When an aircraft carrier sits on water, partly submerged, the water pressure is balanced in every direction except upward; in other words, there is a net force (called upthrust) supporting the boat from underneath. The boat sinks into the water, pulled down by its weight and pushed up by the upthrust.

Can a livewell sink a boat?

As mentioned, livewells/baitwells are notorious for sinking boats. I tore mine out and permanently plugged them. Another thing is overloading the stern of a boat.

Why would a pontoon boat sink?

Poor weight distribution, using the wrong motors, having water in the pontoons, inappropriate handling of the vessel especially in waves and chop, and using the boat in the type of very harsh conditions it was not designed to be used in, are all things that can cause a pontoon boat to sink.

Are pontoons filled with foam?

Although there are foamed-filled tubes, most pontoon tubes are hollow. Some pontoons are filled with air to help strengthen the inner walls of the tube and to also check for leaks. Many modern hollow pontoon tubes are chambered, being divided inside into sections.

How should a pontoon boat sit in the water?

A good rule of thumb is that about half the log or less of the pontoon should be under the water. So, for a 32-inch log, about 16 inches should be visible and 16 inches in the water. The largest influence on how a pontoon boat sits in the water is weight and weight placement.

What to do if pontoon takes on water?

1. Keep an eye on the skies and look out for wind approaching.
2. If there is a storm coming, get off the water.
3. If you don't have time to get back to shore, considering anchoring the pontoon.
4. Don't try to force the turn too much in the wind.

How much water does it take to float a pontoon boat?

It's often possible for an average pontoon to be safely navigated through water that is two feet in depth. But, this can be a risky process as there may be unexpected hazards in the water which could cause damage to the motor of your boat.

Can you fish off a pontoon boat?

Beyond accouterments, anglers will find that a pontoon's lay-out is excellent for fishing. Broad decks with plenty of pedestal seating options mean that foot-for-foot, more peoples can fish from a pontoon than from a V-hull boat.
