Why is the equatorial line?
Rachel Hickman The Equator represents the great invisible circle around the Earth that is everywhere equidistant from the Geographical pole - Wikipedia
Why is the line called the equator?
The name "equator" is Latin for "even-maker"; at equator the day and night are exactly the same length around the year. ... The equator divides the surface into the northern hemisphere and the southern hemisphere.
Why is the equator and imaginary line?
These lines are important, because they help people navigate and measure time. The equator is an imaginary line drawn right around Earth's middle, like a belt. It divides Earth into the Northern Hemisphere and the Southern Hemisphere.
What happens at the equator line?
It is halfway between the North Pole and the South Pole, at 0 degrees latitude. An equator divides the planet into a Northern Hemisphere and a Southern Hemisphere. The Earth is widest at its Equator. ... The Earth's diameter is also wider at the Equator, creating a phenomenon called an equatorial bulge.
Why is equator the longest line?
The equator is centred at a latitude of 0 degrees, meaning it is centred at the earth's circumference. As u know the sphere is the shape of the earth, that's why the equator is the longest latitude line.

Since the Earth is flattened at the poles and bulges at the Equator, geodesy represents the figure of the Earth as an oblate spheroid. The oblate spheroid, or oblate ellipsoid, is an ellipsoid of revolution obtained by rotating an ellipse about its shorter axis.
What is 0 latitude called?
The Equator is the line of 0 degrees latitude.
What is an interesting fact about the equator?
The equator is just under 25,000 miles long. Because the Earth bulges at the centre the equator is the longest of our planet's five main circles of latitude, each one based on the relationship between the Earth's axis of rotation and the Earth's orbit around the sun.
What is cool about the equator?
The Equator is the most famous imaginary thing on the planet! The equator is nothing but an imaginary line that divides the Earth into the northern and southern hemisphere. ... The study states that people living near the equator have a high risk of ultraviolet –B exposure from sun rays .
Who created the equator?
The equator also runs through the Pacific Ocean, the Atlantic Ocean and the Indian Ocean. The exact location on a map is called latitude 0º 0′ 0″. WHO INVENTED THE EQUATOR? No one discovered the equator because it is just a line on a map, but a team of French explorers mapped it in 1736.
How do you explain the equator to a child?
An equator is an imaginary line around the middle of a planet or other celestial body. It is halfway between the North Pole and the South Pole, at 0 degrees latitude. An equator divides the planet into a Northern Hemisphere and a Southern Hemisphere.
Why is the equator the most important of all the latitudes Why is it also called the Great Circle?
A great circle has the same boundary and same centre point as its sphere. Great circles are seen on all meridians on Earth. All the lines of longitude meet at the poles, intersecting the Earth in half. Thus a great circle always splits the Earth into two halves, so that the Equator is a great circle.
Is the equator the hottest place on earth?
So the concept that the hottest place on earth is around the equator and the coolest is on the poles is wrong. It is hotter in the desert than around the equator because the weather in the desert is very dry so when the temperature rises and it doesn't rain the temperature will rise even higher ....
Why do lines of latitude never intersect?
Circles of latitude are often called parallels because they are parallel to each other; that is, planes that contain any of these circles never intersect each other. A location's position along a circle of latitude is given by its longitude. ... A circle of latitude is perpendicular to all meridians.
Why is the equator hot?
Why is it hot at the Equator and cold at the poles? Due to the tilt of the Earth, the Equator is closer to the sun so receives more of its energy. The Equator has a smaller surface area so heats up quickly compared to the poles. ... This means more heat from the sun makes it to the surface of the Earth.
Is the equator hot or cold?
Ultimately, the temperature in an area depends on the amount of the Sun's energy reaching the surface in that area. The amount of solar energy in a given area is greater at the equator than in an equal area at the poles, which is why the equator temperature is warmer than the polar temperatures.
Why can you balance an egg on a nail at the equator?
Balancing the egg
The theory goes that you can balance an egg on a nail on the equator, but not anywhere else. ... There's no reason why balancing an egg at the equator should be any easier or harder than anywhere else.
Is the equator closer to the sun?
Because the equator is closer to the sun. ... Because the sun's rays hit the earth's surface at a higher angle at the equator.
Does the equator move?
Equatorial Shift
These occur due to the spinning of the Earth, which creates winds that push ocean waters to the north in the Northern Hemisphere, and to the south in the Southern hemisphere. ... The only way for the equator to move is for the spin axis of the Earth — the poles — to move.

How does the equator affect climate?
Latitude or distance from the equator - Temperatures drop the further an area is from the equator due to the curvature of the earth. ... This means that coastal locations tend to be cooler in summer and warmer in winter than places inland at the same latitude and altitude.
IS NULL Island real?
Null Island doesn't exist. In the world of geographic information systems, the island is an apparition that serves a practical purpose. It lies at “zero-zero,” a mapper's shorthand for zero degrees latitude and zero degrees longitude.
