A contracture occurs when your muscles, tendons, joints, or other tissues tighten or shorten causing a deformity. Contracture symptoms include pain and loss of movement in the joint. If this occurs, you should seek treatment right away. Doctors can treat contractures with medicine, casts, and physical therapy.

When do contractures develop?

Soft tissue changes that contribute to contractures begin very early after the onset of immobility. Protein synthesis within muscle fibers is reduced within 6 hours after a joint is immobilized. Shortening of muscle fibers occurs within 24 hours.

Where do contractures occur?

Contractures mostly occur in the skin, the tissues underneath, and the muscles, tendons, and ligaments surrounding a joint. They affect range of motion and function in a certain body part. Often, there is also pain.

Why do contractures happen?

What is periarticular contracture?

Contractures are periarticular motion impairments that result from loss of elasticity in the periarticular tissues, which include muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Contractures can occur in any immobilized joint but are particularly prevalent in paretic limbs after a stroke.

What is Volkmann contracture?

Are contractures preventable?

Definition of Contractures

If not treated, it can lead to bony ankylosis of the joint. Contractures can range from minimal reductions in the ROM at a single joint to severe fixed limitations in movement at multiple joints. As a result, they impair physical functioning. 8 Often, however, they are preventable.

How is contracture diagnosed?

In most cases, doctors can diagnose Dupuytren's contracture by the look and feel of your hands. Other tests are rarely necessary. Your doctor will compare your hands to each other and check for puckering on the skin of your palms.

What is Hypomobile?

Hypomobile joints are joints that are too tight and cause a decreased range of motion. The opposite of hypermobility, hypomobility is when your ligaments are too short or tight, inhibiting your ability to stretch normally.

Does stretching help Dupuytren's?
