Cofferdams are commonly used for construction or repair of permanent dams, oil platforms, bridge piers, etc., built within or over water. These cofferdams are usually welded steel structures, with components consisting of sheet piles, wales, and cross braces.

How are cofferdams used during foundation construction?

A cofferdam is a temporary structure designed to keep water and/or soil out of the excavation in which a bridge pier or other structure is built. When construction must take place below the water level, a cofferdam is built to give workers a dry work environment.

Where is the cofferdam?

The cofferdam is also installed around the main engine lube oil drain or sump tank, mainly to separate it from other double bottom tanks. The main engine is provided with the bed plate which carries the oil sump. The bedplate is mounted and secured to the engine foundation plate using chocks and holding down bolts.

In which condition a cofferdam is not required?

Explanation: The cofferdam is generally constructed at the site of work. The cofferdam should be reasonably watertight. It may either raised on the impervious soil or may be extended to impervious strata through pervious soils. It should be noted that absolute water tightness is not desired in a cofferdam.

How do cofferdams work?

Constructing a cellular cofferdam is done by driving sheet piles in a circular pattern, and then repeating this process adjacent to the original to form a series of circular cells. Each of these cells connects to one another and forms a tight seal that prevents water from entering.

What are Cofferdams and How are They Used?

What are the types of cofferdams?

• Earthen cofferdam.
• Rockfill cofferdam.
• Single-walled cofferdam.
• Double-walled cofferdam.
• Braced cofferdam.
• Cellular cofferdam (Circular or diaphragm type)

Who invented cofferdams?

The first cofferdams were said to be used by King Cyrus of Persia in 539 B.C. to temporarily divert water from the Euphrates river, allowing the capture of Babylon. This capture of Babylon ended their rule, allowing the Medo-Persian empire to begin.

What are cofferdams and caissons?

The main difference between the two is that a cofferdam is a temporary structure which is removed after completion of the work, whereas a caisson is built to remain in place as part of the completed structure. ...

What do you mean by coffer dam?

A cofferdam is an enclosure built within a body of water to allow the enclosed area to be pumped out. ... Cofferdams are commonly used for construction or repair of permanent dams, oil platforms, bridge piers, etc., built within or over water.

What is sheet pile cofferdams?

The purpose of a cofferdam is to exclude water and/or soil from an area required for construction work, to a depth below the surface. ... Cofferdam walls are formed from sheet piles acting in cantilever or supported by walers, internal braces and external anchors.

How deep can cofferdams be?

Single-walled

This type of cofferdam is most suitable when the area to be enclosed is particularly small and the water is of a deeper level, roughly 4-6 m.

How is pneumatic caisson used?

A pneumatic caisson is a watertight box or cylinder-like structure that is closed at the top and open at the bottom, resting on the bed of the waterbody. They are used for underwater construction of foundations for bridge piers, abutments in rivers, and foundations for large multi-story buildings.

What is the use of caisson foundation?

Caisson is used in building bridge piers as it stays in water almost all the time. Caisson is constructed in connection with excavation for the foundation of piers and abutments in rivers and lake, bridges breakwater dock structures for the point of view of shore protection, lamp house etc.

What is well foundation?

Well foundation is a type of deep foundation which is generally provided below the water level for bridges. Cassions or well have been in use for foundations of bridges and other structures since Roman and Mughal periods. The term 'cassion' is derived from the French word caisse which means box or chest.

What is the difference between cofferdams and bulkhead?

is that bulkhead is (nautical) a vertical partition dividing the hull into separate compartments; often made watertight to prevent excessive flooding if the ship's hull is breached while cofferdam is a temporary watertight structure that is pumped dry to enclose an area underwater and allow construction work on a ship, ...

How are sheet piles used?

Sheet Piling is used to provide temporary and permanent walls in the construction industry. Sheet piling is used as excavation support and for soil retention. It creates a border which keeps the soil back, away from the structure.

What is a coffer cell?

The coffer cell is a large steel structure that measures 35 feet tall by 45 feet wide by 144 feet long. It was built in Tacoma and towed to Lake Washington on a barge. Once in place, the coffer cell will be used by SR 520 bridge construction crews to repair two concrete pontoons on the lake.

What are cofferdams made out of?

Cofferdams are built by creating a watertight enclosure from which water is pumped to expose the bed of a body of water in order to begin construction work. Traditional cofferdams are built by driving sheet piling — typically made of steel — into a sea floor or lakebed to create a watertight dam.

What is the purpose of diaphragm wall?

Diaphragm walls are underground structural elements commonly used as retention systems and permanent foundation walls. They can also be used as groundwater barriers.

What are the advantages of cofferdam?

A cofferdam is a (usually) temporary structure that provides a dedicated barrier against water intrusion. Many construction sites use cofferdams to create a temporary dam so they can get on with their project without having to work in water, or to make the construction project possible in the first place.

Which is most common type of coffer dam?

• Cofferdams usually fall into these categories: Cantilever Sheet Pile Cofferdam. ...
• Cantilever Sheet Piles. ...
• Earth Embankment. ...
• Rock-fill Embankment. ...
• Double-Wall sheet piles. ...
• Cellular Cofferdams.

Are dams hollow?

Hollow gravity dam. A dam constructed of concrete and/or masonry on the outside but having a hollow interior relying on its weight for stability. Crib dam. A gravity dam built up of boxes, crossed timbers, or gabions filled with earth or rock.

What are concrete dams?

A concrete dam is a structure designed and built for the purpose of holding back water, that is usually placed across the path of a river. ... Concrete itself is a building material made from water, cement, sand and gravel, or aggregate. Concrete dams can be built for power generation, water management and flood control.

Are caissons still used?

Caissons are generally used as the means to complete new construction, and may act as a cofferdam of sorts while the construction is ongoing.
