When is chargeable weight?
Jessica Young Chargeable weight is the number on your invoice; it's the amount the carrier charged to move your shipment. The chargeable weight is whichever of the following is greater: The gross weight (including the product, packaging, pallet, etc.), or. The volumetric weight.
How do you determine chargeable weight?
The chargeable weight is either the actual gross weight or the volume weight, the chargeable weight = the actual weight VS the volume weight, and the larger one is the weight for calculating the shipping cost.
What is chargeable weight and gross weight?
The gross, or actual, weight figure represents the weight provided by the customer shipping the freight when requesting the shipping quote. It's the actual weight of the item, crate and packing materials. The chargeable weight represents the greater of: the gross weight or. the volumetric weight.
How do you calculate chargeable weight for road freight?
When computing the road freight volumetric weight, you can either calculate the volumetric weight in meters or centimetres, by multiplying length X weight X height. In most cases, you then need to divide this number by 5000. Some carriers may ask you to divide it by 4000.
How cargo works in actual weight volumetric weight and chargeable weight?
The actual weight and dimensional weight are then compared, and the greater of the two weights is used to calculate your rate. This is called the chargeable weight. Typically, the actual weight will exceed the dimensional weight, and thus would be used as the chargeable weight.

What is chargeable weight for freight?
The Chargeable Weight is the Actual Gross Weight or the Volumetric Weight of the shipment – whichever is the greater. Typically, large items with a light overall weight take up more space on an aircraft than a small, heavy item.
How do you calculate chargeable weight in CM?
The Chargeable Weight (cw) of an airfreight is determined by the actual gross weight (gw) or the volume weight (vw), whichever is greater. Air Freight Chargeable Weight formula: Imperial: L x W x H in inches (in.) / 165 = vw (in lbs.) Metric: L x W x H in centimetres (cm.) / 6,000 = vw (in kgs)
How is IATA chargeable weight calculated?
1.8 Cubic Metres X 333 = 599.4 Kilos, so the Chargeable Weight is based on 599 Kilos. In this instance the Freight Charges for Ocean Freight are calculated as 1.8 Cubic Metres X 1,000 = 1,800 Kgs, so the Chargeable Weight is based on 1,800 Kgs.
How many CBM is 1 kg?
EQUIVALENCE: 1 CBM = 333 KG.
How do you calculate gross weight and chargeable weight?
- Step 1: Calculate the volume of the air freight shipment. Volume = length x width x height. ...
- Step 2: Convert the imperial measurement (cubic inches) into cubic meters. ...
- Step 3: Finalise the volumetric weight. ...
- Step 4: Convert weight into kilograms. ...
- Step 5: Compare the gross weight with the volumetric weight.
What is CW in shipping?
Chargeable Weight (CW) or paying weight was created as a conversion factor for air freight in order to bridge the difference between volume and weight.
What is the difference between actual weight and volumetric weight?
What's The Difference Between Actual & Volumetric Weight? Actual weight is the true weight of the package as it says on the weighing scale. ... Volumetric weight is how much space the package occupies according to its dimensions, which is then converted to its equivalent weight.
Why do we divide by 6000 for volumetric weight?
If the cargo measurement are in centimeters, the total volume of cm3 to be divided with 6000. ... Air carriers charge airfreight on the basis of volume weight or actual gross weight which ever is higher. So the chargeable weight is calculated on the basis of volume weight or gross weight, whichever is highter.
What is the dimension of 1 CBM?
For 1 CBM, all three dimensions are considered (length, width, and height). This measurement refers to a cube worth of space that's one meter all around. In essence, it measures the volume of a space.
How is RT calculated in shipping?
Revenue ton (R/T)- The greater of the total number of cubic meters versus the total number of metric tons;
- The greater of total cubic feet/40 versus the total gross weight in pounds/2.000;
- The greater of total cubic feet/40 versus the total gross weight in pounds/2.234.
When the cargo is a low density one volume weight will be the chargeable weight?
Low Density Cargo is charged higher than the actual weight.
One of the best ways to explain volume pricing is when a "really big shipment does not weight much." In industry terms, this is described as Low Density Cargo: Low density cargo, is charged at “volume weight” rather than actual weight.
How volumetric weight is calculated?
Volumetric weight can be calculated by multiplying the length, width and height of a parcel (in cm) and dividing that figure by 5000 (some carriers use a divisor of 4000). You may often find that the price of your shipment is dictated by the volumetric weight of your parcel(s) rather than the physical weight.
What is the difference between LCL and FCL?
What's the difference between FCL and LCL? ... For FCL shipments, all goods in a container are owned by one party, while LCL involves multiple shippers' goods packed together. Business needs and inventory requirements determine a company's shipping decision, along with factors like cost and commodity type.

How is CBM calculated for shipping?
CBM – cubic meter is calculated by multiplying length, width and height of packages of goods. For example, if the length, height and width of a cargo is 2.3 meters, 1.4meters and 2 meters respectively, the volume of cargo is 2.3 X 1.4 X 2.00 = 6.44 CBM.
How is volume weight calculated for sea freight?
Multiply the length x height x width in centimetres and divide the answer by 5,000. The result is the volumetric weight. The answer should be compared with the actual weight in kg. Whichever is the greater figure should be used to charge by the shipment company.
