As ALP is most abundant in the bones and liver, elevated ALP levels are generally a sign of a liver or bone condition. An obstruction of the liver or damage to it will cause ALP levels to rise. This will also occur if there is an increase in bone cell activity.

When is alkaline phosphatase high?

High alkaline phosphatase levels may mean there is damage to your liver or that you have a type of bone disorder. Liver damage creates a different type of ALP than bone disorders do.

What is considered a high alkaline phosphatase level?

The normal range of alkaline phosphatase in the blood is 20 to 140U/L, although this can vary from lab to lab. Children and pregnant women can have significantly higher levels of the enzyme in their blood [1]. Values above 130 U/L are usually considered to be high.

What other diseases will cause elevation of alkaline phosphatase?

Bone pathology causes of elevated alkaline phosphatase include Paget's disease, hyperparathyroidism, osteomalacia, metastatic bone disease and a recent fracture.

What is alkaline phosphatase a marker of?

ALP is a leading biomarker of hepatobiliary injury in common preclinical species. Serum ALP levels increase when the patency of the bile duct is reduced, so ALP is widely used in nonclinical and human clinical settings as a marker of cholestatic liver injury.

Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP) | Lab Test 🧪

When should I worry about alkaline phosphatase?

Slightly irregular ALP levels are usually no cause for concern. However, severely abnormal levels can signify a severe underlying medical condition, typically one relating to the liver, bones, or gallbladder.

Does alkaline phosphatase increase with age?

In children, serum alkaline phosphatase concentrations are considerably higher than in adults and correlate with the rate of bone growth. In adults, values are slightly higher in men than in women, but after age 60 years, the enzyme value is equal or higher in women.

Can vitamin D deficiency cause elevated alkaline phosphatase?

Elevated serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP) level is an essential marker for the diagnosis of vitamin D deficiency (1). Some cases of vitamin D deficiency are diagnosed accidentally on the basis of elevated ALP levels.

Is alkaline phosphatase a tumor marker?

Serum ALP was found to be a valuable tumor marker with high specificity in osteosarcoma.

What cancers cause elevated alkaline phosphatase?

Background: Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) is an enzyme that is elevated by various hepatobiliary diseases. Generally its elevation is thought to indicate bile stasis. There are some reports that show ALP is an important prognostic factor for several cancers such as colon, lung, and gastric cancer.

What is a normal alkaline phosphatase level by age?

For men and women older than age 18, an ALP level between 44 and 147 U/L is considered normal. The normal range for children is higher than that for adults, especially for infants and teens because their bones are growing rapidly.

When should I worry about Alt?

When ALT levels are very high, it may be a sign of an acute liver problem. Mild or moderate elevation, especially if it persists on several tests over time, can be an indicator of a chronic disease. However, the degree of elevation alone is not a reliable predictor of the extent of injury to the liver.

What medications cause high levels of alkaline phosphatase?

• Antibiotics: penicillin derivatives (1) ...
• Antiepileptic drugs: Carbamazepine. ...
• Antihistamines: Cetirizine (1)
• Cardiovascular drugs: Captopril (1) ...
• Disease modifying agents: ...
• Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons: ...
• Psychotropic drugs: ...
• Diabetes drugs:

Can osteoporosis cause elevated alkaline phosphatase?

Biver, et al. has also showed raised levels of bone alkaline phosphatase in osteoporotic patients compared to normal, and these high levels may be associated with prevalent vertebral fractures.

What is alkaline phosphatase normal range?

The normal range is 44 to 147 international units per liter (IU/L) or 0.73 to 2.45 microkatal per liter (µkat/L). Normal values may vary slightly from laboratory to laboratory. They also can vary with age and sex.

What does high ALT, AST and alkaline phosphatase levels?

Like ALT, AST is normally present in blood at low levels. An increase in AST levels may indicate liver damage, disease or muscle damage. Alkaline phosphatase (ALP). ALP is an enzyme found in the liver and bone and is important for breaking down proteins.

Can arthritis cause elevated alkaline phosphatase?

Increased concentration of serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP) is a common feature in rheumatoid arthritis (RA), although its origin remains unclear. The aim of this study is to analyze the origin and clinical significance of the elevated ALP value in RA.

Can osteoarthritis cause high alkaline phosphatase?

In this nationally representative cross-sectional study, we found that higher serum ALP levels were positively associated with the presence of radiologically confirmed symptomatic knee osteoarthritis in middle-aged and old adults.

Is Alpha 1 antitrypsin a tumor marker?

Conclusion: Alpha-1 antitrypsin is a suitable prognostic rather than early stages diagnostic tumor marker in SCCE as its correlation with the disease could significantly be seen in the advanced stages of the esophageal tumorigenesis.

Can vitamin D increase alkaline phosphatase?

The correlation coefficient of alkaline phosphatase and serum vitamin D3 levels was r =0.05 (p =0.593). Conclusion: Serum vitamin D3 levels may not be correlated with increased serum alkaline phosphatase levels. Therefore, alkaline phosphatase may not be used as a screening test to rule out vitamin D deficiency.

What causes sudden increase in alkaline phosphatase?

High ALP levels can be caused by bone diseases, such as Paget's disease, osteomalacia, rickets, bone tumors, or tumors that have spread from another part of the body to the bone, or by overactive parathyroid glands (hyperparathyroidism). Normal healing of a bone fracture can also raise ALP levels.

Why alkaline phosphatase test is done?

The purpose of testing alkaline phosphatase is to determine if you have normal levels of this enzyme. An ALP blood test can be used for screening, diagnosis, and monitoring of liver diseases and other health conditions. Screening is checking for health problems before any symptoms have occurred.

What is the treatment of high ALP?

A reduction in serum ALP was also seen in the euparathyroid subjects (2.4 +/- 0.77 to 2.2 +/- 0.64 mu kat/l, p = 0.03). This study indicates that treatment with active vitamin D is effective in reducing the increased bone turnover seen in subjects with both primary and secondary HPT.

What age group has the highest reference range for alkaline phosphatase?

Serum ALP levels were similar in boys and girls until age 10 years, but higher ALP levels were noted at ages 10-11 years in girls (median values were 572 and 525, respectively; p= 0.02) and in three age groups, namely 12-13, 14-15 and 16-17 years in boys (median values were 630 U/L, 518 U/L, 587 U/L, 251 U/L, 369U/L ...

What are the symptoms of hypophosphatasia?

• Short stature with bowed legs or knock knees.
• Decreased mobility.
• Skeletal malformations.
• Bone and joint pain.
• Enlarged wrist or ankle joints.
• Abnormal skull shape.
• Losing baby teeth earlier than usual.
