Most water in the U.S. is treated with some level of chlorine in order to disinfect the water supply. It has been found that chlorine can cause oxidation on the inner wall of PEX piping, eventually resulting in failure.

Does chlorine damage PEX pipe?

Chlorine degradation of PEX occurs when the chlorine in drinking water, which is added to keep it clean and safe for human consumption, attacks the PEX piping, breaking down molecular bonds, resulting in micro-cracks that gradually expand to the point of a pipe failure.

Why is PEX plumbing bad?

PEX failures

Piping fails when the pipes are exposed to chlorine that is within the water, exposure to direct sunlight before its installation. Furthermore PEX pipe is vulnerable when it comes in contact with such solutions as petroleum products and oxygen. It can leach toxic chemicals from pipe material also.

Can bacteria grow in PEX pipe?

Biofilms that form in residential water pipes can include dangerous bacteria such as e. ... Studies have shown that PEX piping has a comparatively high biofilm formation potential (see image below), possibly due to its microscopically rough internal surface that creates an ideal environment for biofilm growth.

Is PEX piping resistant to chemicals?

Our PEX Tubing is pressure rated (and warranted) for water. ... Note that we do not recommend using PEX Tubing with Chemicals at temperatures over 180°F. Although PEX Tubing is considered fully resistant to many chemicals, we recommend a reduction of the maximum pressure applied at 180°F to 80%.

Will PEX pipe freeze and burst?

Due to its flexibility, PEX has a small margin of expansion under the damaging pressure caused by ice formation. If the weather gets cold enough, PEX pipes can and will freeze like any plumbing. However, PEX may be less likely to rupture as a result of freezing.

How long does PEX last in chlorinated?

While the ASTM F2023 test requires a calculated 50 year minimum time to failure under the conditions of the test, elevated pressure and/or temperatures in the presence of chlorinated water can result in rapid PEX failure, sometimes in less than 10 years.

Does PEX have phthalates?

In recent years, the use of cross-linked polyethylene (PEX) pipe has increased dramatically, yet the potential for leaching of phthalates, which are endocrine disrupting compounds associated with adverse reproductive effects in humans, has not been examined.

Does PEX leach chemicals into water?
