Also called trichloromethane, chloroform is prepared through the chlorination of methane gas. It was first prepared in 1831 by the American chemist Dr. Samuel Guthrie, who combined whiskey with chlorinated lime in an attempt to produce a cheap pesticide.

Who discovered Trichloromethane?

It is widely accepted that Sir James Young Simpson discovered the anaesthetic properties of chloroform and pioneered its application in surgery and midwifery. The name of Simpson is not infrequently also associated with the discovery of chloroform and of anaesthesia.

When did they start using chloroform?

Introduced in 1847 by Sir James Young Simpson, chloroform was first used, though very rarely, during the Mexican-American War (1846-47). Physicians began using it in civilian practice in the late 1840s and 1850s and it was extensively used during the Civil War.

With Dr. Morton's tenacity driven by enthusiasm and discovery, he and renowned surgeon at Massachusetts General Hospital, John Collins Warren (1778-1856) made history on October 16, 1846 with the first successful surgical procedure performed with anesthesia.

When did they stop using chloroform as an anaesthetic?

Chloroform was gradually replaced in the first half of the 20th century by the safer (although highly inflammable) ether, which is still used as an inexpensive anaesthetic today in some developing nations.

Why does chloroform make you pass out instantly?

Obviously they affect the nervous system. One idea is they affect the flux of potassium ions and this affects the body's response to nerves. Another idea is that the chloroform interferes with the cell membranes and slows down the passage of nerves which makes people less likely to feel pain.

Do doctors still use chloroform?

Usage of ether and chloroform later declined after the development of safer, more effective inhalation anesthetics, and they are no longer used in surgery today.

How was surgery done before anesthesia?

Before the advent of anaesthetics in the 1840s, surgical operations were conducted with little or no pain relief and were attended with great suffering and emotional distress. It has generally been assumed that in order to cope with such challenges, surgeons developed a culture of dispassion and emotional detachment.

Why was choking used for anesthesia?

General anesthesia suppresses many of your body's normal automatic functions, such as those that control breathing, heartbeat, circulation of the blood (such as blood pressure), movements of the digestive system, and throat reflexes such as swallowing, coughing, or gagging that prevent foreign material from being ...

How was Anaesthetic discovered?

Anaesthesia produced by nerve block, or regional anaesthesia, became possible after cocaine was isolated from the coca plant in 1860. Dr Karl Koller first produced anaesthesia of the skin and mucous membranes in 1884.

What was chloroform used for in the 19th century?

Used in the Crimean, Punjab and American Civil wars, it saved thousands of soldiers from suffering extreme surgical ordeals. Chloroform was also used to treat asthma and cholera, as a rather dubious 'cure' for gonorrhoea and as a sweetener in medicines.

Who discovered chloroform and in which year?

The first narcosis with chloroform was performed by James Young Simpson on himself on November 4, 1847. The chemical substance had been first produced in 1831 almost simultaneously in the USA by Samuel Guthrie and in France by Eugène Soubeiran.

How is Trichloromethane formed?

Citric acid reacted with chlorine and produced trichloromethane. Over 1000 μg L⁻¹ trichloromethane was produced after 30 min reaction with chlorine at 22 °C, while less than 35 μg L⁻¹ trichloromethane was produced when Na-phosphate was used to adjust pH of chlorine.

How fast can chloroform knock you out?

It takes at least five minutes of inhaling an item soaked in chloroform to render a person unconscious.

What does chloroform smell like?

Chloroform is a sweet-smelling liquid, similar to ether, along with a slightly sweet taste. Some people compare the smell to the smell of disinfectants, similar to the smell that is perceived in hospitals and medical facilities.

What drug do doctors use to knock you out?

“Propofol is the sedative of choice given to first knock you out. Usually, other anesthetics are then given to keep you under,” van Swinderen added.

Why should we not drink water before surgery?

Usually, before having a general anaesthetic, you will not be allowed anything to eat or drink. This is because when the anaesthetic is used, your body's reflexes are temporarily stopped. If your stomach has food and drink in it, there's a risk of vomiting or bringing up food into your throat.

Why is chewing gum not allowed before surgery?
