The thalamus is a paired gray matter structure of the diencephalon located near the center of the brain. It is above the midbrain or mesencephalon, allowing for nerve fiber connections to the cerebral cortex in all directions — each thalamus connects to the other via the interthalamic adhesion.

Where is the thalamus located and what is its role?

The thalamus is a small structure within the brain located just above the brain stem between the cerebral cortex and the midbrain and has extensive nerve connections to both. The primary function of the thalamus is to relay motor and sensory signals to the cerebral cortex.

What is the function of thalamus in brain?

While the thalamus is classically known for its roles as a sensory relay in visual, auditory, somatosensory, and gustatory systems, it also has significant roles in motor activity, emotion, memory, arousal, and other sensorimotor association functions.

What brain lobe is the thalamus located?

The thalamus is a paired structure of gray matter located in the forebrain which is superior to the midbrain, near the center of the brain, with nerve fibers projecting out to the cerebral cortex in all directions.

What are the symptoms of a damaged thalamus?

• Weakness on one side of the body.
• Issues with vision.
• Difficulty swallowing.
• Loss of memory.
• Burning.
• Confusion.
• Problems thinking or with judgment.
• Feelings of agitation.

Where is the thalamus?

Can the thalamus heal itself?

Not much is known about the basics of neuroplasticity of TBI and brain structures involved in it. Our review provides evidence that thalamus is naturally involved in recovery process as in mild TBIs.

Is thalamic stroke serious?

Thalamic strokes fall under the category of subcortical strokes, which affect the deeper brain regions beneath the cerebral cortex, as opposed to the outer cortical region. When a stroke occurs, it is a medical emergency as brain cells begin to die within minutes of losing blood supply.

What happens if the thalamus is damaged?

While thalamus damage primarily causes sensory problems, it can also lead to behavioral and cognitive changes. For example, many patients with a thalamus injury have incorrect speech patterns and can struggle to find the right words. Others display apathy and memory problems.

Are there two thalamus?

There are two thalami, one in each hemisphere of the brain. ... They lie above the brain stem and the midbrain (or mesencephalon), which allows for connections of nerve fibers to reach the cerebral cortex in all directions.

Where is the thalamus and hypothalamus?

Thalamus and hypothalamus are both parts of the brain. Along with the epithalamus and perithalamus, they are both located in the region of the brain called the diencephalon.

What is a thalamus stroke?

A thalamic stroke is a type of lacunar stroke, which refers to a stroke in a deep part of your brain. Thalamic strokes occur in your thalamus, a small but important part of your brain.

Can you live without a thalamus?

"The ultimate reality is that without thalamus, the cortex is useless, it's not receiving any information in the first place," said Theyel, a postdoctoral researcher. "And if this other information-bearing pathway is really critical, it's involved in higher-order cortical functioning as well."

What is an example of thalamus?

The thalamus is often described as a relay station. ... For example, visual information from your retina travels to the lateral geniculate nucleus of the thalamus, which is specialized to handle visual information, before being sent on to the primary visual cortex (the main area for visual processing in the brain).

Why is the thalamus so important?

The thalamus relays sensory impulses from receptors in various parts of the body to the cerebral cortex. A sensory impulse travels from the body surface towards the thalamus, which receives it as a sensation. ... Furthermore, the thalamus is crucial for perception, with 98% of all sensory input being relayed by it.

How does the thalamus regulate sleep?

During sleep, the thalamus stops relaying sensory information to the brain, however it continues to produce signals that are sent to its cortical projections.

How do you remember the thalamus function?

The thalamus is the brain's sensory switchboard. It directs messages to the sensory areas in the cortex and transmits replies to the cerebellum and medulla. Helpful mnemonic: Hal & Amos are traffic cops….

What does the thalamus do while driving?

While driving, if we suddenly see a child running across the road, our thalamus makes us step on the brakes. It allows us to maintain balance while driving. It helps us to remember how to operate a vehicle. It enables us to coordinate our hand and foot movements inorder to operate the vehicle.

What disorders are associated with the thalamus?

Disorders of the centrally located thalamus, which integrates a wide range of cortical and subcortical information. Manifestations include sensory loss, MOVEMENT DISORDERS; ATAXIA, pain syndromes, visual disorders, a variety of neuropsychological conditions, and COMA.

How does the thalamus affect memory?

Thalamus inputs to the prefrontal cortex sustained working memory by stabilizing activity there during the delay. ... Charles Gerfen of NIMH, similarly showed that the thalamus plays a crucial role in sustaining short-term memory. To gather a reward, mice needed to remember where to move after a delay of seconds.

What is thalamic pain?

Thalamic pain is a severe and treatment-resistant type of central pain that may develop after thalamic stroke. Lesions within the ventrocaudal regions of the thalamus carry the highest risk to develop pain, but its emergence in individual patients remains impossible to predict.

How many thalamus does the human brain have?

It is located deep in the forebrain, present just above the midbrain. One thalamus is present on each side of the third ventricle.

What part of the body does the thalamus control?

It is considered to be an organ of the limbic system in addition to its part in the central nervous system (CNS), as it connects specific portions of the cerebral cortex to parts of the brain and spinal cord which control the processing of sensory information and movement.

Does thalamus control balance?

The thalamus can divide into approximately 60 regions called nuclei. ... The thalamus (from the Greek thalamos or inner chamber) transmits 98 percent of sensory information to the cortex, including vision, taste, touch and balance; the only sense that doesn't pass through this brain region is smell.

What are the chances of walking after a stroke?

Depending on the severity of the stroke, survivors may have atrophied muscles, reduced stamina, and other physical limitations that may make it difficult to take even a few first steps. The good news is that the NIH reports that 65-85% of stroke victims do learn to walk independently again after 6 months.

What would happen if primary visual cortex is damaged?

Destruction of the primary visual cortex leads to blindness in the part of the visual field that corresponds to the damaged cortical representation. The area of blindness – known as a scotoma – is in the visual field opposite the damaged hemisphere and can vary from a small area up to the entire hemifield.
