After infection with the COVID-19 virus, it can take two to three weeks to develop enough antibodies to be detected in an antibody test, so it's important that you're not tested too soon. Antibodies may be detected in your blood for several months or more after you recover from COVID-19 .

Does an antibody test diagnose an active COVID-19?

Antibodies can take several days or weeks to develop after you have an infection and may stay in your blood for several weeks after recovery. Because of this, antibody tests should not be used to diagnose an active coronavirus infection.

What is the purpose of COVID-19 antibody or serology tests?

SARS-CoV-2 antibody or serology tests look for antibodies in a blood sample to determine if an individual has had a past infection with the virus that causes COVID-19. These types of tests cannot be used to diagnose a current infection.

How long does it take for the body to produce antibodies against COVID-19?

Antibodies can take days or weeks to develop in the body following exposure to a SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) infection and it is unknown how long they stay in the blood.

Is it recommended to take antibody tests after receiving the COVID-19 vaccine?

FDA reminds the public and health care providers that results from currently authorized SARS-CoV-2 antibody tests should not be used to evaluate a person’s level of immunity from COVID-19 at any time, and especially after the person received a COVID-19 vaccination.

Should you get the covid-19 vaccine if you have been treated with monoclonal antibodies?

If you were treated for COVID-19 with monoclonal antibodies or convalescent plasma, you should wait 90 days before getting a COVID-19 vaccine.

What does a positive COVID-19 antibody test result mean?

A positive test result with the SARS-CoV-2 antibody test indicates that antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 were detected, and the individual has potentially been exposed to COVID-19.

What is the COVID-19 antibody test?

An antibody test looks for antibodies that are made by the immune system in response to a threat, such as a specific virus. Antibodies can help fight infections. Antibodies can take several days or weeks to develop after you have an infection and may stay in your blood for several weeks after recovery. Because of this, antibody tests should not be used to diagnose an active coronavirus infection. At this time, researchers do not know if the presence of antibodies means that you are immune to the coronavirus in the future.

Does a positive antibody test mean I am immune to the coronavirus disease?

A positive antibody test does not necessarily mean you are immune from SARS-CoV-2 infection, as it is not known whether having antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 will protect you from getting infected again.

How does the body develop immunity to COVID-19?

Once you've been exposed to a virus, your body makes memory cells. If you're exposed to that same virus again, these cells recognize it. They tell your immune system to make antibodies against it.

Can COVID-19 antibody tests be used to assess for immunity to COVID-19?

• Antibody testing is not currently recommended to assess for immunity to SARS-CoV-2 following COVID-19 vaccination, to assess the need for vaccination in an unvaccinated person, or to determine the need to quarantine after a close contact with someone who has COVID-19.

What does a negative SARS-CoV-2 antibody test mean?

A negative result on a SARS-CoV-2 antibody test means antibodies to the virus were not detected in your sample. It could mean:
• You have not been infected with COVID-19 previously.
• You had COVID-19 in the past but you did not develop or have not yet developed detectable antibodies.

What does an antibody test tell you?

Antibodies are detected in the blood of people who have been previously infected with or vaccinated against a virus that causes a disease; they show the body's efforts (past infection) or preparedness (past infection or vaccination) to fight off a specific virus.

Are there different types of COVID-19 diagnostic tests?

There are 2 different types of COVID-19 diagnostic tests -- molecular tests and antigen tests. Molecular tests detect the virus that causes COVID-19, SARS-CoV-2. Antigen tests detect specific proteins made by the virus.

What does the detection of Covid -19 antibodies in my body mean?

When antibodies are found (a positive test result), it may mean that a person was infected with SARS-CoV-2 and their body’s immune system responded to the virus at some point in the past. People develop antibodies when their body’s immune system responds to an infection. These antibodies can be found in the blood of people previously infected whether or not they had signs or symptoms of illness.

What is the difference between a COVID-19 swab test and an antibody blood test?

A swab or spit test can tell only if you have the virus in your body at that moment. But a blood test shows whether you've ever been infected with the virus, even if you didn't have symptoms.

What does it mean if I tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 antibodies?

If you test positive for SARS-CoV-2 antibodies, it probably means you've had the virus. It's also possible to get a “false positive” if you have antibodies but had a different kind of coronavirus. A positive result might mean you have some immunity to the coronavirus.

How long after getting infected will COVID-19 antibodies show up in the test?

An antibody test may not show if you have a current infection because it can take 1–3 weeks after the infection for your body to make antibodies.

What should be done if the COVID-19 antigen test result is positive?

In a community setting, when testing a person who has symptoms compatible with COVID-19, the healthcare provider generally can interpret a positive antigen test to indicate that the person is infected with SARS-CoV-2; this person should follow CDC's guidance for isolation. However, if the person who has received a positive antigen test result is fully vaccinated, the healthcare provider should inform the public health authorities. Ideally, a separate specimen would be collected and sent to a laboratory for viral sequencing for public health purposes.

Where can I get an antibody or a diagnostic test for COVID-19?

Antibody and diagnostic tests are available by prescription from a health care provider and may be available at local health care facilities and testing centers. Contact your health care provider or your local or state health department for more information.

What is the false negative rate from COVID-19 antibody test results?

The reported rate of false negatives is 20%. However, the range of false negatives is from 0% to 30% depending on the study and when in the course of infection the test is performed.

What is the COVID-19 Self-Collected Antibody Test System?

The COVID-19 Self-Collected Antibody Test System is authorized for prescription use with a fingerstick dried blood sample that is self-collected by an individual age 18 years or older or collected by an adult from an individual 5 years of age and older. The test is intended to aid in identifying individuals with an adaptive immune response to SARS-CoV-2, indicating recent or prior infection. The COVID-19 Self-Collected Antibody Test System should not be used to diagnose or exclude acute SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Can you test positive for COVID-19 antibodies if you have no symptoms?

• You may test positive for antibodies even if you have never had symptoms of COVID-19 or have not yet received a COVID-19 vaccine. This can happen if you had an infection without symptoms, which is called an asymptomatic infection.

Can I get the COVID-19 vaccine if I was treated with monoclonal antibodies or convalescent plasma?

If you were treated for COVID-19 symptoms with monoclonal antibodies or convalescent plasma, you should wait 90 days before getting a COVID-19 vaccine.

Who should not get the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine?

If you have had a severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) or an immediate allergic reaction, even if it was not severe, to any ingredient in an mRNA COVID-19 vaccine (such as polyethylene glycol), you should not get an mRNA COVID-19 vaccine.
