The middle ear or tympanic cavity is an air-filled space in the temporal bone that is interposed between the tympanic membrane and the inner ear structures (Fig. 21.2A).

Which part of the ear is also called the tympanic cavity?

Also known as the tympanic cavity, the middle ear is an air-filled, membrane-lined space located between the ear canal and the Eustachian tube, cochlea, and auditory nerve. The eardrum separates this space from the ear canal. The area is pressurized.

What are the parts of tympanic cavity?

The tympanic cavity consists of three parts: the epitympanic recess, which is an upper area above the level of the membrane; the mesotympanum, a middle area on a level with the membrane; and the hypotympanic recess, a lower area situated beneath the promontory and the membrane.

Where is tympanic located?

tympanic membrane, also called eardrum, thin layer of tissue in the human ear that receives sound vibrations from the outer air and transmits them to the auditory ossicles, which are tiny bones in the tympanic (middle-ear) cavity.

Is tympanic membrane outer or middle ear?

The tympanic membrane is a very thin structure that separates the outer ear canal from the middle ear space.

Middle ear (tympanic cavity) anatomy

What is the tympanic membrane of the ear?

The tympanic membrane is also called the eardrum. It separates the outer ear from the middle ear. When sound waves reach the tympanic membrane they cause it to vibrate. The vibrations are then transferred to the tiny bones in the middle ear.

What is the inner ear?

Next to the middle ear in the bone of the skull is a small compartment which contains the hearing and balance apparatus known as the inner ear. The inner ear has two main parts. The cochlea , which is the hearing portion, and the semicircular canals is the balance portion.

What is posterior wall of tympanic cavity?

The posterior wall is primarily the mastoid air cells (with mastoid antrum) which communicate with the tympanic cavity via the aditus. The facial canal containing the facial nerve descends in front of them (before emerging from the stylomastoid foramen).

What is cochlea of ear?

The cochlea is a hollow, spiral-shaped bone found in the inner ear that plays a key role in the sense of hearing and participates in the process of auditory transduction. Sound waves are transduced into electrical impulses that the brain can interpret as individual frequencies of sound.

What is tympanic notch?

The tympanic notch (Notch of Rivinus) is a small defect in the posterior edge of the bony annular tympanic ring. ... Just superior to this the Notch of Rivinus can be seen and the neck of the malleus occupies the notch and often is the superior limit of a tympanomeatal flap.

What are the 2 openings of the tympanic cavity?

These two openings in the medial wall both lead to the vestibule of the inner ear. The oval one above, the vestibular window, is occupied by the stapes. This round one below it, the cochlear window, is closed off by an inactive membrane. This bulge, the promontory, is formed by the basal turn of the cochlea.

What is monomeric tympanic membrane?

Information: A monomere is a area of thin, transparent tympanic membrane due to the absence of the dense fibrous layer. It usually occurs after a perforation. A monomere will not usually affect the audiogram. The tympanogram may be normal or show increased mobility with a higher peak at the normal pressure.

What are parts of the ear called?

There are three different parts to the outer ear; the tragus, helix and the lobule. The ear canal starts at the outer ear and ends at the ear drum.

What is the tympanic membrane in frogs?

The tympanic membrane is a thin membrane behind the frog's eyes that separates the outside from the frog's inner ear. It also converts vibrations in the air to vibrations in the fluid.

What is the medial wall of middle ear?

The inner (medial) wall, which separates the middle ear from the inner ear, or labyrinth, is a part of the bony otic capsule of the inner ear. It has two small openings, or fenestrae, one above the other. The upper one is the oval window, which is closed by the footplate of the stapes.

Is the cochlea in the middle ear?

The ear is composed of three parts: the outer ear and the middle ear transfer sound waves to the inner ear, or cochlea, which transforms the stimulus into a neural signal.

Where is the auditory nerve?

The cochlear nerve, also known as the acoustic or auditory nerve, is the cranial nerve responsible for hearing. It travels from the inner ear to the brainstem and out through a bone located on the side of the skull called the temporal bone.

What are Utricle and Saccules?

The utricle is a small membranous sac (part of the membranous labyrinth) and paired with the saccule lies within the vestibule of the inner ear. It has an important role in orientation and static balance, particularly in horizontal tilt.

What is the tympanic membrane connected to?

The tympanic membrane is attached to the bone by a fibrocartilaginous ring. For most of its circumference the membrane is attached in the tympanic sulcus to the tympanic element of the petrous part of the temporal bone.

What are tympanic thermometers?

Remote ear thermometers, also called tympanic thermometers, use an infrared ray to measure the temperature inside the ear canal. The pros: When positioned properly, infrared ear thermometers are quick and generally comfortable for children and adults.

What are the 5 parts of the ear?

• External or outer ear, consisting of: Pinna or auricle. This is the outside part of the ear. ...
• Tympanic membrane (eardrum). The tympanic membrane divides the external ear from the middle ear.
• Middle ear (tympanic cavity), consisting of: Ossicles. ...
• Inner ear, consisting of: Cochlea.

What's the top part of your ear called?

The outer ear is called the pinna and is made of ridged cartilage covered by skin. Sound funnels through the pinna into the external auditory canal, a short tube that ends at the eardrum (tympanic membrane).

What is Myringosclerosis?

Myringosclerosis refers to the calcification and thickening of the tympanic membrane.
