Through a series of steps, the neurosurgeon carefully cuts the band of tissue that has attached to the spinal cord to release it. Your child will probably spend two to three days in the hospital, and after about a week of being at home, he or she should be back to normal.

Who does a tethered cord surgery?

There are two types of tethered spinal cord release surgery. In the simplest and most common form, a neurosurgeon makes a small opening in the back of the spine, below the end of the spinal cord, to cut the filum terminale, which is a band of tissue at the end of the spinal cord.

Who diagnoses tethered spinal?

To diagnose tethered spinal cord, the doctor examines your child, looking for signs and symptoms. Your child most likely will have an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging). This test will help the doctor see inside your child's body and assess their condition.

When should you suspect a tethered cord?

Red flags that might lead a doctor to suspect tethered cord include any of its symptoms (although the same symptoms can be caused by a number of other spinal cord conditions); a previous diagnosis of a congenital spinal malformation; a history of cancer, infection, spine surgery; or spinal cord injury.

Will an MRI show tethered cord?

Vertebral anomalies could be detected both with plain films and MRI scans. Conclusion: MRI is an excellent diagnostic tool in the diagnosis of tethered cord syndrome. Patients with persistent leg and back pain associated with sphincter problems should be evaluated with MRI for a possible tethered cord syndrome.

Can tethered cord be detected in utero?

Tethered spinal cord is associated with closed and open neural tube defects. With prenatal screening, spinal defects are consistently diagnosed during fetal life. We show that the conus medullaris can be seen well with prenatal ultrasound, and the diagnosis of tethered spinal cord can be made during fetal life.

What causes tethered cord in babies?

In many cases, children are born with a tethered cord because of a problem during the development of the spine. Tethered spinal cord can also occur after birth due to damage to the spine or from scar tissue after surgery.
