The theory was first proposed by William Lowthian Green in 1875.

What is Alfred Wegener theory?

In the early 20th century, Wegener published a paper explaining his theory that the continental landmasses were “drifting” across the Earth, sometimes plowing through oceans and into each other. He called this movement continental drift.

What is the theory about Earth's land?

Plate tectonics is the theory that Earth's land masses are in constant motion. The realization that Earth's land masses move was first proposed by Alfred Wegener, which he called continental drift.

Which theory tries to explain the distribution of ocean and continents?

Continental drift theory deals with the distribution of the oceans and the continents. It was first suggested by a German meteorologist, Alfred Wegener in 1912.

What supports the idea of continental drift?

The evidence for continental drift included the fit of the continents; the distribution of ancient fossils, rocks, and mountain ranges; and the locations of ancient climatic zones.

Why did scientists reject Wegener's theory?

The main reason that Wegener's hypothesis was not accepted was because he suggested no mechanism for moving the continents. He thought the force of Earth's spin was sufficient to cause continents to move, but geologists knew that rocks are too strong for this to be true.

Who is the father of continental drift?

Alfred Wegener: The Father of Continental Drift.

Who gave plate tectonic theory?

German meteorologist Alfred Wegener is often credited as the first to develop a theory of plate tectonics, in the form of continental drift.

What is continental drift theory BYJU's?

Alfred Wegener, a German meteorologist put forth a comprehensive argument in the form of “the continental drift theory” in 1912. According to Wegener, all the continents formed a single continental mass and mega ocean surrounded the same. The supercontinent was named PANGAEA, which meant all earth.

Who is the smallest continent in the world?

Australia/Oceania is the smallest continent. It is also the flattest. Australia/Oceania has the second-smallest population of any continent.

Who discovered seafloor spreading?

Harry Hess: One of the Discoverers of Seafloor Spreading.

Is Pangea still a theory?

Modern geology has shown that Pangea did actually exist. ... Within the next 250 million years, Africa and the Americas will merge with Eurasia to form a supercontinent that approaches Pangean proportions.

What if Pangea never broke apart?

Asia would be up north, by Russia, and Antarctica would remain down south. India and Australia would be farther south, connected to Antarctica. These countries that used to have hot climates would now be cold, covered with snow and ice. And those wouldn't be the only environmental changes.

Who were the two scientist who proposed the theory of seafloor?

The idea that the seafloor itself moves and also carries the continents with it as it spreads from a central rift axis was proposed by Harold Hammond Hess from Princeton University and Robert Dietz of the U.S. Naval Electronics Laboratory in San Diego in the 1960s.

Who was Alfred Wegener and what was his theory?

Wegener was a German meteorologist, geophysicist and polar researcher. In 1915 he published 'The Origin of Continents and Oceans', which outlined his theory of Continental Drift. Wegener was a member of four expeditions to Greenland.

What did Alfred Wegener discover?

Lived 1880 – 1930.

Alfred Wegener proposed the theory of continental drift – the idea that Earth's continents move. Despite publishing a large body of compelling fossil and rock evidence for his theory between 1912 and 1929, it was rejected by most other scientists.

What is Pangea and panthalassa?

Pangea, also spelled Pangaea, in early geologic time, a supercontinent that incorporated almost all the landmasses on Earth. Pangea was surrounded by a global ocean called Panthalassa, and it was fully assembled by the Early Permian Epoch (some 299 million to about 273 million years ago).

What was the name of the superocean?

Panthalassa, also known as the Panthalassic Ocean or Panthalassan Ocean (from Greek πᾶν "all" and θάλασσα "sea"), was the superocean that surrounded the supercontinent Pangaea, the latest in a series of supercontinents in the history of Earth.

What is Polar fleeing?

The polar-fleeing force relates to the rotation of the earth. Earth is not a perfect sphere; it has a bulge at the equator. This bulge is due to the rotation of the earth (greater centrifugal force at the equator). ... This increase in centrifugal force has led to pole fleeing, according to Wegener.

Who was the founder of convection current theory?

Arthur Holmes postulated his thermal convection current theory in the year 1928-29 to explain the intricate problems of the origin of major relief features of the earth's surface.

When was seafloor spreading proposed?

The seafloor spreading hypothesis was proposed by the American geophysicist Harry H. Hess in 1960.

How was the plate tectonic theory developed?

Plate tectonic theory had its beginnings in 1915 when Alfred Wegener proposed his theory of "continental drift." Wegener proposed that the continents plowed through crust of ocean basins, which would explain why the outlines of many coastlines (like South America and Africa) look like they fit together like a puzzle.

What did Harry Hammond Hess realize in the 1950s?

Hess discovered that the oceans were shallower in the middle and identified the presence of Mid Ocean Ridges, raised above the surrounding generally flat sea floor (abyssal plain) by as much as 1.5 km.

Who is Harry Hess and what did he do?

Harry Hess was a geologist and Navy submarine commander during World War II. Part of his mission had been to study the deepest parts of the ocean floor. In 1946 he had discovered that hundreds of flat-topped mountains, perhaps sunken islands, shape the Pacific floor.

Where did Alfred Wegener come from?

Alfred Wegener. Alfred Wegener was born in Berlin on November 1, 1880. He studied the natural sciences at the University of Berlin, receiving a doctorate in astronomy in 1904.
