The primary difference between a strut and shock is in the design of the individual suspension system. ... Struts are used on vehicles without an upper control arm and connect to the knuckle while vehicles with an upper and lower control arm (independent suspension) or a solid axle (on the rear) use shock absorbers.

Is a shock absorber the same as a strut?

Even though they do the same thing, shocks and struts are completely different parts. A shock cannot be used to replace a strut and a strut cannot be used to replace a shock. ... The major difference between shocks and struts is that a strut is a structural part of the vehicles suspension system where a shock is not.

Do I need shocks and struts or just shocks?

Cars need regular replacement of shocks or struts every 50,000 miles or so, depending on your car's make and model. Have your mechanic make a routine check of the shocks or struts every 50,000 miles, or however often your operating manual recommends it.

Should I replace struts or shocks first?

Shocks and struts should always be replaced at the same time. Unlike some steering and suspension components, the left and right shocks/struts tend to wear down at the same rate. If the left shock or strut is damaged, there's a good chance the right side also needs to be replaced.

How do I know if my car has shocks or struts?

Rather than looking for coil springs on these parts to tell them apart, look at the bottom portion of the absorber. If it is held in place by only one bolt, you'll know you have shocks and not struts. You'll also know you have a shock if your vehicle has an upper control arm.

Difference between Shocks and Struts

Which is better shocks or struts?

Well, shock absorbers usually give you better handling, while struts give you a lower initial cost for the vehicle. Now if you want to check these, and they should be checked on a regular basis, you're going to do two things; number one you're going to bounce the vehicle up and down, and you do that over each wheel.

What happens if shocks are bad?

Other signs of car shocks and struts in bad condition are unusual noises over bumps, excessive body lean or sway in turns, or that the front end of the vehicle dives sharply in hard braking. Bad shocks also can affect steering control and cause uneven tire wear. ... Carrying heavy loads also will wear out shocks faster.

Should I replace all 4 shocks at the same time?

Shocks and struts should always be replaced in pairs (front axle or rear axle), and it's even better to replace the shocks/struts on all four wheels at one time. This helps maintain reliable handling and a consistent response on both sides of the vehicle.

How much do struts cost to fix?

On average, expect to pay somewhere between $450 and $900 to replace a pair of struts. An individual strut assembly will cost about $150 to $300 so you're looking at around $300 to $600 for parts alone. Labor alone will set you back about $150 to $300 for the pair.

Can you just replace shocks?

It's not necessary, but it's usually recommended to replace them in pairs, for example, both front struts or both rear shocks. This is because a new shock absorber will absorb road bumps better than the old one.

Are struts worth replacing?

Struts don't need to be replaced unless your vehicle is bouncing like it's on a pogo stick or bottoms out in potholes and over railroad tracks — or unless a mechanic finds that they're leaking fluid or have been damaged. In some climates, they can also rust.

Can you have both shocks and struts?

First of all, it is important to note that not all vehicles have both shocks and struts. Some have just struts and some vehicles have only shocks. Shocks are part of the overall suspension, and a strut is a complete suspension assembly. The shocks and/or struts in your car perform two functions.

What happens if a strut breaks while driving?

It needs to be repaired as soon as possible. A strut works by absorbing the bounce of your car driving over bumps in the road. ... Driving with a broken strut will be extremely uncomfortable for you and your passengers, and is unsafe in an emergency. It can also damage other components in your car.

What noise does a bad strut make?

Bad strut sounds are usually described as a hollow clunking or banging type of sound. You'll typically hear the noise when the vehicle is traveling over irregularities in the road. Most front strut assemblies also have a bearing at the top.

Can I drive with bad struts?

Driving with worn shocks or struts can result in more than just a bad ride—there are safety implications to consider. “Most drivers don't realize that driving with bad shocks or struts can actually increase your stopping distances, especially on wet or slippery roads,” says Jill Trotta, Senior Director at RepairPal.

What happens if you don't replace your struts?

Safety: Worn struts result in longer stopping times and/or distances as the vehicle weight can shift (sometimes unexpectedly) during braking. ... Wear on other parts: Driving with bad struts accelerates the wear on tires, as well as other components of the suspension system, such as the springs.

Can you drive with bad shocks?

If your shocks and struts go bad, you shouldn't drive your car for long. Driving with bad shocks and struts is a safety risk because the stability of your vehicle is compromised. You will experience poor handling, excessive body roll, a wobbly steering wheel, and poor traction.

How long do struts last on a car?

So how long do shocks and struts last? On average shocks and struts can last 5-10 years or 50,000-100,000 miles under ideal driving conditions. Many factors can affect the lifespan of these components to include: manufacturer, bad roads, heavy loads, towing, hard braking and aggressive driving.

How much does it cost to replace all 4 struts?

A typical shock and strut replacement can set you back anywhere between $450 and $1,100 on parts and labor combined. An individual shock and strut assembly costs around $150 to $900, while estimated labor costs for replacing a shock and strut assembly can range anywhere from $150 to $300 per assembly.

Can you run shocks front and rear?

Yes, you can use two different shocks on your car or truck, as long as you follow a couple simple rules: ... As long as you have a reason for installing different shocks front and rear you can do so safely. Never Install Used Shocks - You should never install used shocks on your car or truck.

Can I replace struts myself?

Strut Replacement

Replacing struts used to be a dangerous job for a DIYer. ... But these days you can buy a complete strut assembly that eliminates the strut/spring/mount disassembly process. These assemblies allow you to replace both of your front struts yourself in less than two hours.

How long do shocks last?

On average, if your car has been “babied,” you can expect your shocks/struts to last about 10 years. If you have really used your car like a workhorse, 5 years is probably all you can expect. This means that for the average driver, 7 or 8 years is the maximum life expectancy of most shocks and struts.

How do you tell if struts are leaking?

When your vehicle's front struts are leaking, it's a telltale sign of suspension issues.
...
That's why it's important to be aware of the following warning signs to let you know when your front struts are leaking:

1. Vibrating steering wheel.
2. Increased tire tread wear.
3. Front end of the vehicle dips when braking.

What can bad struts do to your car?

When your shocks and struts are worn, your car will take longer to stop than it would without worn components. Your anti-lock braking system could also be affected and work less efficiently. The risk increases even more on rough or bumpy roads because of the increased up and down movement of the wheels.

How important are struts in a car?

Struts are important to overall vehicle operation because they are integral to both the suspension and the steering systems. In addition to general ride quality and load-bearing support, they impact brake performance, wheel alignment, and turning ability.
