until the piston is already headed back down on the Power Stroke.

Does advancing timing increase fuel consumption?

TIMING ADVANCEAs engine rpm increases, it is necessary to advance the ignition timing. If not, the burning process in the combustion chamber would take longer than the speeding piston would permit, resulting in an incomplete burn.

What happens if timing is too far advanced?

Overheating. If ignition timing is too far advanced, it will cause the fuel-and-air mixture to ignite too early in the combustion cycle. This can cause the amount of heat generated by the combustion process to increase and lead to overheating of the engine.

Does excess air reduce NOx?

Because the mixing of air and fuel can never be perfect, some excess air is always required to ensure complete combustion. By limiting this excess amount of air, less NOx is likely to form. However, if too little excess air is available, the combustibles in the flue gas rise dramatically.

Does a catalytic converter reduce NOx?

Catalytic Converters - Non-Selective Catalytic Reduction System. ... For proper operation of a NSCR system, the combustion process must occur with an air/fuel ratio slightly fuel-rich of stoichiometry. In the presence of the catalyst under this condition, NOx is reduced by the CO, resulting in nitrogen and carbon dioxide.

How do you reduce NOx emissions in natural gas engines?

Lean NOx trap (also known as NOx adsorber) catalysts have been proven to reduce NOx emissions in lean exhaust at high reduction efficiencies (>90%). Lean NOx traps have been demonstrated on lean burn diesel and gasoline reciprocating engines and on natural gas-fired turbines.

Does NOx increase with temperature?

Historical data show that industrial burners emit more NOx when the combustion air temperature is higher and is recognised in API 535:2 “NOx production is favored by high temperatures. Local flame temperatures and NOx concentration will increase as the temperature of the combustion air increases.”

Do petrol engines emit NOx?

Among the air pollutants gasoline and diesel engines emit are oxides of nitrogen—NO and NO₂, generically abbreviated as NOx. Nitrogen oxides have harmful direct effects on human health, and indirect effects through the damage they do to agricultural crops and ecosystems.

How can we reduce SOX and NOx in thermal power plant?

1. Switching the low sulphur fuel.
2. Desulfurization the fuel.
3. Utilizing a flue gas desulfurization ( FGD ) system.
4. Combustion control techniques.

How do you fix high NOx?

The solution to this problem is called De-Carbonizing. It usually costs around two labor hours at a smog check repair station. It will remove a good amount of carbon out of an engine. This will increase combustion space, lower compression and lower NOx.

Can bad spark plugs cause high NOx?

If the base timing is advanced too far, the spark plug will ignite the air fuel mixture early, causing the combustion temperature to rise as the compression stroke continues, causing NOx to form. ... This will result in high HC, low CO, high O2, low CO2, and high NOx.

Does NOx cause smog?

Nitric oxide (NOx)

NOx can cause serious health damage to humans, including respiratory diseases. NOx is also responsible for smog and the typical brown cloud that covers larger cities and produces poor air quality. ... NOx reacts with volatile organic compounds in the presence of sunlight and forms ground-level ozone.

Does NOx trap heat?

Like other greenhouse gases, nitrous oxide absorbs radiation and traps heat in the atmosphere, where it can live for an average of 114 years, according to the EPA. ... One pound of N2O warms the atmosphere about 300 times the amount that one pound of carbon dioxide does over a 100 year timescale.

How lean NOx trap works?

Catalytic Converters - Lean NOx Trap

Under lean air to fuel operation, NOx reacts to form NO2 over a platinum catalyst followed by reaction with the Barium compound to form BaNO3. Following a certain amount of lean operation, the trapping function will become saturated and must be regenerated.

What type of catalyst is used in NOx adsorber?

Washcoat. Alumina. NOx adsorber washcoats are typically based on γ-Al₂O₃, which is also the main washcoat material in gasoline three-way catalysts. A common reference NOx adsorber catalyst consists of Pt-BaO/Al₂O₃ with a Ba loading in the range of 4-20%.
