When efflorescence happens, it can indicate a moisture issue that could potentially damage the structure. When water reaches a building material's surface, evaporation will occur. After the water evaporates, salt is left behind, but water absorption and wicking continue.

What effect does efflorescence have?

Effects of Efflorescence:

Effects of efflorescence is damp wall leading to various damages like unhygienic conditions, decay, dry rot of woodwork, disintegration of masonry, damage to furniture and internal decorations, crumbling of plaster, etc.

What is efflorescence in concrete and why does it occur?

Efflorescence is a chalky white salt residue that can occur with any product containing cement. As moisture migrates up to the surface of the concrete, it carries along with it calcium salts from within the concrete. When the salts reach the surface, they react with CO2 in the air and form insoluble calcium carbonate.

What is the main cause of efflorescence?

Efflorescence is caused when soluble salts and other water dispersible materials come to the surface of concrete and mortars. It's induced by low temperatures, moist conditions, condensation, rain, dew, and water added to the surface of fresh concrete to assist troweling.

What are the properties of efflorescence?

Efflorescence is the loss of water from the chemical structure of a mineral. A small number of hydrous minerals may partially lose the water in their structure if kept in dry or hot areas. This causes the mineral to form a white powder on its surface, and decreases its transparency.

All about efflorescence and how to avoid

Why is efflorescence a problem?

Efflorescence alone does not pose a major problem, but it can be an indication of moisture intrusion, which may compromise the structural material. Building materials, such as concrete, wood, brick and stone, are porous materials. ... As water moves through the porous material, salts can be drawn with it.

What is the pH of efflorescence?

When this author tested the pH of masonry construction, areas without efflorescence had a pH ranging from 8 to 12; areas exhibiting efflorescence were above 12. Most paint manufacturers recommend cementitious materials have a pH of less than 12 before painting.

Should I worry about efflorescence?

Ultimately, efflorescence itself isn't dangerous. However, it can lead to potential moisture problems that can cause structural damage to building materials. That means if you find efflorescence in the basement or on concrete and other structures, it's important to take action.

Is efflorescence harmful to breathe?

Unlike mold, efflorescence isn't normally harmful to human health, but it can cause mild irritation if inhaled or if it comes in contact with the eyes. Even so, efflorescence doesn't usually float freely in the air as dust. Pressurized water can dissolve efflorescence and clean away the mineral deposits.

Why do bricks go white?

Efflorescence is a crystaline, salty deposit that occurs on the surfaces of bricks, concrete and other masonry products. It is white, sometimes a brilliant white or an off white colour. ... When salt loaded water reaches the surface of the brick, air evaporates the water, leaving the salt behind.

Does efflorescence mean the basement leaks?

Efflorescence requires the appearance of water from somewhere in the basement. Most commonly, this water does come from a leak, typically through cracks in the walls or floor. ... If you're seeing efflorescence in your basement, foundation or crawl space, that means there are other problems hiding right under the surface.

What is the white stuff sprayed on new concrete?

The 1600-WHITE series of water-based, white-pigmented concrete curing compounds are wax-based dispersions with selected white pigments. When properly applied, 1600-WHITE forms a premium-grade membrane, which optimizes water retention.

Does white vinegar remove efflorescence?

Both efflorescence and calcium deposits can be cleaned using one of two methods. First, for very mild cases of efflorescence, try a 50/50 mix of white vinegar and water. ... The acidity in the vinegar helps remove the efflorescence and calcium deposits by breaking down mineral crystals.

Is efflorescence harmful to humans?

Is Efflorescence Harmful? It is common for people to confuse mold with efflorescence. Efflorescence itself isn't dangerous or harmful. It can lead to potential moisture problems that can cause structural damage to building materials.

What's the meaning of efflorescence?

1a : the action or process of developing and unfolding as if coming into flower : blossoming periods of … intellectual and artistic efflorescence— Julian Huxley. b : an instance of such development. c : fullness of manifestation : culmination. 2 : the period or state of flowering.

How do you treat efflorescence?

In general, an ideal way to treat efflorescence is to scrape the area thoroughly or scrub it with a brush. Once clean, an epoxy based coating such as Dr. Fixit Dampguard will ensure that the inside of the wall, as well as the outside, is protected from dampness, and a repeat occurrence of efflorescence is kept at bay.

What is the difference between efflorescence and white mold?

Differences Between Efflorescence & Mold

Mold is a fungus, efflorescence is moisture that evaporates into salt deposits. Efflorescence will turn into a powder when touched, while mold will not. Efflorescence is white, yellow or brown, while mold can be any color.

Can efflorescence turn into mold?

Therefore, if efflorescence is present, there is a significant chance of mold growth or other moisture issues may be present. For example, while efflorescence on a garage floor will not cause a problem, the accompanying moisture can cause mold growth on items stored on the floor.

Can efflorescence grow on dirt?

Efflorescence develops on inorganic building materials, like concrete and brick. ... Sometimes you will see mold on things like concrete or brick because it can grow and feed on dirt or other organic substances on those surfaces. You won't find efflorescence on organic materials like wood, however.

What is the white stuff growing on my basement walls?

Efflorescence is actually a harmless crystallized mineral salt that has formed on your basement walls over time. It will generally look like a white, powdery substance. Efflorescence forms as moisture passes through the porous concrete of your basement walls. ...

What is the white powder on bricks?

Efflorescence or salt petering is a crystalline, salty deposit with a white or off-white colour that can form on the surfaces of bricks, masonry or concrete.

Does efflorescence go away?

The good news is that efflorescence is completely harmless, not detrimental to the blocks, can be removed and will gradually disappear over time. ... Efflorescence can come and go over a period of a few weeks but can take many months in some cases.

Can efflorescence come through paint?

Remove and Paint Efflorescence Surfaces

You could remove the efflorescence and all other loose material (dirt, unbound sand, and deteriorated paint) with a wire brush or pressure washer. We recommend to use the following solution: One part phosphoric acid to seven parts water.

What happens if you paint over efflorescence?

Since the mineral salt crystals are not fluid, the pressure is therefore not uniform hence the coating does not form smooth rounded blisters. The paint film may stretch to form the outline of the growing crystals or the paint film may just rupture, crack, flake or peel instead.

How do you prevent efflorescence?

Simply sealing concrete from water penetration (using a penetrating sealer) will help prevent efflorescence. V-SEAL creates an incredible water barrier for brick, mortar, and all forms of concrete. To help prevent efflorescence, V-SEAL should be sprayed anywhere brick, mortar or cement will be exposed to water.
