Many people wonder how the older mechanical (or thermal) turn signal flasher works. They are mechanical switches that switch power to the turn signal bulbs using a bi-metallic strip of metal and a heater. These are called thermal flashers because they relay on a heater and a bi-metallic strip to operate.

How do you test a thermal flasher?

To test the conventional type of flasher unit, use a circuit tester between the terminal marked B on the unit and the earth. Turn on the ignition . If the supply side of the unit is working, the bulb should light. If it does not, look for a break in the wiring between the unit and the fuse box.

Are all flasher relays the same?

They come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and designs, which will vary according to the specific needs of the vehicle. When current is applied to the relay the circuit inside cuts on and off, which results in the clicking sound of the relay, as well as the flashing of the turn signal or hazard lights.

How do LED flashers work?

The circuit for blinking an LED using transistors is called an Astable Multivibrator. ... The two capacitors C1 and C2 will alternate between being charged and discharged and thereby turning the transistors ON and OFF. When a transistor is ON it allows current to flow through it so that the LED above it will light up.

Do you need two flasher relays?

You also only need one LED Flasher Relay per bike, so unlike Resistors that could require up to 4 resistors if you were changing the front and rear turns signals to LED, the LED Flasher Relay method only requires one, and works with a total LED signal swap or a mix of LED and incandescent bulbs.

Why do my hazard lights work but my turn signals don t?

When your hazard lights don't illuminate but the turn signals work, usually you are dealing with a faulty hazard-lights flasher. However, if the flasher unit is working fine, check the fuse. ... Finally, check for an electrical open or a short circuit in the wiring that connects to the external lights.
