Where does chemiosmosis occur? In eukaryotes, it occurs in the mitochondria during cellular respiration and in the chloroplasts during photosynthesis. Prokaryotes lack these organelles and therefore chemiosmosis will occur in their cell membrane.

Where does chemiosmosis occur in the mitochondria?

Chemiosmosis involves the pumping of protons through special channels in the membranes of mitochondria from the inner to the outer compartment. The pumping establishes a proton (H⁺) gradient. After the gradient is established, protons diffuse down the gradient through a transport protein called ATP synthase.

Where does chemiosmosis take place and what does it produce?

D is correct. Chemiosmosis occurs in mitochondria during cellular respiration and in chloroplasts during photosynthesis. Both of these processes generate ATP.

What part of photosynthesis is chemiosmosis?

The ions flow through ATP synthase from the thylakoid space into the stroma in a process called chemiosmosis to form molecules of ATP, which are used for the formation of sugar molecules in the second stage of photosynthesis.

Does chemiosmosis occur in cellular respiration or photosynthesis?

Does Chemiosmosis Occur in Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration? Yes, chemiosmosis occurs in photosynthesis and respiration. During photosynthesis, chemiosmosis occurs in the chloroplasts, whereas during respiration, chemiosmosis occurs in the mitochondria.

Chemiosmosis (explained)

Does chemiosmosis happen in photosynthesis?

Where does chemiosmosis occur? In eukaryotes, it occurs in the mitochondria during cellular respiration and in the chloroplasts during photosynthesis.

How does chemiosmosis work in photosynthesis?

The light reactions use solar power to reduce NADP+ to NADPH by adding a pair of electrons along with an H+. The light reactions also generate ATP, using chemiosmosis to power the addition of a phosphate group to ADP, a process called photophosphorylation.

Where are protons pumped in chloroplasts?

As illustrated in Figure 14-49, in chloroplasts, H⁺ is pumped out of the stroma (pH 8) into the thylakoid space (pH ~5), creating a gradient of 3–3.5 pH units. This represents a proton-motive force of about 200 mV across the thylakoid membrane, and it drives ATP synthesis by the ATP synthase embedded in this membrane.

Where does electron transport chain occur?

The electron transport chain is a series of four protein complexes that couple redox reactions, creating an electrochemical gradient that leads to the creation of ATP in a complete system named oxidative phosphorylation. It occurs in mitochondria in both cellular respiration and photosynthesis.

Which of the following is a part of the process of chemiosmosis?

This process is related to osmosis, the diffusion of water across a membrane, which is why it is called "chemiosmosis". ATP synthase is the enzyme that makes ATP by chemiosmosis. It allows protons to pass through the membrane and uses the free energy difference to phosphorylate adenosine diphosphate (ADP), making ATP.

Where does oxidative phosphorylation occur?

Oxidative phosphorylation takes place in the inner mitochondrial membrane, in contrast with most of the reactions of the citric acid cycle and fatty acid oxidation, which take place in the matrix.

Where does pyruvate oxidation occur?

Pyruvate oxidation steps

Pyruvate is produced by glycolysis in the cytoplasm, but pyruvate oxidation takes place in the mitochondrial matrix (in eukaryotes). So, before the chemical reactions can begin, pyruvate must enter the mitochondrion, crossing its inner membrane and arriving at the matrix.

What does chemiosmosis involve quizlet?

Chemiosmosis involves the pumping of protons through special channels in the membranes of mitochondria from the inner to the outer compartment. The pumping establishes a proton gradient. After the gradient is established, protons diffuse down the gradient through a transport protein called ATP synthase.

How is ATP formed by chemiosmosis?

1: Chemiosmosis: In oxidative phosphorylation, the hydrogen ion gradient formed by the electron transport chain is used by ATP synthase to form ATP. ... The turning of this molecular machine harnesses the potential energy stored in the hydrogen ion gradient to add a phosphate to ADP, forming ATP.

Is chemiosmosis part of the electron transport chain?

The electron transport chain and ATP synthase are embedded in the inner mitochondrial membrane. ... This process, in which energy from a proton gradient is used to make ATP, is called chemiosmosis.

What is the role of chemiosmosis process in the chloroplast?

Chemiosmosis in chloroplasts that results in the donation of a proton for the production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) in plants.

Where does the electron transport chain in photosynthesis take place?

Photosynthesis occurs in the chloroplast, an organelle specific to plant cells. The light reactions of photosynthesis occur in the thylakoid membranes of the chloroplast. Electron carrier molecules are arranged in electron transport chains that produce ATP and NADPH, which temporarily store chemical energy.

Where do protons come from in electron transport chain?

In the process, protons are pumped from the mitochondrial matrix to the intermembrane space, and oxygen is reduced to form water. The electron transport chain (Figure 1) is the last component of aerobic respiration and is the only part of glucose metabolism that uses atmospheric oxygen.

Where is the photosynthetic electron transport chain located?

In photosynthetic eukaryotes, the electron transport chain is found on the thylakoid membrane.

Where does photosynthesis occur?

In plants, photosynthesis takes place in chloroplasts, which contain the chlorophyll. Chloroplasts are surrounded by a double membrane and contain a third inner membrane, called the thylakoid membrane, that forms long folds within the organelle.

In what direction are protons pumped by the electron transport chain in chloroplasts?

Therefore, the oxidation and the phosphorylation of ADP are coupled by a proton gradient across the membrane. In both organelles mitochondria and chloroplast, electron transport chains pump protons across a membrane from a low proton concentration region to one of high concentration.

Where are chloroplasts found?

Where are chloroplasts found? Chloroplasts are present in the cells of all green tissues of plants and algae. Chloroplasts are also found in photosynthetic tissues that do not appear green, such as the brown blades of giant kelp or the red leaves of certain plants.

Where does carbon fixation occur in photosynthesis?

Carbon fixation is the process by which inorganic carbon is added to an organic molecule. Carbon fixation occurs during the light independent reaction of photosynthesis and is the first step in the C3 or Calvin Cycle.

How is chemiosmosis different than photosynthesis?

Chemiosmosis refers to specific steps within the electron transport chain utilized to create ATP. ... This energy is then used to drive ATP synthesis. In cellular respiration, food is converted into ATP, while photosynthesis uses light energy to release ATP.

Where do H+ accumulate How do protons accumulate in this part of the thylakoid?

Protons (H+) accumulate in the thylakoid space during electron transport between photosystems-I and II. The excess of protons in the thylakoid space.
