History. A finery forge was used to refine wrought iron at least by the 3rd century BC in ancient China, based on the earliest archaeological specimens of cast and pig iron fined into wrought iron and steel found at the early Han Dynasty (202 BC – 220 AD) site at Tieshengguo.

When was the finery forge invented?

Finery forges were used as early as the 3rd century BC in China. The finery forge process was replaced by the puddling process and the roller mill, both developed by Henry Cort in 1783–4, but not becoming widespread until after 1800.

How does a finery forge work?

To remove carbon from the pig iron, the bars are heated in a finery hearth until they melt and drip onto cast iron plates at the bottom of the hearth. Here the iron cools a little and is stirred into a soft blob. This process is repeated three times, with the final blob worked into a ball called a loop.

What is the finery process?

Finery process, Early method of converting cast iron to wrought iron, superseding the bloomery process after blast furnaces became widespread. ... From the 15th century on, this two-stage process gradually replaced direct making of malleable iron. It was in turn replaced by the puddling process.

What is a bloomery forge Mill?

A bloomery is a type of metallurgical furnace once used widely for smelting iron from its oxides. The bloomery was the earliest form of smelter capable of smelting iron. Bloomeries produce a porous mass of iron and slag called a bloom.

What Actually Defines an Assault Rifle, and Who Invented Them?

What is pig iron?

Pig iron is the product of smelting iron ore (also ilmenite) with a high-carbon fuel and reductant such as coke, usually with limestone as a flux. Charcoal and anthracite are also used as fuel and reductant. Pig iron is produced by smelting or iron ore in blast furnaces or by smelting ilmenite in electric furnaces.

How is crucible steel made?

Crucible steel is steel made by melting pig iron (cast iron), iron, and sometimes steel, often along with sand, glass, ashes, and other fluxes, in a crucible. ... Huntsman used coke rather than coal or charcoal, achieving temperatures high enough to melt steel and dissolve iron.

Why is wrought iron called?

Wrought iron is tough, malleable, ductile, corrosion resistant, and easily welded. ... It was given the name wrought because it was hammered, rolled or otherwise worked while hot enough to expel molten slag. The modern functional equivalent of wrought iron is mild steel, also called low-carbon steel.

How does the puddling process work?

puddling process, Method of converting pig iron into wrought iron by subjecting it to heat and frequent stirring in a furnace in the presence of oxidizing substances (see oxidation-reduction).

Where was the puddling process invented?

Puddling is a step in the manufacture of high-grade iron in a crucible or furnace. It was invented in Great Britain during the Industrial Revolution. The molten pig iron was stirred in a reverberatory furnace, in an oxidizing environment, resulting in wrought iron.

What did Henry Cort invent?

Henry Cort, (born 1740, Lancaster, Lancashire, Eng. —died 1800, London), British discoverer of the puddling process for converting pig iron into wrought iron. Having accumulated capital by serving 10 years as a civilian official of the Royal Navy, Cort bought an ironworks near Portsmouth in 1775.

Who invented iron and steel smelting?

The development of iron smelting was traditionally attributed to the Hittites of Anatolia of the Late Bronze Age. It was believed that they maintained a monopoly on iron working, and that their empire had been based on that advantage.

What is difference between wrought and forged?

The main difference between wrought and forged steel is strength. Forged steels are tougher than wrought steels as they begin as a casting which is then forged which adds to its durability. Wrought steel is less likely to be used in high-tension applications and it may be harder and more brittle than forged steel.

Who discovered Crucible Steel?

Benjamin Huntsman, (born June 4, 1704, Lincolnshire, Eng. —died June 20, 1776, Attercliffe, Yorkshire), Englishman who invented crucible, or cast, steel, which was more uniform in composition and freer from impurities than any steel previously produced.

Who discovered steel?

India would produce the first true steel. Around 400 BC, Indian metalworkers invented a smelting method that happened to bond the perfect amount of carbon to iron. The key was a clay receptacle for the molten metal: a crucible.

Is wootz a Damascus?

Original Damascus steel blades were produced in Syria from around 500-900 AD until about 1750 AD using wootz steel. Wootz steel came from southern India, Khorasan, and Sri Lanka. ... For this reason, true Damascus steel is called “wootz Damascus steel” to distinguish it from imitations.

Which metal Cannot be forged?

If the carbon content is over 2%, the metal is called cast iron, because it has a relatively low melting point and is easily cast. It is quite brittle, however, and cannot be forged so therefore not used for blacksmithing.

What did Abraham Darby develop 1709?

One such development took place in 1709, in the Shropshire village of Coalbrookdale. Abraham Darby (1678–1717) – the first in what would become a distinguished dynasty of iron masters – had pioneered an innovative method of iron smelting.

Which cast iron Cannot be Weld?

White cast iron which is very hard and contains iron carbides, is normally considered to be unweldable.

Who invented stainless steel?

In 1913, Harry Brearley of Sheffield, UK discovered 'rustless' steel. Although there had been many prior attempts, Brearley has been credited with inventing the first true stainless steel, which had a 12.8% chromium content. He had added chromium to molten iron to produce a metal that did not rust.

Who invented iron smelting in ancient China?

The first famous metallurgist in ancient China is Qiwu Huaiwen of the Northern Wei Dynasty (386－557 AD), who invented the process of using wrought iron and cast iron to make steel.

Did the Chinese invent steel?

"Iron was smelted in China by the 4th century BC, and steel was perfected by the 400's AD using coal as a high temperature fuel. ... "The Chinese probably discovered copper-smelting and bronze-making independently of the West, because their pottery kilns were much superior."
