HDLC is commonly used in leased-line connections in which the WAN link's endpoints are terminated with CSU/DSUs (Channel Service Unit/Data Service Units) connected to Cisco routers running Internetwork Operating System (IOS). Routers and access servers from other vendors often use PPP instead of HDLC.

Is HDLC used today?

The networking industry has used HDLC to derive several other standards used today, such as frame relay protocols like the ISDN protocol stack known as Link Access Procedure Balanced (LAPB).

Why HDLC is needed?

High-level Data Link Control (HDLC) is a group of communication protocols of the data link layer for transmitting data between network points or nodes. Since it is a data link protocol, data is organized into frames. A frame is transmitted via the network to the destination that verifies its successful arrival.

How does HDLC work?

How HDLC Protocol Work? HDLC is a bit-stream protocol (bit streams are not broken into individual characters) that uses a 32-bit checksum for error correction and supports full-duplex communication. HDLC frames consist of a flag byte followed by address and control information, data bits, and a CRC byte.

What is the purpose of HDLC and PPP protocols?

The HDLC and PPP are the crucial data link layer protocols used in WAN (wide area network) where the HDLC can also be implemented with PPP for the efficient results. HDLC describes the encapsulation technique employed on the data in the synchronous serial data link.

High-Level Data Link Control (HDLC)

Which protocol used and implementing both HDLC and PPP?

1. Both HDLC and PPP are Data link layer protocols. Explanation: Both HDLC and PPP both are Data link layer protocol.

What is the use of PPP protocol?

Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) is a TCP/IP protocol that is used to connect one computer system to another. Computers use PPP to communicate over the telephone network or the Internet. A PPP connection exists when two systems physically connect through a telephone line. You can use PPP to connect one system to another.

What do you mean by HDLC protocol?

High-Level Data Link Control (HDLC) is a bit-oriented code-transparent synchronous data link layer protocol developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). ... HDLC provides both connection-oriented and connectionless service.

Which protocol is used in WAN?

The key WAN protocols that are in use are Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM), Broadband Access, Frame Relay, Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP), Synchronous Optical Network (SONET), Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH), X. 25, and a few other WAN protocols.

What are the routing protocols used in HDLC?

Basic of HDLC. HDLC is a layer two protocol that provides encapsulation method for serial link. Serial link and Ethernet link both use different encapsulation methods for data transmission.

What is the difference between PPP and HDLC?

The main difference between High-level Data Link Control (HDLC) and Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) is that High-level Data Link Control is the bit-oriented protocol, on the other hand, Point-to-Point Protocol is the byte-oriented protocol. ... HDLC is a bit oriented protocol. PPP is a byte oriented protocol.

Which of the following is not a protocol?

Answer: TCPI is not a network protocol.

What is the use of bridge in network?

Uses of Bridge

Bridges connects two or more different LANs that has a similar protocol and provides communication between the devices (nodes) in them. By joining multiple LANs, bridges help in multiplying the network capacity of a single LAN. Since they operate at data link layer, they transmit data as data frames.

Is HDLC full duplex?

HDLC is a bit-oriented code-transparent synchronous data link layer protocol. It provides the following features: HDLC works in full-duplex mode and can transmit data continuously without waiting for acknowledgement.

What is Frame Relay used for?

Frame relay is commonly used to connect two or more LAN bridges over large distances. The iSeries system supports these frame-relay network connections: Frame relay direct network: Allows data that uses SNA or TCP/IP communications over a frame-relay network to move at speeds of up to 2.048 Mbps.

How is connection performed in HDLC?

HDLC provides both connection-oriented and connectionless service. HDLC uses synchronous serial transmission to provide error-free communication between two points. HDLC defines a Layer 2 framing structure that allows for flow control and error control through the use of acknowledgments.

Which protocol is used in LAN?

3.2.

Ethernet protocol is a typical LAN technology. Standard Ethernet-based local area networks transmit data at speed up to 10 Mbps.

Is PPP protocol still used?

Nowadays it's still used for DSL with PPPoE (PPP over Ethernet) and PPPoA (PPP over ATM). ... One of the advantages of still using PPP is that it allows authentication through PAP and CHAP.

Is HDLC WAN protocol?

HDLC stands for High-Level Data Link Control protocol. Like the two other WAN protocols mentioned, HDLC is a Layer 2 protocol (see OSI Model for more information on Layers). HDLC is a simple protocol used to connect point to point serial devices.

What is bit stuffing with example?

In another example of bit stuffing, a standard High-Level Data Link Control (HDLC) packet begins and ends with 01111110. To make sure this sequence doesn't reappear before the end of the packet, a 0 is inserted after every five consecutive 1s.

What are the HDLC frame types?

• I-frame : I-frame stands for Information frames. This frame is generally used for transporting user data from network layer. ...
• S-frame : S-frame stands for Supervisory frames. ...
• U-frame : U-frame stands for Unnumbered frames.

How many fields are there in the HDLC frames?

Each of frames in HDLC includes mainly six fields. It begins with a flag field, an address field, a control field, an information field, an frame check sequence (FCS) field, and an ending flag field. The ending flag field of one frame can serve as beginning flag field of the next frame in multiple-frame transmissions.

Which two protocols are used in PPP?

PPP is designed to allow the simultaneous use of multiple network layer protocols, including IPv4 and v6, IPX, and AppleTalk. PPP operates using different network layer protocols (e.g., IPX and AppleTalk), whereas SLIP uses only TCP/IP-based IP.

What is HTTP protocol?

The Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) is an application-level protocol for distributed, collaborative, hypermedia information systems. ... Basically, HTTP is a TCP/IP based communication protocol, that is used to deliver data (HTML files, image files, query results, etc.) on the World Wide Web.

Which of the following services use TCP?

Which of the following services use TCP? Explanation: SMTP, HTTP and FTP use TCP.
