Conformal coatings can be used in a wide range of environments to protect printed circuit boards from moisture, salt spray, chemicals and temperature extremes in order to prevent such things as corrosion, mould growth and electrical failures.

Why do we use conformal coating?

Reasons for use

Conformal coatings are used to protect electronic components from the environmental factors they are exposed to. Examples of these factors include moisture, dust, salt, chemicals, temperature changes and mechanical abrasion. Successful conformal coating will prevent the board from corroding.

Is conformal coating necessary?

Using conformal coating is absolutely necessary for your PCBs if you want to protect them from contaminants and dangerous environments. For instance, excess moisture can speed up decomposition, reduce insulation resistance and result in conductor corrosion.

Does conformal coating protect against moisture?

Conformal coatings protect electronic devices from a variety of environments, providing some level of moisture resistance. However, highly humid environments where moisture is ubiquitous can be more challenging when it comes to reliable performance.

How is conformal coating applied?

There are five methods used to apply conformal coatings, – hand coating via Brush, Aerosol, or atomised spray gun, – or automated Dip coating and Selective Coating Machine.

Where is conformal coating used?

Conformal coatings can be used in a wide range of environments to protect printed circuit boards from moisture, salt spray, chemicals and temperature extremes in order to prevent such things as corrosion, mould growth and electrical failures.

How do you protect your PCB from moisture?

1. Perform lamination in a controlled environment. ...
2. Ensure prepregs are moisture-free. ...
3. Use meshed copper planes. ...
4. Apply surface finishing. ...
5. Baking. ...
6. Apply coating. ...
7. Store boards in moisture barrier bags. ...
8. Follow IPC Guidelines.

Is solder mask conformal coating?

Solder Mask is a protective coating applied to the bare printed circuit board. ... Conformal coating is also a protective coating but it's applied to the assembled board rather than the unpopulated bare board.) Solder mask is usually green but many other colors are available.

How do I protect my electronics from humidity?

1. Conformal Coating and Enclosure. Of course, the easiest solution for keeping your electronics safe from moisture is to apply a conformal coating to the board. ...
2. Suction Fan. ...
3. Silica Gel. ...
4. Heating Elements.

Why conformal coating is used in PCB?

A conformal coating ensures the protection against PCB against these types of environmental contaminants and conditions. By providing protection from contaminants and environmental factors, the conformal coatings prevent corrosion of conductors, solder joints and short circuits.

How long does conformal coating last?

Oxidation and Temperature:

It was reported that the minimum useful lifetime of Parylene conformal coating at 25 °C (in the absence of light) is 2,200 years for type N and 130,000 years for type C.

What is polyurethane conformal coating?

Polyurethanes (Urethane Resin- UR) are polymeric, flexible, insulating, hard and chemically resistant (Acid—Alkali—Salty water) conformal coatings that are used to protect electronic parts from chemical corrosion, oil, moisture, fungus, and static discharges.

Is conformal coating electrically conductive?

No, conformal coatings are non-conductive, or insulative. ... To do that properly, a coating must have electrically insulating properties with as high of a dielectric withstand voltage (or strength) as possible.

How do you protect electronics from corrosion?

Non-metal enclosures can protect against rust and corrosion, and they can be made in any shape and size. They also are regularly manufactured to a variety of IP ratings. Ultimately, the best protection for electronics is a combination of coating and enclosing. The conformal coating provides an initial layer.

Can solder mask be used as an insulator?

By definition solder mask is not an insulator. ... Once the soldering operation is finish the functionality of the solder is complete.

Is solder mask necessary?

To us, soldermask protects exposed metal, reduce the chance of shorts and keeps solder where solder needs to be. ... If you're hand building your own boards, it may be a viable option, but it can lead to so many other problems down the road, we recommend always having a soldermask. Always.

Is solder mask a dielectric?

However, many of us designers overlooked a single property of solder masks, which may return to haunt us in some scenarios. The solder mask dielectric constant. ... The same parameter is also applicable to solder masks that are often spread across the entire PCB. Often, the value is around 3.3 to 3.8, when rated at 1 GHz.

How do you protect PCB from oxidation?

Preventing corrosion can be as simple as placing a conformal coating over exposed copper areas. Epoxy coatings, aerosol spray coatings, and solder mask are all effective barriers to oxidation and corrosion.

Which Colour of solder mask is used on PCBS?

Green is the most ideal solder mask color for printed circuit boards. This color ensures clear visibility of the components placed on it. The contrast between the traces, planes, and vacant spaces are very high on a green PCB. The color also offers the right contrast with the white legend.

How do you brush conformal coating?

The correct technique for applying conformal coating by brush is to flow the coating on. The material should not be brushed on like you are decorating with paint. The coating should be loaded on to the brush and flowed onto the printed circuit board.
