The maximum capacity of a shell to hold electrons is 8. The shells of an atom cannot accommodate more than 8 electrons, even if it has a capacity to accommodate more electrons. ... According to this rule, atoms gain, loose or share electrons to achieve the stable configuration similar to the nearest noble gas.

Why are there 8 electrons in the outer shell?

The Significance of “8” in Chemistry

The rule of 8 or the Octet rule is the tendency of atoms to have eight electrons in their valence shell. Eight electrons in this final shell allow atoms to be stable and non-reactive. ... Atoms tend to be reactive when their valence shell (or outermost shell) is incomplete.

When there are 8 electrons in the outer shell?

The octet rule is a chemical rule of thumb that reflects the theory that main-group elements tend to bond in such a way that each atom has eight electrons in its valence shell, giving it the same electronic configuration as a noble gas.

What is the element with 8 electrons?

So... for the element of OXYGEN, you already know that the atomic number tells you the number of electrons. That means there are 8 electrons in an oxygen atom.

Which element has 8 protons 8 neutrons 8 electrons?

An oxygen atom usually has 8 protons, 8 neutrons, and 8 electrons. Looking at the periodic table, oxygen has atomic number 8 and atomic weight 15.999.

Why last Shell can't have more than 8 electrons ? | Electronic Configuration Explained | E.C 02 |

What elements have 8 electrons in their outer shell?

Neon and argon have 8 electrons in their outermost shells. The elements which have 8 electrons in the outermost shell or in the valence shell, are known as the noble gases.

Why is 8 The maximum number of valence electrons?

This is because of the quantum nature of the atoms, where electrons are organized in shells: the first (named the K shell) has 2 electrons, the second (L-shell) has 8, the third (M shell) has 18. Atoms combine into molecules by trying in most cases to have valence electrons entirely filling a shell.

Why do atoms prefer 8 electrons?

A complete octet is very stable because all orbitals will be full. Atoms with greater stability have less energy, so a reaction that increases the stability of the atoms will release energy in the form of heat or light. A stable arrangement is attended when the atom is surrounded by eight electrons.

Why do electrons want a full outer shell?

Atoms want a full outer shell because it completes all the gaps in the outside. With no gaps, other electrons don't want to fit into those spaces. For example, a noble gas like Neon has a full outer shell. It doesn't react with other chemicals because the electrons from other chemicals can't fall in anywhere.

In which of the following does every atom has 8 electrons in its valence shell?

Argon an atom has 8 electrons in its valence shell but its valency is not 8. explain.

Why do atoms gain and lose electrons to have eight electrons in the valence shell?

When atoms have fewer than eight electrons, they tend to react and form more stable compounds. Atoms may lose, gain or share their valence electrons to achieve eight electronic configuration. Thus an atom will continue to form bond until it achieves eight electrons in the outermost shell.

Can there be more than 8 electrons in a shell?

So, the concept of a shell is not at all limited to 8 electrons. In fact, this is the maximum number of electrons only for the second shell! A shell with a high value of n has a great any orbitals within it, and can hold many electrons.

Which element can accommodate more than 8 electrons in its valence shell?

Sulfur, phosphorus, silicon, and chlorine are common examples of elements that form an expanded octet. Phosphorus pentachloride (PCl₅) and sulfur hexafluoride (SF₆) are examples of molecules that deviate from the octet rule by having more than 8 electrons around the central atom.

Do all ions have 8 valence electrons?

Most atoms do not have eight electrons in their valence electron shell. Some atoms have only a few electrons in their outer shell, while some atoms lack only one or two electrons to have an octet.

Does the third shell have 8 or 18 electrons?

In this sense the third shell can hold 8 electrons. 4s2 not the third shell, but the next 10 electrons go into the 3d orbitals that are part of the third shell but shown on the fourth shell level. ... So the third shell can be considered to hold 8 or 18 electrons but in total the third shell can hold 18 electrons.

How many electrons are there in its outermost shell?

This is known as the octet rule, which states, with the exception of the innermost shell, that atoms are more stable energetically when they have eight electrons in their valence shell, the outermost electron shell.

What family has 8 valence electrons?

Noble Gases The Group 18 elements are the noble gases. Atoms of the noble gases have 8 valence electrons, except for helium, which has 2.

Why can Xenon have more than 8 valence electrons?

Xe does not follow the octet rule. It actually bonds. It will hold more than 8 electrons. Xenon having valence electrons in the 4th energy level, will also have access to the 4d sublevel, thus allowing for more than 8 electrons.

Which of the following atoms can have more than 8 outermost electrons?

Sulfur, phosphorus, silicon, and chlorine are common examples of elements that form an expanded octet. Phosphorus pentachloride (PCl₅) and sulfur hexafluoride (SF₆) are examples of molecules that deviate from the octet rule by having more than 8 electrons around the central atom.

Which of the following atoms can have more than 8 outermost electrons when it forms a covalent compound?

Answer: Only atoms with empty d orbital can achieve more than 8 electrons in a covalent bond. The electronic configuration of sulphur in ground state is [Ne]3s2 3p4.

Why is 3rd shell 8 or 18?

Each shell can contain only a fixed number of electrons, up to two electrons can hold the first shell, up to eight (2 + 6) electrons can hold the second shell, up to 18 (2 + 6 + 10) can hold the third shell and so on. ...

Why can iodine have 10 electrons?

So, iodine can use all of these electrons in chemical bonding: 2 in the 5s, 5 in the 5p and up to 10 in the 4d, although it only needs to use 4 of its 4d electrons to do the bonding in this molecule. Hence it can have more than 8 electrons involved in its bonding.

Can an atom make 8 bonds?

Carbon the most common atom in organic compounds can form four bonds because it has 4 valence electrons. ... It has 5 valence electrons. So it needs 3 more to fill up its octet. So it can form three, or at most four bonds.

Why are Group IIA elements likely to be positively when form compounds while group via Viia elements are likely to be negatively charged?

The alkali metals (the IA elements) lose a single electron to form a cation with a 1+ charge. The alkaline earth metals (IIA elements) lose two electrons to form a 2+ cation. ... The halogens (VIIA elements) all have seven valence electrons. All the halogens gain a single electron to fill their valence energy level.

Why do representative elements tend to form bonds giving them a total of 8 valence electrons?

Why do representative elements tend to form bonds giving them a total of 8 valence electrons? octet rule requires 8 Valence electrons 3. How is the structure around a given atom related to repulsion between.
