The ilioinguinal nerve is a branch of the first lumbar nerve (L1). It separates from the first lumbar nerve along with the larger iliohypogastric nerve. It emerges from the lateral border of the psoas major just inferior to the iliohypogastric, and passes obliquely across the quadratus lumborum and iliacus.

What happens if ilioinguinal nerve is damaged?

Increased risk to the ilioinguinal nerve injury is well-recognized in inguinal herniorrhaphy, open appendectomy, and major gynecologic surgeries [2]. In severe injury cases, it produces burning or radiating pain on the inguinal region and genitalia corresponding to the sensory distribution of the nerve.

What muscles does ilioinguinal nerve innervate?

The ilioinguinal nerve innervates the anterior surface of the scrotum or labia majora, root of the penis or mons pubis, and a small portion of the upper antero-medial thigh. It also innervates the internal oblique and transversus abdominis muscles.

Where does the inguinal nerve originate?

The ilioinguinal nerve arises from the anterior ramus of the L1 nerve root from the lumbar plexus along with the iliohypogastric nerve.

Is ilioinguinal nerve in spermatic cord?

The ilioinguinal nerve is not actually located inside the spermatic cord, but runs outside it in the inguinal canal.

What type of nerve is ilioinguinal nerve?

The ilioinguinal nerve is a mixed nerve and gives off the following motor and sensory branches: Motor branches: Along its course over the posterior abdominal wall, the ilioinguinal nerve gives off motor branches that supply the transversus abdominis and internal oblique muscles.

What causes ilioinguinal nerve pain?

Ilioinguinal neuralgia is a frequent cause of pain in the lower abdomen and the upper thigh and is commonly caused by entrapment or injury of the nerve after lower abdominal surgeries. The ilioinguinal nerve is responsible for motor innervation of the transverse abdominis and internal oblique muscles.

Is ilioinguinal nerve a peripheral nerve?

Both the iliohypogastric (IH) and ilioinguinal (II) nerves arise from the first lumbar nerve (L1) on each side of the body. The ilioinguinal nerve is a smaller nerve and courses below the iliohypogastric nerve.

What nerve goes through the groin?

The femoral nerve is one of the largest nerves in your leg. It's located near the groin and controls the muscles that help straighten your leg and move your hips. It also provides feeling in the lower part of your leg and the front of your thigh.

What happens when the Genitofemoral nerve is damaged?

The symptoms include groin pain, paresthesias, and burning sensation spreading from the lower abdomen to the medial aspect of the thigh. It may present with scrotal pain in male, while females experience symptoms radiating to the labia majora and mons pubis.

How do you treat ilioinguinal nerve pain?

Initial treatment of ilioinguinal neuralgia will usually consist of anti-neuropathic, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory and weak opioid medication. Qutenza patches can also be considered as a conservative method of localised treatment.

What is ilioinguinal nerve entrapment?

The ilioinguinal nerve entrapment syndrome is an abdominal muscular pain syndrome, characterized by the clinical triad of muscular type iliac fossa pain with a characteristic radiation pattern, an altered sensory perception in the ilioinguinal nerve cutaneous innervation area, and a well-circumscribed trigger point ...

Which nerve passes under the inguinal ligament?

The femoral nerve arises from the posterior divisions of ventral rami of L2, L3, and L4, passes through the pelvis, deep to the inguinal ligament, just lateral to the femoral artery and enters the femoral triangle where it supplies muscles and cutaneous innervation of the thigh.

How is ilioinguinal nerve entrapment diagnosed?

Symptoms of ilioinguinal nerve entrapment may include hyperesthesia or hypoesthesia of the skin along the inguinal ligament. The sensation may radiate to the lower abdomen. Pain may be localized to the medial groin, the labia majora or scrotum, and the inner thigh. The characteristics of the pain may vary considerably.

How long does ilioinguinal nerve block last?

The steroid may remain effective for 1 – 6 months, depending on amount of irritation or inflammation present.

Can ilioinguinal nerve cause back pain?

Symptoms of ilioinguinal nerve injury include: Burning or stabbing pain, numbness, or tingling in the lower abdomen and groin. Difficulty extending the back as this movement causes more pain.

How do I get rid of a trapped nerve in my groin?

Do daily stretches to relieve pressure on your groin nerves. Apply a cold pack to reduce swelling or a hot pack to relax muscles. Consider using a standing desk or posture corrector to reduce pressure on your hips and groin and prevent nerve pinching. Take over-the-counter pain medications like ibuprofen (Advil).

What nerve controls the knee?

The femoral nerve helps move your hips and knees

It's one of the largest leg nerves and runs from your pelvis down the front of your leg. The nerve signals carried by the femoral nerve are a critical part of the ability to stand, walk, and maintain balance.

What nerve is connected to the knee?

Here are the popliteal vessels, coming in beneath the “semi “ muscles, and passing deep to the nerve. Above the knee the sciatic nerve divides into two major nerves - the tibial nerve, and the common peroneal nerve.

What does femoral nerve pain feel like?

Symptoms may include any of the following: Sensation changes in the thigh, knee, or leg, such as decreased sensation, numbness, tingling, burning, or pain. Weakness of the knee or leg, including difficulty going up and down stairs -- especially down, with a feeling of the knee giving way or buckling.

How do you treat inguinal ligament pain?

1. Ice the inside of your thigh to reduce pain and swelling. Experts recommend doing it for 20 to 30 minutes every 3 to 4 hours for 2 to 3 days, or until the pain is gone.
2. Compress your thigh using an elastic bandage or tape.
3. Take anti-inflammatory painkillers.

Does ilioinguinal nerve go through inguinal canal?

At the anterior end of the iliac crest the ilioinguinal nerve pierces the transversus abdominis and internal oblique muscles to enter the inguinal canal from the side, not through the deep ring.

What does inguinal ligament pain feel like?

Round ligament pain feels like a deep, sharp, stabbing or stretching sensation that begins or worsens with movement. Some triggering movements may include rolling over in bed or taking a step. The pain may travel upward or downward, from the hips into the groin.

What causes obturator pain?

Obturator neuropathy is a difficult clinical problem to evaluate. One possible cause of pain is due to fascial entrapment of the nerve. Symptoms include medial thigh or groin pain, weakness with leg adduction, and sensory loss in the medial thigh of the affected side.

Why does my inguinal ligament hurt?

The most common cause of groin pain is a muscle, tendon or ligament strain, particularly in athletes who play sports such as hockey, soccer and football. Groin pain might occur immediately after an injury, or pain might come on gradually over a period of weeks or even months.
