What medications are given for premature rupture of membranes?
Standard treatment for pPROM includes antenatal corticosteroid medicines, which are used to speed up fetal lung maturity at or before 34 weeks of pregnancy. Why is erythromycin used in PPROM?
Preterm Premature Rupture of Membranes (PPROM) is treated with an antibiotic, erythromycin or azithromycin, to prolong pregnancy. Erythromycin is taken for several days and can result in stomach upset in some patients, causing them to stop taking the medication. Therefore, azithromycin is often prescribed instead.
What is the difference between Tocolytics and Uterotonics?
Uterotonics and tocolytics – O&G Magazine. Medications that relax the muscle in the pregnant uterus – tocolytics – or increase uterine contraction – uterotonics – play a vital role in modern obstetric care.
What drugs are Tocolytics?
The most common tocolytic agents used for the treatment of preterm labor are magnesium sulfate (MgSO4), indomethacin, and nifedipine.
Why is hydralazine given during pregnancy?
For many years, hydralazine has been the recommended antihypertensive of first choice for severe hypertension in pregnancy. Its side effects (such as headache, nausea, and vomiting) are common and mimic symptoms of deteriorating pre-eclampsia.
Which conditions and factors are contraindications to the use of tocolytic therapies?
Contraindications to tocolytics
Pregnant person has severe pregnancy-induced hypertension, severe eclampsia/preeclampsia, active vaginal bleeding, placental abruption, a cardiac disease, or another condition which indicates that the pregnancy should not continue.
What tocolytic is contraindicated in asthma?
Specific tocolytic agents should not be used whenever known allergies exist. Indomethacin is contraindicated in the presence of aspirin-induced asthma, coagulopathy, or significant liver disease.
Is salbutamol a tocolytic?
Our findings are consistent with previous studies that have shown that terbutaline10–12 and salbutamol13–15 are effective tocolytic agents accompanied by side effects.
Is terbutaline a tocolytic?
Terbutaline and ritodrine are also tocolytic drugs used to manage premature labor contractions through relaxation of the myometrium via their β2 effect. Ritodrine is usually started intravenously and is continued orally if tocolysis is achieved.
What is prom in pregnancy?
Premature rupture of membranes (PROM) is the rupture of the fetal membranes before the onset of labor. In most cases, this occurs near term, but when membrane rupture occurs before 37 weeks' gestation, it is known as preterm PROM.
What can cause early labor?
Known causes of preterm labor are:- Infections.
- Vaginal bleeding.
- Hormone changes.
- Stretching of the uterus. This might be from being pregnant with more than 1 baby, a large baby, or too much amniotic fluid.
What are tocolytics used for?
Tocolysis is an obstetrical procedure carried out with the use of medications with the purpose of delaying the delivery of a fetus in women presenting preterm contractions. These medications are administered with the hope of decreasing fetal morbidity and mortality.
Is nifedipine a tocolytic?
Nifedipine appears to be superior to β2-adrenergic-receptor agonists and magnesium sulfate and should be considered as the first-line tocolytic agent for the management of preterm labor.
How do Nsaids work as tocolytics?
Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) are potent vasoactive drugs that inhibit the secretion of inflammatory prostaglandins and cytokines. These anti-inflammatory properties are thought to be the mechanism by which they diminish uterine contractions.
