A combination of susceptible anatomy and a lifetime of wear and tear can cause mechanical abrasion and impingement of the supraspinatus on the acromion bone. Aging of the rotator cuff tendon. As we age, the quality of our tendons and the blood supply to the tendons diminishes, making the tendons susceptible to tearing.

Why is supraspinatus most commonly injured?

The supraspinatus tendon is the most commonly injured tendon of the four tendons because it lies predominantly in the space between the acromion and the humeral head.

What muscle in the shoulder joint is most susceptible to injury?

The most frequently injured group of muscles and tendons within the shoulder is the rotator cuff. The rotator cuff originates at the scapula (shoulder blade) and attaches to the head of the humerus (arm bone). It stabilizes the glenohumeral joint by hugging the rounded humeral head to the concave glenoid cavity.

Why is the shoulder vulnerable to injury?

In fact, shoulders are the most commonly injured joints in the body. The unique and complex anatomy of the shoulder makes it the joint with the greatest range of motion but the least stability. Thus, it is more susceptible to strain, repetitive injuries and aging than other joints.

Why are rotator cuff tendons so vulnerable to injury?

Tendons in the rotator cuff can be injured easily because they move within a tight space. When the shoulder is turned or lifted at the limit of its natural range of movement, the tendons in this tight space are moved, too.

What is supraspinatus muscle?

Description. Supraspinatus is the smallest of the 4 muscles which comprise the Rotator Cuff of the shoulder joint specifically in the supraspinatus fossa. It travels underneath the acromion.

How does a supraspinatus tear occur?

Supraspinatus tear can be caused by lifting something too heavy, falling on your arm, or dislocating your shoulder. However, host cases are the result of the tendon wearing down over time, which is known as a degenerative tear.

Why is the shoulder most susceptible to join dislocation?

The shoulder joint is the most mobile joint in the body and allows the arm to move in many directions. This ability to move makes the joint inherently unstable and also makes the shoulder the most often dislocated joint in the body.

What is the most vulnerable joint in the body?

The knee is a complex structure and one of the most stressed joints in the body. It is the largest joint, vital for movement, and vulnerable to injury. The knee is the most commonly injured joint by adolescent athletes with an estimated 2.5 million sports-related injuries annually.

Why is the shoulder joint more prone to injury than the hip?

The muscles and ligaments around the shoulder tend to be stretchy and relatively vulnerable (compared to those around the hip). Thus the shoulder is relatively easy to dislocate. The hip is much harder to dislocate even though it is also a ball and socket joint.

What's the most common shoulder injury?

Rotator cuff tears are among the most common types of shoulder injuries. Rotator cuff tears are most common in people who repeatedly perform overhead motions.

Which of the following is an action of the supraspinatus?

Function. The supraspinatus muscle performs abduction of the arm, and pulls the head of the humerus medially towards the glenoid cavity. ... The supraspinatus works in cooperation with the deltoid muscle to perform abduction, including when the arm is in adducted position.

What are three major shoulder injuries?

• Dislocation. If your shoulder is pulled back too hard or rotated too far, the top of your arm might pop out of its socket. ...
• Separation. ...
• Fracture. ...
• Cartilage tear. ...
• Rotator cuff tear. ...
• Frozen shoulder. ...
• Impingement. ...
• Bursitis.

What movement does the supraspinatus muscle perform?

The supraspinatus muscle assists abduction of the arm and stabilization of the humerus head during arm movements.

What is supraspinatus tear?

A supraspinatus tear is a tear or rupture of the tendon of the supraspinatus muscle. The supraspinatus is part of the rotator cuff of the shoulder. Most of the time it is accompanied with another rotator cuff muscle tear.

What does supraspinatus tendinopathy mean?

Supraspinatus tendinopathy is a common source of shoulder pain in athletes that participate in overhead sports (handball, volleyball, tennis, baseball). This tendinopathy is in most cases caused by an impingement of the supraspinatus tendon on the acromion as it passes between the acromion and the humeral head.

Why is knee joint vulnerable to injury?

The knee is the largest joint in the body and joins the two largest bones in the body, the femur and tibia. It is also the most commonly injured joint. The reason for this is that the articulating bony surfaces (ends of the femur and tibia) don't form a very deep bony socket.

What is the most vulnerable joint in your body and why?

And while a network of strong ligaments works to keep your knees stable, they are still the most vulnerable joints in your body.

Which joints are especially vulnerable to injury?

Typical joint injuries occur in the knees, ankles, wrists, shoulders and elbows. These joints can swell and suffer from inflammation and redness, making them immobile and limiting their range of motion. Joint injuries often occur as a result of bicycle wrecks, falling in contact sports, and car accidents.

Why is the shoulder joint easily dislocated?

The shoulder is one of the easiest joints to dislocate because the ball joint of your upper arm sits in a very shallow socket. This makes the arm extremely mobile and able to move in many directions, but also means it is not very stable.

Why is posterior shoulder dislocation rare?

Posterior dislocation of the shoulder is a rare and commonly missed injury. Unilateral dislocations occur mostly due to trauma. Bilateral posterior shoulder dislocations are even more rare and result mainly from epileptic seizures. Electrical injury is a rare cause of posterior shoulder dislocation.

Which of the following is the reason that impingement injuries occur?

Shoulder impingement occurs when the tendon rubs against the acromion. The causes of this impingement include: Your tendon is torn or swollen. This can be due to overuse from repetitive activity of the shoulder, injury or from age-related wear and tear.

Will a supraspinatus tear heal itself?

In this study, 24 patients who had full thickness supraspinatus tears and who opted to forego surgery were tracked over time. In 2 of the 24 patients, the rotator cuff tear completely healed on its own. In 9 of the 24 the tear was smaller.

Where is supraspinatus pain felt?

Supraspinatus pain is felt at the side of the shoulder in the middle section of the deltoid. In some cases, it can be felt further round the front of the shoulder.

Where does the supraspinatus attach?

Insertion. The supraspinatus tendon is inserted into the superior facet of the greater tubercle of the humerus.
