Common uses and advantages Post-tensioning now is used extensively in bridges, elevated slabs (parking structures and residential or commercial buildings), residential foundations, walls, and columns. Jim Rogers Bending and flexing creates high tensile forces that can cause the concrete floor slab to crack.

What is post-tensioned concrete used for?

Designers use post-tensioning as a way to reinforce concrete by prestressing it. In prestressed members, compressive stresses are introduced into the concrete to reduce tensile stresses resulting from applied loads including the self weight of the member (dead load).

What are the applications of post-tensioning?

• It reduces or eliminates shrinkage cracking-therefore no joints, or fewer joints, are needed.
• Cracks that do form are held tightly together.
• It allows slabs and other structural members to be thinner.
• It allows us to build slabs on expansive or soft soils.

What is the benefit of post tension slab?

PT allows you to design longer unsupported spans that are strong with thinner floors. This makes post-tensioning an ideal technique for creating concrete slabs for expansive structures such as parking garages, auditoriums, roofs, bridges, and customized architectural designs.

Why we use PT slab?

Post tension slab is a combination of conventional slab reinforcement and additional protruding high-strength steel tendons, which are consequently subjected to tension after the concrete has set. This hybridisation helps achieve the formation of a much thinner slab with a longer span devoid of any column-free spaces.

Post-tensioned slab procedure

Why is post tension used?

The use of post-tensioning allows thinner concrete sections, longer spans between supports, stiffer walls to resist lateral loads and stiffer foundations to resist the effects of shrinking and swelling soils.

What is post tensioning in construction?

Post tensioning is a technique for reinforcing concrete. ... Post-tensioned concrete means that the concrete is poured and then the tension is applied-but it is still stressed before the loads are applied so it is still prestressed.

What is the strongest foundation for a house?

Foundations are mostly constructed from strong material so they can hold the house in place even during earthquakes and cyclones. Therefore, they are generally made up of concrete which is the strongest construction material.

Which is better pre tensioning or post-tensioning?

Pre-tensioning is preferred when the structural element is small and easy to transport. Post-tensioning is preferred when the structural element is heavy.

Can I drill into a post tension slab?

PT slabs on ground can be placed and stamped just like with any other concrete slab. ... The only concern is to always remember not to cut or drill into post-tensioned concrete slabs, since once a tendon has been cut, it is very difficult to repair.

What is slab application?

Concrete slabs have become fairly common structural elements in modern buildings. Thick concrete slabs are commonly used in the construction of ceilings and floors, while leaner ones (at times called 'mud slabs') are used for exterior paving.

Are post tensioned slabs good?

Post-tensioning provides high strength and stability, but looks just like any other concrete slab. While most home projects don't require post-tensioning, it could still be a useful technique for some builders.

Do post-tension slabs have rebar?

With a post-tension foundation, the contractor digs the perimeter trench in much the same way as in the conventional foundation. ... Rebar and fill sand are used in a similar way as conventional foundation, but a post-tension foundation also includes steel cables that form a grid pattern across the entire slab.

How does post-tensioning concrete work?

In Post Tensioned concrete, the steel is tensioned and concrete is compressed, placing both building materials in their strongest states. Reinforcing cables are laid inside ducts and tensioned after the concrete is placed. These tendons are then grouted.

Which of the following systems are used as anchorage for post-tensioning?

Explanation: The Freyssinet anchorage system is widely used in Europe and India consists of a cylinder with a conical interior through which the high tensile wires pass and against the walls of which the wires are wedged by a conical plug lined longitudinally with grooves to house the wires.

What is post-tensioning in a suspended floor slab?

Post-tensioning is a method of applying compression after pouring concrete. Galvanised duct which is profiled using bar chairs follows the area where otherwise tension would occur in the concrete element. Steel strand (12.7mm typically) is pushed through the duct (known as tendons) and the concrete is poured.

What is the difference between pre tensioned and post tensioned beams or slabs?

Pretension is the technique in which we are imparting tension in strands before placing the concrete. Post tensioning is done by forming a duct in which strands are pulled (tensioned) after the concrete gains it's full strength. ... This method is done due to bonding between concrete and steel.

What is flat slab?

A flat slab is a two-way reinforced concrete slab that usually does not have beams and girders, and the loads are transferred directly to the supporting concrete columns. For more detailed definition: Flat Slab Floor System: Definition & Description.

What type of structure do you recommend Post Tensioning?

Common uses and advantages

Post-tensioning now is used extensively in bridges, elevated slabs (parking structures and residential or commercial buildings), residential foundations, walls, and columns. Jim Rogers Bending and flexing creates high tensile forces that can cause the concrete floor slab to crack.

What is wrong with a slab foundation?

One of the most significant potential disadvantages is if the slab cracks. This can substantially compromise the structural integrity of the house and be difficult and expensive to repair. Among the factors that can result in a slab cracking are tree roots, soil displacement, earthquakes, or frozen ground.

Is it better to have a slab or crawl space?

Wet Conditions. For a damp climate, a concrete slab foundation is better, but if your house rests on a flood-prone area or sees a lot of rain, a crawl space is ideal. A crawl space foundation that is well-protected is less likely to get flooded, unlike a slab foundation, which can transfer water through the slab.

What is the cheapest house foundation?

If you're building a home, a concrete slab makes sense because of its low cost. It's the cheapest option available, and, comparatively speaking, it's the quickest solution. The right crew can lay a concrete slab foundation in a short period of time, and the drying process doesn't take much longer.

When did they start using post tensioned slabs?

The first post-tensioning in U.S. building construction was in the mid- to late 1950s in buildings using the lift- slab construction method.

Is post-tensioning system economical?

Both the systems were analysed using SAP and MS Excel program was developed based on the design methodology. The results indicate that Post Tensioned flat slabs are cheaper than the RCC slab systems for all the spans considered in the present study.

What are the disadvantages of Post Tensioning?

• Since there are a number of tendons and wires spread inside the post tension slab, it can result in corrosion. ...
• Complexity of work: The post tension slab can be made only by skillful professionals.
