The clitellum is a thick, saddle-like ring found in the epidermis (skin) of the worm, usually with a light-colored pigment. To form a cocoon for its eggs, the clitellum secretes a viscous fluid. This organ is used in sexual reproduction of some annelids, such as leeches.

What is the function of a clitellum?

animal reproduction

Sexually mature oligochaetes have a clitellum, which is a modification of a section of the body wall consisting of a glandular, saddlelike thickening near the gonopores. During copulation, the clitellum secretes a mucus that keeps the worms paired while sperm are being exchanged.

What are the two main functions of the clitellum in an earthworm?

The clitellum is part of the reproductive system of earthworm. It also secretes a viscous fluid to form a cocoon for it's eggs. In earthworms the clitellum can only be seen when the worm is sexually mature.

Where is the clitellum located in a worm?

Adult (sexually mature) earthworms have a distinct swelling called a clitellum. It is located about one-third of the way down the earthworm. The clitellum is often white or orange in colour. It produces most of the material secreted to form earthworm cocoons.

What is the function of the clitellum quizlet?

What is the function of the clitellum, the only organ visible externally on earthworms? It secretes mucus that is important in reproduction. The worm alternates between extension and pulling the rest of its body after the extension.

The main function of clitellum is

What is the Clitellum quizlet?

Clitellum: series of anterior segments enclosed in thick glandular epidermis; encompasses females gonopores and secretes mucus. Hermaphrodites, zygotes develop in a coccon and emerge and juveniles, direct development.

In what direction does the axis of symmetry run?

The axis of symmetry splits the parabola in 2 equal parts. It runs through the vertex straight up and down (for a parabola that either opens up or opens down). And so we can write an equation for the line that is vertical and runs through the vertex. In this question, it's x=1 .

What is the purpose of excretory openings in earthworms?

Excretory System of Earthworms

Earthworms use diffusion to excrete carbon dioxide through their skin. For the nitrogenous wastes, the excretory system of earthworms contains specialized organs known as nephridia.

What clitellum means?

: a thickened glandular section of the body wall of some annelids that secretes a viscid sac in which the eggs are deposited.

What are the excretory organs of earthworm?

Nephridia are the primary excretory organs of earthworm that carry out the duties of excretion and osmoregulation. Based on where they remove the metabolic wastes, they are of two types – enteronephric nephridia and enteronephric nephridia.

What is the bump on an earthworm?

The bump is the clitellum, the saddle shaped swollen area 1/3 of the way back containing the gland cells which secrete a slimy material (mucus) to form the cocoon which will hold the worm embryos.

What does the pharynx do in an earthworm?

Pharynx. Earthworms push the pharynx out of their mouths to grasp hold of organic matter. They pull the food back into their mouths and then wet it with saliva.

What is the function of Nephridia in earthworm?

> Nephridia perform a vital role in the body of the earthworm as they help in removal of the waste products from the body.

What is the function of the crop and gizzard?

Note:The main function that is performed by the gizzard and crop is grinding the food and not storage. Food is stored in the crop which is the structure present just before the gizzard in the digestive system of insects.

Where are setae located on the earthworm?

Bristles, called setae, are located on each segment of the earthworm's body. They prevent the earthworm from slipping backwards.

In which segment clitellum is present?

Clitellum. The clitellum is a thickened glandular and non-segmented section of the body wall near the head in earthworms and leeches, that secretes a viscid sac in which the eggs are deposited. It is located near the anterior end of the body (around the 14th, 15th and 16th segments).

What is the function of excretory pore?

The role of the excretory cell is probably osmotic/ionic regulation and waste elimination, analogous to the renal system of higher animals. It presumably collects fluids and then empties them outside via the excretory duct and pore (Nelson and Riddle, 1984; Buechner et al., 1999).

How do worms excrete waste?

Worms have nephridia to filter out the dead cells and other wastes that are sloughed into the blood. Wastes from the nephridia are eliminated through the same opening as the digestive wastes. Worm urine is more dilute than ours, but has ammonia as well as urea. Heartbeats: Worms don't have just one heart.

What is the purpose of the excretory system?

The function of the excretory system to remove wastes from the body. These wastes include water, CO2, nitrogen, salts, and heat. Metabolism: The process of the body coverting food into energy. As a result of metabolism, there are waste products.

How do you find the axis of symmetry?

Test for symmetry with respect to the x-axis.

To check for symmetry with respect to the x-axis, just replace y with -y and see if you still get the same equation. If you do get the same equation, then the graph is symmetric with respect to the x-axis.

Which functions are symmetric about the y-axis?

A function symmetrical with respect to the y-axis is called an even function. A function that is symmetrical with respect to the origin is called an odd function.

What is symmetry about an axis?

Section 4-7 : Symmetry. ... A graph is said to be symmetric about the x -axis if whenever (a,b) is on the graph then so is (a,−b) . Here is a sketch of a graph that is symmetric about the x -axis. A graph is said to be symmetric about the y -axis if whenever (a,b) is on the graph then so is (−a,b) .

When earthworms mate the Clitellum does which of the following?

The earthworms each have two male openings and two sperm receptacles, which take in the sperm from another mate. The earthworms have a pair of ovaries that produce eggs. The clitellum will form a slime tube around it, which will fill with an albuminous fluid. The earthworm will move forward out of the slime tube.

Where are setae located and what do they resemble quizlet?

what are setae and where are they located? they are bristles on the underside of an earthworm. located between segments.
