The benefits of matched microphones are that a pair would perform exactly alike, thus making a stereo pair behave in a way that makes a very accurate stereo recording (that's just one example). ... Most manufacturers do not even offer “matched” pairs of mics anymore because of this.

What does a matched pair of microphones mean?

A "matched pair" is a set of two microphones that sound the same. ... Those specs are just a technical way to express that the two mics sound essentially identical. (Beware of companies that only match for sensitivity, or limit the frequency range matching to a few octaves in the middle of the audible range.)

Why did they tape two microphones together?

Using two mics for noise cancellation. Combining outputs of both at equal gains, but in opposite polarities, will cancel ambient noise from each to a certain degree. ... Both microphones must be able to hear the sound source directly.

What is a stereo pair microphone?

Stereo recording is a technique involving the use of two microphones to simultaneously record one instrument. The mono signals from each microphone are assigned to the left and right channels of a stereo track to create a sense of width in the recording.

Do you need two microphones to record in stereo?

A Stereo Microphone is a device that can input a Mono source and output a Stereo sound. You need two mics to capture a Stereo sound so there will always be 2 capsules in the setup to accomplish this. Using a Stereo Mic has a lot of differences right off the bat.

What are XY microphones?

The X-Y technique consists of two identical cardioid microphones, placed on top of each other while facing away from each other at a 90 degree angle.

Why do speakers have two microphones?

There are two main reasons for this two mic setup; one is for redundancy. If one microphone should fail, they are able to receive the feed from the other. The second reason is that one mic typically feeds the in house PA system while the other feeds the press/broadcast.

Why did Peter Gabriel use two microphones?

This concert was partly filmed to be shown on French TV, so it stands to reason that one microphone fed the house PA system (or Genesis' own) and the other was fed to tape for the benefit of the broadcast. The footage can be viewed on Youtube.

Why does Ozzy use two mics?

Check out the two vocal mics taped together. It was a common technique at the time. It was usually done to reduce feedback by flipping the phase of one microphone (for a longer explanation scroll down to the “microphones” section of this Grateful Dead stage show breakdown).

What is a double microphone?

Adaptive Dual Microphone (ADM) is a digital signal processing technology creating a directional or noise-canceling microphone using just two omnidirectional microphones. ... In the end-fire configuration, the signal source (user's mouth) is intended to be on the axis (line connecting the two microphones).

How do you record vocals on two microphones?

Decide on Mic Placement

If you do want the two mics to be virtually exchangeable, keep their capsules close together while keeping them in phase as much as possible so that the vocal hits them at the same time. Many engineers will flip one mic upside down and position them grille-to-grille nearly touching.

Is a matched pair necessary?

Matching is only needed when the tolerances are so wide in the first place that there are noticeable differences from one unit to another, which just isn't the case with most modern designs.

Are Matched Pairs important?

Is a matched pair of mics necessary for stereo recording? Even small differences in the polar pattern and frequency response of the two mics in an X-Y pair will have an adverse effects on stereo image. Using a matched pair — these are Rode NT5s — is recommended.

Are condenser mics stereo?

Do microphones output mono or stereo signals? Microphones convert sound waves to audio signals via mic capsules. Most mics have one capsule that outputs one signal, making them mono devices. Some mics have multiple capsules and output multiple mono signals (which could be mixed in stereo).

What mic does Peter Gabriel use?

For Gabriel's voice, Chappell often used a Sony C800 valve mic in combination with a Shure SM58, run through external mic amps like the Amek or Neve. "It depends on the time or the song, there are lots of different ways really.

What microphone does US President use?

Quick Answer: Since 1965, every President of the United States has used a Shure SM57 as the official lectern microphone.

What is the 3 1 rule?

When using two microphones to record a source, normally you will get the best results by placing the second mic no closer than three times the distance from the first mic that the first mic is from the source. This is known as the “3:1 Rule of Microphone Placement.”

What is spot Micing?

Spot miking (also called close miking) involves placing your microphone within a couple of feet of the sound source. Home recordists use this technique most often because it adds little of the room (the reverb and delay) to the recorded sound. The following illustration shows the close miking placement.

What is AB mic?

A-B Stereo

This stereo mic technique involves spacing a pair of cardioid or omnidirectional microphones apart in such a way that they cover the space but don't create phase issues for each other. Some also add a third center microphone to strengthen the center image. Depending on the space, this may not be possible.

What are stereo mics for?

A stereo mic would be used for ambiance. A stereo recording on video creates more of a sense of place, or a listening environment, than a mono mic can. A stereo microphone is important when recording live music, which can come alive in two-channel sound.

What is Ortf mic placement?

In an ORTF pair, it's the backside of the microphones that are near touching, rather than the front-side. The capsules are spaced about 17cm, or just over 6.5 inches, apart. The angle is slightly wider than that of XY, at 110 degrees.
