Radia Perlman - Wikipedia

was one of very few women involved in process at that time. Her invention of the algorithm behind the Spanning Tree Protocol solved a challenging information routing problem and earned her the moniker “Mother of the Internet.”

When was Spanning Tree Protocol invented?

The original spanning tree protocol and algorithm were invented in 1985 by Radia Perlman when she was working at Digital Equipment Corporation. Spanning tree protocols were later standardized by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).

Why is Radia Perlman important?

She is most famous for her invention of the Spanning Tree Protocol (STP), which is fundamental to the operation of network bridges, while working for Digital Equipment Corporation. Perlman is the author of a textbook on networking and coauthor of another on network security. She holds more than 100 issued patents.

Who invented the algorithm for the Internet?

The woman who developed the algorithm behind the Spanning Tree Protocol reflects on her illustrious career in math, computer science, and networking. When Radia Perlman attended MIT in the late '60s and '70s, she was one of just a few dozen women (about 50) out of a class of 1,000.

Who funded the creation of the forerunner to the Internet?

ARPANET, in full Advanced Research Projects Agency Network, experimental computer network that was the forerunner of the Internet. The Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA), an arm of the U.S. Defense Department, funded the development of the Advanced Research Projects Agency Network (ARPANET) in the late 1960s.

Who is the mother of all networks?

The Internet has been called the "information superhighway," the "national information infrastructure" and the "mother of all networks." To some it is part of their daily work, learning and social life.

Who is the fore father of Internet?

Vint Cerf. Widely known as a “Father of the Internet,” Cerf is the co-designer of the TCP/IP protocols and the architecture of the Internet. In December 1997, President Bill Clinton presented the U.S. National Medal of Technology to Cerf and his colleague, Robert E. Kahn, for founding and developing the Internet.

How many patents does Radia Perlman have?

Perlman holds over 100 issued patents and is the recipient of awards such as Lifetime Achievement awards from Usenix and the Association for Computing Machinery's Special Interest Group on Data Communication (SIGCOMM). Her B.S and M.S.

What is Spanning Tree Protocol for dummies?

STP is a Layer 2 protocol that passes data back and forth to find out how the switches are organized on the network and then takes all the information it gathers and uses it to create a logical tree. Part of the information STP receives defines exactly how all the network switches are interconnected.

What is STP protocol in networking?

The Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) is a network protocol that builds a loop-free logical topology for Ethernet networks. The basic function of STP is to prevent bridge loops and the broadcast radiation that results from them. ... RSTP was designed to be backwards-compatible with standard STP.

What is OSPF protocol?

The OSPF stands for Open Shortest Path First. It is a widely used and supported routing protocol. It is an intradomain protocol, which means that it is used within an area or a network. It is an interior gateway protocol that has been designed within a single autonomous system.

Why is Rstp faster than STP?

The STP process to determine network state transitions is slower than the RSTP process because it is timer-based. A device must reinitialize every time a topology change occurs. ... RSTP converges faster because it uses a handshake mechanism based on point-to-point links instead of the timer-based process used by STP.

What is difference between STP and RSTP?

The main difference between Rapid Spanning Tree Protocol (RSTP IEEE 802.1W) and Spanning Tree Protocol (STP IEEE 802.1D) is that Rapid Spanning Tree Protocol (RSTP IEEE 802.1W) assumes the three Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) ports states Listening, Blocking, and Disabled are same (these states do not forward Ethernet ...

Who invented the computer?

English mathematician and inventor Charles Babbage is credited with having conceived the first automatic digital computer. During the mid-1830s Babbage developed plans for the Analytical Engine.

What does WiFi mean?

Wi-Fi, often referred to as WiFi, wifi, wi-fi or wi fi, is often thought to be short for Wireless Fidelity but there is no such thing. The term was created by a marketing firm because the wireless industry was looking for a user-friendly name to refer to some not so user-friendly technology known as IEEE 802.11.

Who created the internet CERN or Darpa?

Tim Berners-Lee, a British scientist, invented the World Wide Web (WWW) in 1989, while working at CERN. The web was originally conceived and developed to meet the demand for automated information-sharing between scientists in universities and institutes around the world.

Does someone own the Internet?

The Internet is like the telephone system -- no one owns the whole thing. ... These companies are upstream Internet Service Providers (ISPs). That means that anyone who wants to access the Internet must ultimately work with these companies, which include: UUNET.

Why computer is called as a system?

Computer is referred to as a system because it is made up of integrated components (input, output, storage and CPU) which work together to perform steps called for in the program being executed.

What did Radia Perlman invent?

Engineer and mathematician Radia Perlman was one of very few women involved in process at that time. Her invention of the algorithm behind the Spanning Tree Protocol solved a challenging information routing problem and earned her the moniker “Mother of the Internet.”

How did networking start?

The first workable prototype of the Internet came in the late 1960s with the creation of ARPANET, or the Advanced Research Projects Agency Network. Originally funded by the U.S. Department of Defense, ARPANET used packet switching to allow multiple computers to communicate on a single network.

How did Internet start history?

The Internet started in the 1960s as a way for government researchers to share information. ... This eventually led to the formation of the ARPANET (Advanced Research Projects Agency Network), the network that ultimately evolved into what we now know as the Internet.
