Function. Pyramidalis muscle tenses the linea alba. The muscle usually contracts together with the other abdominal muscles, contributing to contracting the abdominal wall and increasing the positive abdominal pressure. These actions play a dual role.

What is the function of Pyramidalis?

The paired pyramidalis muscles are small triangular-shaped muscles that lie between the anterior surface of the rectus abdominus and the posterior surface of the rectus sheath. The precise function of pyramidalis muscles is unclear, but together the muscles are thought to tense the linea alba.

What are Pyramidalis muscles?

Pyramidalis is a small triangular muscle located anterior to the lower part of rectus abdominis muscle within the rectus sheath. It is attached by tendinous fibres to anterosuperior margin of pubis and by the ligamentous fibres in front of the pubic symphysis.

What is the significance of arcuate line?

It is roughly positioned half way between the umbilicus and the pubic crest. Clinically, the arcuate line is important as the: site of entry of the inferior epigastric artery into the rectus sheath. site of weakness: site of Spigelian hernia.

Why is the arcuate line important in surgery?

Clinical significance

The arcuate line must be incised at its lateral-most point in order to enter the space of Retzius and space of Bogros from within the rectus sheath during surgery during retrorectus repair and transversus abdominis release.

What is the purpose of the rectus sheath?

The function of the rectus sheath is to protect the muscles and vessels which it encloses. In addition, keeping the rectus abdominis and pyramidalis muscle together helps in providing maximal compression of and support to abdominal viscera.

What vertebral level is the arcuate line?

The arcuate line was found to lie at 74.6% of the distance from the pubic symphysis to the umbilicus, and 32.7% of the distance from the pubic symphysis to the xiphoid. This location was 1.8 +/- 1.7 cm superior to the level of the anterior superior iliac spines (ASIS).

Why is it necessary to have 3 layers of abdominal wall muscles?

This arrangement of three bands of muscles in different orientations allows various movements and rotations of the trunk. The three layers of muscle also help to protect the internal abdominal organs in an area where there is no bone.

What makes up the anterior rectus sheath?

The rectus sheath is composed of the aponeuroses of transversus abdominis, external oblique and internal oblique muscles, which form anterior and posterior layers of the sheath that fuse laterally at the linea semilunaris and in the midline at the linea alba.

What is the linea alba?

The linea alba (Latin for white line) is a single midline fibrous line in the anterior abdominal wall formed by the median fusion of the layers of the rectus sheath medial to the bilateral rectus abdominis muscles. It attaches to the xiphoid process of the sternum and the pubic symphysis.

What is the origin of Pyramidalis muscle?

Gross anatomy

The pyramidalis muscle has its origin from the bony pelvis, where it is attached to the pubic symphysis and pubic crest. The fibers run superiorly and medially to insert into the linea alba at a point midway between umbilicus and pubis.

How do you stretch Pyramidalis?

Piriformis stretches

Lie on the back with both feet flat on the floor and both knees bent. Pull the right knee up to the chest, grasp the knee with the left hand and pull it towards the left shoulder and hold the stretch. Repeat for each side. Lie on the back with both feet flat on the floor and both knees bent.

What is the transversus abdominis?

The transversus abdominus is the "cumberbun" muscle of the abdomen. It is the deepest of all the abdominal muscles and is oriented from side to side instead of the abdominal muscles we usually see that go from up to down. This muscle is considered one of the most important abdominal muscles to prevent back pain.

Which are actions of the external oblique?

Function. The external oblique functions to pull the chest downwards and compress the abdominal cavity, which increases the intra-abdominal pressure as in a valsalva maneuver. It also performs ipsilateral (same side) side-bending and contralateral (opposite side) rotation.

What does superior epigastric artery supply?

Function. Where it anastomoses, the superior epigastric artery supplies the anterior part of the abdominal wall, upper rectus abdominis muscle, and some of the diaphragm.

Which abdominal muscle is the most superficial?

External Oblique - the most superficial and also the largest flat muscle of the abdominal wall. It runs in an inferior-medial direction and at the midline, its fibers form an aponeurosis and in the midline merge with the linea alba.

What is sheath muscle?

Anatomical terminology. The rectus sheath, also called the rectus fascia, is formed by the aponeuroses of the transverse abdominal and the internal and external oblique muscles. It contains the rectus abdominis and pyramidalis muscles.

Which muscles contribute to the rectus sheath?

The fascial coverings of the external oblique, internal oblique, and transversus abdominis muscles comprise the rectus sheath.

What helps abdominal separation?

Surgery often involves using stitches to repair the abdominal wall and reduce the gap between the muscles. This can improve quality of life and muscle strength, especially when separation is wider than 3cm.

Why are abdominal muscles important?

The abdominal muscles support the trunk, allow movement and hold organs in place by regulating internal abdominal pressure. The deep abdominal muscles, together with muscles in the back, make up your 'core' muscles and help keep your body stable and balanced, and protects your spine.

What are the main benefits of working out the external and internal obliques?

Helping to support the abdominal viscera against gravity's pull. Providing stability and mobility when bending and rotating, whether standing, walking or running.

What are the functions of the muscles of the abdominal wall?

The muscles of the abdominal walls perform a variety of functions: (1) They provide a tonic, elastic muscular support for the viscera and, by their recoil, pull down the rib cage in expiration. (2) They contract against blows to form a rigid protective wall for the viscera.

What is above and below arcuate line?

Above the arcuate line. Anterior layer: composed of the external oblique aponeurosis and the anterior lamina of the internal oblique aponeurosis. Posterior layer: composed of the transversus abdominis aponeurosis and the posterior lamina of the internal oblique aponeurosis.

What is the arcuate line of the ilium?

The arcuate line of the ilium is a smooth rounded border on the internal surface of the ilium. It is immediately inferior to the iliac fossa and Iliacus muscle. It forms part of the border of the pelvic inlet. In combination with the pectineal line, it comprises the iliopectineal line.

What are the borders of Hesselbach's triangle?

The Hesselbach triangle is located in the anterior abdominal wall bilaterally (on both the right and left sides) and has three major boundaries: the medial boundary consisting of the rectus abdominis muscle; the lateral boundary consisting of the inferior epigastric vessels, which supply the anterior abdominal wall ...
