DNA is a linear molecule composed of four types of smaller chemical molecules called nucleotide bases: adenine (A), cytosine (C), guanine (G), and thymine (T). The order of these bases is called the DNA sequence.

What are the 3 main components that make up DNA?

In turn, each nucleotide is itself made up of three primary components: a nitrogen-containing region known as a nitrogenous base, a carbon-based sugar molecule called deoxyribose, and a phosphorus-containing region known as a phosphate group attached to the sugar molecule (Figure 1).

What exactly is DNA?

Deoxyribonucleic acid, more commonly known as DNA, is a complex molecule that contains all of the information necessary to build and maintain an organism. All living things have DNA within their cells. ... In other words, whenever organisms reproduce, a portion of their DNA is passed along to their offspring.

Can 2 people have the same DNA?

The possibility of having a secret DNA sharing twin is pretty low. Your DNA is arranged into chromosomes, which are grouped into 23 pairs. ... Theoretically, same-sex siblings could be created with the same selection of chromosomes, but the odds of this happening would be one in 246 or about 70 trillion.

How does DNA get created?

DNA is made of chemical building blocks called nucleotides. These building blocks are made of three parts: a phosphate group, a sugar group and one of four types of nitrogen bases. To form a strand of DNA, nucleotides are linked into chains, with the phosphate and sugar groups alternating.

This Is How Your DNA Made You

What are the 4 types of DNA?

Because there are four naturally occurring nitrogenous bases, there are four different types of DNA nucleotides: adenine (A), thymine (T), guanine (G), and cytosine (C).

What are the 6 components of DNA?

(The Double Helix)

DNA is made up of six smaller molecules -- a five carbon sugar called deoxyribose, a phosphate molecule and four different nitrogenous bases (adenine, thymine, cytosine and guanine).

Is DNA A polymer?

The proteins we eat, and which we're made of, are polymers made up of amino acids. And even our DNA is a polymer—it's made of monomers called nucleotides.

Is DNA made of carbon?

The letters DNA are short for Deoxy-riboNucleic Acid. ... A single basic unit or "building block" of DNA consists of a sugar , a phosphate group and a base. Sugars are rings of carbon and oxygen atoms. The sugar in DNA has 5 carbon atoms (labelled 1' - 5'), and is called deoxy-ribose (hence the "Deoxy-ribo" in DNA).

What monomer makes up DNA?

The monomers of DNA are called nucleotides. Nucleotides have three components: a base, a sugar (deoxyribose) and a phosphate residue. The four bases are adenine (A), cytosine (C), guanine (G) and thymine (T).

Why is DNA an acid?

Explanation: More specifically, this acidity comes from the phosphate groups used in forming DNA and RNA molecules. These phosphate groups are quite similar to phosphoric acid. ... That easily-lost proton is what causes nucleic acids to be so acidic.

What are the 3 main functions of DNA?

DNA now has three distinct functions—genetics, immunological, and structural—that are widely disparate and variously dependent on the sugar phosphate backbone and the bases.

Do chromosomes make up DNA?

Each chromosome is made up of DNA tightly coiled many times around proteins called histones that support its structure. Chromosomes are not visible in the cell's nucleus—not even under a microscope—when the cell is not dividing. ... DNA and histone proteins are packaged into structures called chromosomes.

What are the 5 levels of DNA structure?

Nucleic acid structure is often divided into four different levels: primary, secondary, tertiary, and quaternary.

What are 5 facts about DNA?

• Your DNA could stretch from the earth to the sun and back ~600 times. ...
• We're all 99.9 percent alike. ...
• Genes make up only about 3 percent of your DNA. ...
• A DNA test can reveal you're more Irish than your siblings. ...
• The human genome contains 3 billion base pairs of DNA.

What is the sugar in DNA?

The sugar in deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) is deoxyribose. The deoxy prefix indicates that the 2′ carbon atom of the sugar lacks the oxygen atom that is linked to the 2′ carbon atom of ribose (the sugar in ribonucleic acid, or RNA), as shown in Figure 5.2.

What is DNA and RNA?

The two main types of nucleic acids are DNA and RNA. Both DNA and RNA are made from nucleotides, each containing a five-carbon sugar backbone, a phosphate group, and a nitrogen base. DNA provides the code for the cell's activities, while RNA converts that code into proteins to carry out cellular functions.

Are genes made of DNA?

A gene is the basic physical and functional unit of heredity. Genes are made up of DNA. ... However, many genes do not code for proteins. In humans, genes vary in size from a few hundred DNA bases to more than 2 million bases.

What are the 23 human chromosomes?

Humans have 23 pairs of chromosomes--22 pairs of numbered chromosomes, called autosomes, and one pair of sex chromosomes, X and Y. Each parent contributes one chromosome to each pair so that offspring get half of their chromosomes from their mother and half from their father.

What is DNA made of quizlet?

DNA is made up of two strands of nucleotides. The nucleotides are made up of a sugar (deoxyribose in DNA), a phosphate, and a nitrogen base. The sugars and phosphates make up the "handrails" (or "backbone"), and are held together by covalent bonds.

What does DNA tell about a person?

The simplest thing DNA can tell you is whether someone is male or female. Apart from some very rare cases, that doesn't even involve looking at their DNA sequence - all you need to know is whether they have X and Y chromosomes (making them male) or a pair of Xs (which makes them female).

How is DNA used in real life?

It's used as evidence in courts, to identify bodies, track down blood relatives, and to look for cures for disease.

Do DNA viruses exist?

DNA viruses are ubiquitous worldwide, especially in marine environments where they form an important part of marine ecosystems, and infect both prokaryotes and eukaryotes.

Does DNA dissolve in water?

These molecules are also polar because of the negatively charged phosphate group (PO₃^-) along the sugar-phosophate backbone. Because of this, DNA and RNA can easily dissolve in water.
