4. When dissecting a specimen, Barry noticed that the arteries are thicker and more elastic than the veins. Why are the arteries different from the veins? Arteries are thicker and more elastic than veins because they are under greater pressure.

When dissecting a specimen Debbie noticed that the arteries were thicker and more elastic than the veins Why?

When dissecting a specimen, Barry noticed that the arteries were thicker and more elastic than the veins. Why? Arteries are under greater pressure. Elizabeth takes a prescription drug that dilates her arterioles.

When fluid is leaving a capillary and entering the tissue which of the following is true?

If fluid is leaving a capillary and entering the tissue, which of the following statements is true? Blood pressure is higher than osmotic pressure. Tissue fluid leaving the arterial end of the capillary is balanced by tissue fluid entering the venous end of the capillary.

Are almost all capillaries open at the same time?

Almost all capillaries are open at the same time. The only site of nutrient, gas exchange, and waste exchange is the capillaries. Pre-capillary sphincters contract to increase capillary flow. ... The only site of nutrient, gas exchange, and waste exchange is the capillaries.

Which body system will return excess tissue fluid to the cardiovascular system?

The lymphatic system collects excess fluid that drains from cells and tissue throughout the body and returns it to the bloodstream, which is then recirculated through the body.

What will happen if interstitial fluid fails to return to the circulatory system?

The maintenance of the interstitial milieu is one of its vital functions; if fluid is not returned to the blood system at the same rate as it leaves, the painful and debilitating condition of œdema can develop. Also scavenged are particles, viruses and bacteria.

What causes the accumulation of fluids in tissues and how does this fluid become lymph?

Lymph is a fluid that circulates throughout the body in the lymphatic system. It forms when tissue fluids/blood plasma (mostly water, with proteins and other dissolved substances) drain into the lymphatic system. It contains a high number of lymphocytes (white cells that fight infection).

When dissecting a specimen Barry noticed that the arteries were thicker and more elastic than the veins?

4. When dissecting a specimen, Barry noticed that the arteries are thicker and more elastic than the veins. Why are the arteries different from the veins? Arteries are thicker and more elastic than veins because they are under greater pressure.

Why does blood flow slower in capillaries?

As the total cross-sectional area of the vessels increases, the velocity of flow decreases. Blood flow is slowest in the capillaries, which allows time for exchange of gases and nutrients. ... As vessel diameter decreases, the resistance increases and blood flow decreases.

Why does blood move slowly in the capillaries in comparison to arterioles?

Why does blood move slower in the capillaries compared to the arterioles? Capillaries are much wider than arterioles. Blood pressure is much higher in capillaries than in arterioles. ... *There are many more capillaries than arterioles and the increase in cross-sectional area causes a decrease in blood flow.

Why do fluids leave the capillaries at the arterial end?

The fluids leave the capillaries at the arterial end because... the net filtration pressure of the blood is higher at the arterial end than it is at the venous end. the net filtration pressure of the blood is higher at the venous end than it is at the arterial end.

What causes fluid to leave the capillaries?

Explanation: Fluid movement into and out of capillaries is mainly dependent on two forces: hydrostatic pressure and osmotic pressure. Hydrostatic pressure is determined by fluid volume and the pressure of the fluid against the capillary walls.

What causes the fluid to move across the capillary membrane?

The primary force driving fluid transport between the capillaries and tissues is hydrostatic pressure, which can be defined as the pressure of any fluid enclosed in a space. ... Thus, fluid generally moves out of the capillary and into the interstitial fluid. This process is called filtration.

What is thickening of the arteries?

Atherosclerosis is thickening of the walls of the arteries. It is also known as hardening of the arteries. It is caused by a buildup of plaque in the inner lining of an artery. Plaque is made up of deposits of fatty substances, cholesterol, cellular waste products, calcium, and fibrin.

What is the ballooning of a blood vessel called?

An aneurysm is an abnormal bulge or ballooning of an artery, caused by weakening of the artery wall.

What is the name of the thick membranous sac that surrounds and protects the heart quizlet?

*The pericardium is a thick, membranous sac that surrounds and protects the heart.

What is the primary cause of the low velocity of blood flow in capillaries?

What is the primary cause of the low velocity of blood in the capillaries? The primary cause of the low velocity is the extensive branching of the capillary beds and the huge amount of cross-sectional area presented by this system.

How does vessel length affect blood flow?

Vessel Length and Diameter

The length of a vessel is directly proportional to its resistance: the longer the vessel, the greater the resistance and the lower the flow. As with blood volume, this makes intuitive sense, since the increased surface area of the vessel will impede the flow of blood.

Why is the velocity of blood lowest in the capillaries Reddit?

Explanation Summary: Since there are far more capillaries in the body, summing all of their cross sectional area this total is larger than the total for any other type of vessel, causing the velocity of the blood to decrease.

Which blood vessel type would you expect to have the thickest smooth muscle layer?

Tunica Media

It is generally the thickest layer in arteries, and it is much thicker in arteries than it is in veins. The tunica media consists of layers of smooth muscle supported by connective tissue that is primarily made up of elastic fibers, most of which are arranged in circular sheets.

When plaques build up on walls in the inside of blood vessels the condition is called a an?

Atherosclerosis, sometimes called "hardening of the arteries," occurs when fat (cholesterol) and calcium build up inside the lining of the artery wall, forming a substance called plaque. Over time, the fat and calcium buildup narrows the artery and blocks blood flow through it.

What arteries are also called distributing arteries?

A muscular artery (or distributing artery) is a medium-sized artery that draws blood from an elastic artery and branches into "resistance vessels" including small arteries and arterioles.

Which statement correctly describes the origin of lymph fluid quizlet?

Terms in this set (12) Which statement correctly describes the origin of lymph fluid? -Lymph is collected from fluid that accumulates in veins as blood slowly circulates back toward the heart. -Lymph is fluid collected from arteriovenous anastomoses.

Which of the following is the correct pathway of lymph?

Lymph flows from lymphatic vessels into lymphatic trunks , and finally into collecting ducts where the lymph is disposed into the subclavian veins.

How is lymph moved around the body?

LYMPHATIC CIRCULATION

The lymph is moved through the body in its own vessels making a one-way journey from the interstitial spaces to the subclavian veins at the base of the neck. Since the lymphatic system does not have a heart to pump it, its upward movement depends on the motions of the muscle and joint pumps.
