September 15, 2017. On this date, the Cassini spacecraft plunged into the planet Saturn, becoming part of the planet it had been orbiting since 2004. The discoveries and new insights provided by the 13-year Cassini-Huygens mission at Saturn are far too numerous to recount here.

Is Cassini still orbiting Saturn?

Cassini Spacecraft Ends Its Historic Exploration of Saturn

NASA's Cassini spacecraft made its final approach to Saturn and dove into the planet's atmosphere on Friday, Sept. 15, 2017.

Why was Cassini destroyed?

The mission ended on September 15, 2017, when Cassini's trajectory took it into Saturn's upper atmosphere and it burned up in order to prevent any risk of contaminating Saturn's moons, which might have offered habitable environments to stowaway terrestrial microbes on the spacecraft.

What happened to the Cassini spacecraft?

The Cassini space probe was deliberately disposed of via a controlled fall into Saturn's atmosphere on September 15, 2017, ending its nearly two-decade-long mission.

Is Huygens still on Titan?

In 2005, the Huygens probe pierced the shroud of Saturn's moon Titan to reveal a surprisingly Earth-like world. The Huygens probe became — and thus far remains — the most distant human-made landing craft when it touched down on Titan's surface in 2005.

Where on Titan Did Huygens land?

Huygens entered Titan's atmosphere at 10:13 UTC on January 14, 2005 in SCET, according to ESA. The probe landed on the surface of Titan at about 10.6°S, 192.3°W around 12:43 UTC in SCET (2 hours 30 minutes after atmospheric entry).

What did Cassini discover about Titan?

Cassini-Huygens discovered that Titan has clouds, rain, lakes and rivers of liquid hydrocarbons, as well as a subsurface ocean of salty water.

Which planet is Cassini currently orbiting?

Cassini is orbiting Saturn right now, and continues to make phenomenal discoveries about the planet, its moons and rings. Cassini released the Huygens probe into Titan's gravity as the pair entered the Saturnian system in 2004.

How long does it take to communicate with Cassini?

How long does it take for Cassini's data to get to Earth? It takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes for the radio signals to reach us. The power of the transmitter is 20 watts. When received at the DSN antennas, the signal power is 10 to the -16th (0.0000000000000001) watts.

How much did the Cassini mission cost?

Cassini Launch Costs

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) estimates the Titan IV-Centaur launch of the Cassini spacecraft will cost $451.7 million, or about 17 percent of NASA's total estimated cost of $2.7 billion for the mission.

Does it rain diamonds on Saturn?

New research by scientists apparently shows that it rains diamonds on Jupiter and Saturn. ... According to the research lightning storms on the planets turn methane into soot which hardens into chunks of graphite and then diamonds as it falls.

Where is Pioneer 11 now 2019?

Pioneer 11 is currently in the constellation of Scutum.

What did Cassini carry with it and what did the passenger do?

Although there were no humans aboard the spacecraft, Cassini was carrying a "passenger." This passenger was named Huygens, and it was a European probe. This probe was the first manmade object designed to land on a planet so far away from Earth's atmosphere.

Will we ever land on Jupiter?

As a gas giant, Jupiter doesn't have a true surface. ... While a spacecraft would have nowhere to land on Jupiter, it wouldn't be able to fly through unscathed either. The extreme pressures and temperatures deep inside the planet crush, melt, and vaporize spacecraft trying to fly into the planet.

How many years did the Cassini mission last?

The Cassini mission was meant to last three years in orbit around Saturn, and instead the spacecraft spent 13 years, 76 days, orbiting Saturn. It gave us wonders to the end.

Has Jupiter been explored?

Mankind has been studying Jupiter for more than 400 years. Nine spacecraft have visited Jupiter since 1973, and they've discovered a lot about the planet. ...

Who built Cassini?

Cassini-Huygens is an international collaboration between three space agencies: NASA, ESA and the Italian space agency, Agenzia Spaziale Italiana (ASI). Seventeen nations contributed to building the spacecraft. The Cassini orbiter was built and managed by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

Can humans travel to Saturn?

In fact, over 760 Earths can fit inside. But hold up. We can't visit Saturn and skip over the best part, its iconic rings. Saturn's rings are almost as wide as the distance between the Earth and the moon, so at first glance, they seem like an easy place to land and explore on foot.

What is the most surprising substance that Cassini found in the clouds of Saturn?

Scientists say the cloud is made of poisonous hydrogen cyanide -- and much higher than would be predicted. A strange cloud that NASA's Cassini spacecraft spotted on Saturn's moon Titan two years ago appears to be made of icy hydrogen cyanide, a poison that on Earth has been used to kill everything from rats to whales.

What is Jupiter Cassini?

This true color mosaic of Jupiter was constructed from images taken by the narrow angle camera onboard NASA's Cassini spacecraft on December 29, 2000, during its closest approach to the giant planet at a distance of approximately 10 million kilometers (6.2 million miles).

What moons did Cassini discover?

Cassini was the first dedicated spacecraft to look at Saturn and its system. It was named for Giovanni Cassini, a 17th-century astronomer who was the first to observe four of Saturn's moons — Iapetus (1671), Rhea (1672), Tethys (1684) and Dione (1684).

What is the eventual fate of Triton?

Triton is also famous for its nitrogen geysers, a form of cryovolcanism. Triton will eventually share the same fate as Phobos at an estimated 3.6 billion years from now. Triton is the only moon in the Solar System known to orbit in the direction opposite of its planet's rotation.

Is Titan bigger than Earth?

It is also about 1.19 times as massive as Earth's overall, or about 7.3 times more massive on a per surface area basis. Opaque haze layers block most visible light from the Sun and other sources and obscure Titan's surface features. Titan's lower gravity means that its atmosphere is far more extended than Earth's.

Can humans land on Titan?

On January 14, 2005, humans successfully achieved an incredible feat unsurpassed to date. The European Space Agency's (ESA) Huygens probe, a metal pie-plate looking device 1.3 metres in diameter, parachuted down onto Titan, the largest of Saturn's moons, and landed unscathed on its surface.
