(iii) Water harvesting aids in soil conservation as it reduces soil erosion and flood hazards by collecting rainwater and reducing the flow of water which causes the removal of fertile top soil.

Why is water harvesting in soil conservation?

The harvesting of the rainwater on a hill on a slope can prevent soil erosion as that is faced by the running water after the heavy rainfall and reduces the time to collect water and can help the households to become water independent, especially when harvesting with the rainfall to roof.

How does water harvest aid in soil conservation?

It reduces soil erosion and flood hazards by collecting rainwater and reducing the flow of stormwater to prevent urban flooding. Most buildings that utilize rainwater harvesting systems have a built-in catchment area on top of the roof, which has a capacity of collecting large volumes of water in case of rainstorms.

How shelterbelts helps in the conservation of soil?

Answer: Shelter belts are usually a row of trees along fence lines. ... Field shelter belts Reduce soil erosion by wind, conserve soil moisture and reduce wind damages to crops. They complement good crop residue management and other conservation practices to protect the soil.

How water harvesting techniques are useful?

Water harvesting techniques gather water from an area termed the 'catchment area' and channel it to the cropping area or wherever it is required. Conservation techniques conserve water within the biomass and the soil by reducing run-off and keeping the water where it falls, as much as possible.

Why is water conservation important?

Conserving water is important because it keeps water pure and clean while protecting the environment. Conserving water means using our water supply wisely and be responsible. ... This requires the use of strategies that includes reducing wastage, prevent damaging water quality, and improve water management.

What is the benefit of water conservation?

Reducing our water usages reduces the energy required to process and deliver it to homes, businesses, farms, and communities, which, in turn, helps to reduce pollution and conserve fuel resources. It makes water available for recreational purposes.

Why shelterbelts are an ideal soil conservation method for desert regions?

Shelter belts: In this method of soil conservation trees are planted in a row to check the wind movement so that the soil layer can be protected. This method is useful mainly in the coastal and dry regions. ... This method prevents formation of gullies and further soil loss.

What are the benefits of shelterbelts?

Field shelterbelts increase yields of field and forage crops throughout the world. The increases are due to reduced wind erosion, improved microclimate, snow retention and reduced crop damage by high winds.

Why are shelterbelts grown?

Shelter belts are in form of trees and shrubs. The shelter belts are thus grown to reduce the impact of the Tsunami in the event of occurrence. They are also a source of income to those who plant them for commercial purposes.

What is the main aim of water harvesting structures?

Major objectives and advantages of rainwater harvesting are : To meet the increasing demands of water. To supplement groundwater supplies during lean seasons. To raise the water table by recharging groundwater.

Why is rain water harvesting important in India give two reasons?

(i) India has seasonal erratic and uneven rainfall. Also, in the dry season, some parts of India have scarcity of water, e.g. in Rajasthan. (ii) With the help of rainwater harvesting techniques, water can be conserved and used during the dry season.

What are the water conservation strategies?

• Decreasing run-off losses: ...
• Reducing evaporation losses: ...
• Storing water in soil: ...
• Reducing irrigation losses: ...
• Reuse of water: ...
• Preventing wastage of water: ...
• Increasing block pricing:

Why is the conservation of soil a natural resource?

We need to conserve soil because of the following reasons: Soil is vital part of our eco system and is the foundation of plant, animal and human life. Plants grow on soil and play an important role in regulating the climate of a region. In absence of plants, the region becomes inhabitable.

What is the purpose of rain water harvesting Mcq?

Explanation: Rainwater harvesting helps to store the rain water and it can be used during the scarcity of water. We can use as per convince either directly or for recharging groundwater as the rain falling on the surface to flow away fast.

What is a water harvesting?

The term 'water harvesting' generally refers to the collection of rainstorm-generated runoff from a particular area (a catchment) in order to provide water for human, animal, or crop use.

How does shelterbelts prevent soil erosion?

Shelter belts are usually a row of trees along fence lines. They are planted mainly to protect animals or crops from cold winds. Field shelter belts Reduce soil erosion by wind, conserve soil moisture and reduce wind damages to crops.

What are the basic reason why we plant windbreaks?

Windbreaks are rows of trees or shrubs that reduce the force of the wind. They can reduce soil erosion, increase crop yields and protect livestock from heat and cold. Windbreaks can shield buildings and roads from drifting snow. They beautify the landscape and provide travel routes and habitat for wildlife.

What is the difference between windbreaks and shelterbelts?

a) Shape and Composition: Shelterbelts have a spiracle, triangular shape by raising tall trees in the centre. ... Wind-breaks are strips of trees and or shrubs planted to protect fields, homes cannels or other areas from wind and blowing soil or sand.

What is the importance of shelterbelts in desert?

Explanation: 1] it restricts soil erosion. 2] stabilization of sand dunes. 3] protects growing plants.

Which method of soil conservation is appropriate for deserts?

Terracing is the method to check the soil erosion in desert region. Explanation: The process that is used to check the soil erosion in desert area is referred as Terracing. It is soil conservation practice that can be implemented to prevent the rainfall runoff on sloping land form gathering and cause serious erosion.

Is overdrawing of ground water a measure for soil conservation?

(d) Overdrawing of ground water

Excess pumping will reduce the table of soil water and prohibit wells from touching soil. When help is withdrawn below the field, land subsidence happens. This is mostly triggered when soils crumble, are compact and fall due to human action , particularly the overuse of soil water.

How does water conservation help the environment?

Using water-saving techniques can save you money and diverts less water from our rivers, bays, and estuaries, which helps keep the environment healthy. It can also reduce water and wastewater treatment costs and the amount of energy used to treat, pump, and heat water.

How does conservation help the environment?

Conservation is the care and protection of these resources so that they can persist for future generations. It includes maintaining diversity of species, genes, and ecosystems, as well as functions of the environment, such as nutrient cycling. ... Declining biodiversity is closely intertwined with species extinction.

Why do we need to protect and conserve freshwater resources?

Conserving Water

Saving water helps to protect the environment. By not wasting water, you save it for fish and animals that depend on it. You also protect drinking water supplies. And wastewater treatment plants won't have to work as hard if there is less water going down the drain.
