The reason for this lies in the measurements of the interior angles of a regular polygon. For a regular polygon to tessellate the plane, each interior angle must be a divisor of 360° because then there won't be any gaps where the polygons meet at each vertex.

Can a regular decagon tessellate?

A regular decagon does not tessellate. A regular polygon is a two-dimensional shape with straight sides that all have equal length.

What makes a shape tessellate?

A tessellation is a pattern created with identical shapes which fit together with no gaps. Regular polygons tessellate if the interior angles can be added together to make 360°.

Will a regular triangle tessellate?

The simplest polygons have three sides, so we begin with triangles: All triangles tessellate. ... The sum of angles of any triangle is 180°. Moving up from triangles, we turn to four sided polygons, the quadrilaterals.

What is the necessary conditions for regular shapes to tessellate?

All regular polygons that meet must have a common 360 degree vertex in order to be used in a tessellation. A vertex is a point where two sides come together to form an angle. For example, in an equilateral triangle, two sides come together to form a 60 degree angle.

12.1 Tessellations of Regular and Irregular Polygons

Why can they tessellate?

A regular polygon can only tessellate the plane when its interior angle (in degrees) divides 360 (this is because an integral number of them must meet at a vertex). This condition is met for equilateral triangles, squares, and regular hexagons.

Why are tessellations important in real life?

Since tessellations have patterns made from small sets of tiles they could be used for different counting activities. ... Tiles used in tessellations can be used for measuring distances. Once students know what the length is of the sides of the different tiles, they could use the information to measure distances.

Why do regular octagons not tessellate?

Why or why not? It is not possible to tile the plane using only octagons. Two octagons have angle measures that sum to 270° (135° + 135°), leaving a gap of 90°. Three octagons surrounding a point on the plane would have angle measures that sum to 405°, which would cause an overlap of 45°.

Does a Dodecagon tessellate?

We can see from this that the pentagon, hexagon, octagon, and dodecagon tesselate with one skipped vertex. The corresponding holes are shaped decagon, hexagon, square, and triangle.

How do you know if a regular polygon will tessellate?

A figure will tessellate if it is a regular geometric figure and if the sides all fit together perfectly with no gaps.

What are the 3 rules to tessellate?

• RULE #1: The tessellation must tile a floor (that goes on forever) with no overlapping or gaps.
• RULE #2: The tiles must be regular polygons - and all the same.
• RULE #3: Each vertex must look the same.

Do octagons fit together?

There are only three regular shapes that tessellate – the square, the equilateral triangle, and the regular hexagon. All other regular shapes, like the regular pentagon and regular octagon, do not tessellate on their own. ... For instance, you can make a tessellation with squares and regular octagons used together.

How are tessellations formed?

A tessellation is created when a shape is repeated over and over again covering a plane without any gaps or overlaps. Another word for a tessellation is a tiling.

Does a kite tessellate?

Yes, a kite does tessellate, meaning we can create a tessellation using a kite.

What kinds of regular polygons can be used for regular tessellations?

Only three regular polygons (shapes with all sides and angles equal) can form a tessellation by themselves—triangles, squares, and hexagons.

What are regular tessellations?

A regular tessellation is one made using only one regular polygon. A semi-regular tessellation uses two or more regular polygons. ... A tessellation can be described by the shapes that meet at each vertex, or a corner point. In a tessellation, the shapes that appear at every vertex follow the same pattern of shapes.

How many regular tessellations are possible?

A regular tessellation is a highly symmetric, edge-to-edge tiling made up of regular polygons, all of the same shape. There are only three regular tessellations: those made up of equilateral triangles, squares, or regular hexagons.

How many semi-regular tessellations can be produced?

Lesson Summary

There are a lot of tessellations; however, there are only eight semi-regular-tessellations. A semi-regular tessellation is made up of two or more regular polygons, which have equal sides and angles that are arranged the same at every vertex.

Why do octagons tessellate?

A shape will tessellate if its vertices can have a sum of 360˚ . In an equilateral triangle, each vertex is 60˚ . Thus, 6 triangles can come together at every point because 6×60˚=360˚ . This also explains why squares and hexagons tessellate, but other polygons like pentagons won't.

Which of the following regular polygons will not tessellate by itself?

Answer and Explanation: A regular decagon does not tessellate. A regular polygon is a two-dimensional shape with straight sides that all have equal length. As it turns out, there are only three regular polygons that can be used to tessellate the plane: regular triangles, regular quadrilaterals, and regular hexagons.

Is it possible to create a regular tessellation with a regular Heptagon?

Regular tessellations The simplest kind of tessellation is called a regular tessellation, in which we cover the plane entirely with copies of a single shape that has equal sides. ... It's impossible to tessellate with regular pentagons (5 sides), heptagons (7 sides), octagons (8 sides) or any other number.

Where do you see tessellations in real life?

Tessellations can be found in many areas of life. Art, architecture, hobbies, and many other areas hold examples of tessellations found in our everyday surroundings. Specific examples include oriental carpets, quilts, origami, Islamic architecture, and the are of M. C. Escher.

Where can tessellations be found in nature?

Tessellations can be found on honeycombs, pineapples, and various animals, including dragonflies, snakes, and giraffes.

Why is 360 degree important tessellation?

The fact that the angles add up to 180 degrees or 360 degrees is one of the reasons that triangles and quadrilaterals can tile: In any tessellation, the sum of the angles around every vertex must add to a full turn (360 degrees), which can be done by using each of the angles in a triangle twice or by using all four ...
