Which mitral disorder results from redundancy?
Gabriel Cooper Mitral valve prolapse (Barlow's disease) is a MASS syndrome - Wikipedia
What is mitral valve redundancy?
In mitral valve prolapse, one or both leaflets of the valve are too large, or the chordae tendinea (the strings attached to the underside of the leaflets, connected to the ventricular wall) are too long (redundant), resulting in uneven closure of the valve during each heartbeat.
What does mitral Regurg cause?
If you have long-term untreated or improperly treated mitral regurgitation, you can develop a type of high blood pressure that affects the vessels in the lungs (pulmonary hypertension). A leaky mitral valve can increase pressure in the left atrium, which can eventually cause pulmonary hypertension.
What causes mitral valve prolapse in Marfan syndrome?
In patients with MVP, myxomatous degeneration of the leaflets and chordae results in leaflet thickening and redundancy, causing the leaflets to prolapse, or flop backwards, into the left atrium (detail). This sometimes allows leakage of blood through the mitral valve (mitral regurgitation).
What causes mitral valve prolapse click?
Mitral Valve Prolapse may be detected by listening with a stethoscope, revealing a "click" (created by the stretched flaps snapping against each other during contraction) and/or a murmur. The murmur is caused by some of the blood leaking back into the left atrium. The click or murmur may be the only clinical sign.

18 related questions foundWhen does S3 occur?
The third heart sound (S3), also known as the “ventricular gallop,” occurs just after S2 when the mitral valve opens, allowing passive filling of the left ventricle. The S3 sound is actually produced by the large amount of blood striking a very compliant left ventricle.
What is Barlow's disease?
Barlow's disease is the most severe form of degenerative mitral valve disease, commonly characterized by bileaflet prolapse. Abnormal mitral annular dynamics is typically present and results in functional prolapse of the mitral leaflets that may be addressed with annular stabilization alone.
What is the most common cardiac defect seen in Marfan's syndrome?
The most common cardiovascular abnormalities are dilatation of the aorta and mitral regurgitation (table 2). Most children with Marfan's syndrome have aortic root dilatation. The reported frequency of other valve abnormalities depends to some extent on the rigour of the method of assessment.
What is Myxomatous?
Myxomatous is a term derived from the word Myxoma. Myxoma is derived from Greek word muxa, meaning mucus. Myxoma is a non-cancerous tumor growth, it contains mucus or gelatin like substance.
What heart condition is Marfan syndrome associated with?
Cardiomyopathy: With Marfan syndrome, the heart muscle may enlarge and weaken over time, causing cardiomyopathy, even if the heart valves are not leaking. The condition may progress to heart failure. Aortic root dilation: The aortic root is the area where the aorta meets the aortic valve.
What is Trileaflet aortic valve?
The trileaflet mitral valve is a very rare congenital malformation with three equal size leaflets and three papillary muscles. In this article, we report the first case of trileaflet mitral valve associated with a bicuspid aortic valve in a patient referred for management of infective endocarditis.
What does pulmonic regurgitation mean?
Pulmonary regurgitation is a condition where the pulmonary valve, which regulates blood flow from the right side of the heart to the lungs, doesn't close properly and a portion of it leaks back to the right side of the heart.
What is the most common cause of mitral regurgitation?
Mitral valve prolapse: Prolapse is the most common cause of mitral regurgitation, and features extra tissue in the valve that keeps it from closing. Certain inherited genes can increase your risk of developing prolapse. It is also called click-murmur syndrome, Barlow's syndrome, and floppy valve syndrome.
What is uncomplicated mitral valve prolapse?
Mitral valve prolapse (MVP) is the most common valvular abnormality, affecting approximately 2-3% of the population in the United States. [1,2] It is generally defined as the systolic displacement of one or more abnormally thickened, redundant mitral leaflet(s) into the left atrium during systole.
What is P2 prolapse?
Enlarge. Mitral valve prolapse is the most common indication for surgical mitral valve repair due to severe mitral valve regurgitation. The most common segment involved in mitral valve prolapse is termed the P2 segment. The mitral valve structure is complex.
What does trivial mitral regurgitation mean?
When the mitral valve does not fully close and leaks (i.e. blood flows backwards) it is called mitral regurgitation. A trivial or mild amount of mitral regurgitation is considered within normal physiological limits. Concern is raised when the mitral regurgitation becomes moderate to severe.
What is Myxomatous degeneration of the mitral valve?
Myxomatous degeneration of the mitral valve is a histopathological diagnosis and characterized by myxomatous altered thickened mitral leaflets and involvement of the chordae tendineae leading to a loss of mechanical leaflet integrity 3. The posterior mitral leaflet is more frequently affected 2.
Are myxomas malignant?
Myxoma is a non-cancerous (benign) tumor of the heart. In fact, it is the most common primary heart tumor.
What is MMVD dog?
Myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD) is the most common congenital heart disease in dogs accounting for more than 70% of all canine heart disease1–3. The disease is chronic and progressive with initial signs, usually a heart murmur, developing after the age of six.
What is the long term outlook for a child with Marfan syndrome?
With monitoring and treatment, the lifespan is normal and the outlook positive for people with Marfan syndrome. Their main challenges are the physical problems described above. Children with Marfan syndrome generally lead full, normal lives, with the adequate monitoring and management of symptoms.
Does everyone with Marfan syndrome have heart problems?
Even though heart and blood vessel problems affect about 9 out of every 10 people diagnosed with Marfan syndrome, there is good news. If you get diagnosed, you have a lot of options, including having surgery, taking medications and changing your physical activities.
Can ECG detect Marfan syndrome?
Tests for Marfan syndrome can include: echocardiogram (cardiac ultrasound) electrocardiogram (EKG or ECG) cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or computed tomography (CT)
What is Fibroelastic deficiency?
Fibroelastic deficiency is a condition characterized by Carpentier and co-workers, who realized that not all degenerative valve disease involved giant excess tissue as originally proposed by Barlow in the 1960's.
How is Barlow syndrome diagnosed?
Through a stethoscope, your doctor may hear a clicking sound as the valve's leaflets billow out, followed by a murmur from blood whooshing back into the atrium. These two sounds can mean you have mitral valve prolapse.
Why is it called Barlow syndrome?
Infantile scurvy (named after Sir Thomas Barlow (1845–1945)), who showed that the infantile scurvy is the same disease as adult scurvy. Mitral valve prolapse (named after Dr. John Brereton Barlow (1924-2008)), who first described it in 1966.
