A column of nerve tissue that runs from the base of the skull down the center of the back. It is covered by three thin layers of protective tissue called membranes. The spinal cord and membranes are surrounded by the vertebrae (back bones).

What is the spinal cord?

The spinal cord is a long, thin, tubular structure made up of nervous tissue, which extends from the medulla oblongata in the brainstem to the lumbar region of the vertebral column. It encloses the central canal of the spinal cord, which contains cerebrospinal fluid.

What is spinal cord What is its function?

The brain and spinal cord are your body's central nervous system. The brain is the command center for your body, and the spinal cord is the pathway for messages sent by the brain to the body and from the body to the brain.

What Is spinal cord answer?

The spinal cord is a long bundle of nerves and cells that extends from the lower portion of the brain to the lower back. It carries signals between the brain and the rest of the body.

What's in your spinal cord?

The spinal cord lies inside the spinal column, which is made up of 33 bones called vertebrae. Five vertebrae are fused together to form the sacrum (part of the pelvis), and four small vertebrae are fused together to form the coccyx (tailbone).

What is a spinal cord injury?

Can you live without a spine?

Your spine serves many important functions, including connecting your brain to other parts of your body and providing structural support. You can't live without a spine. Some conditions, such as SCI and spina bifida, can affect the spinal cord, leading to symptoms like partial or complete loss of movement or sensation.

What bones protect the spinal cord?

Vertebrae. The individual bones of the spine are the vertebrae. These are the building blocks of the spinal column. The vertebrae protect and support the spinal cord.

What is spinal cord Class 10?

The spinal cord is a complex cylinder of nerves that starts at the base of your brain and runs down the vertebral canal to the backbone. It is part of the body's collection of nerves, called the central nervous system, along with the brain.

Where is your spinal cord?

Spinal cord and nerves: The spinal cord is a column of nerves that travels through the spinal canal. The cord extends from the skull to the lower back. Thirty-one pairs of nerves branch out through vertebral openings (the neural foramen). These nerves carry messages between the brain and muscles.

What is difference between spine and spinal cord?

The spine is made up of a column of bones called vertebrae (spinal column). The spinal cord, a long, fragile structure contained in the spinal canal which runs through the centre of the spine, is protected by the vertebrae.

What happens if your spinal cord is damaged?

Injuries to the spinal cord can cause weakness or complete loss of muscle function and loss of sensation in the body below the level of injury, loss of control of the bowels and bladder, and loss of normal sexual function.

Why is the spinal cord so important?

The spinal cord controls various parts of the body and plays an important role when it comes to bladder control. The spinal cord forms a vital link between the brain and the rest of the body and is part of the central nervous system. Together with the brain it controls bodily functions, including movement and behavior.

What are the two main functions of spinal cord?

• To conduct reflexes below the neck.
• To conduct messages from the skin and muscles to the brain.
• To conduct commands from the brain to muscles of the trunk and limbs.

How many spinal cords are there?

The spinal cord is located in the vertebral foramen and is made up of 31 segments: 8 cervical, 12 thoracic, 5 lumbar, 5 sacral and 1 coccygeal. A pair of spinal nerves leaves each segment of the spinal cord. The length of the spinal cord is about 45 cm in men and 43 cm in women.

How far does your spinal cord go?

The spinal cord extends from the foramen magnum where it is continuous with the medulla to the level of the first or second lumbar vertebrae. It is a vital link between the brain and the body, and from the body to the brain. The spinal cord is 40 to 50 cm long and 1 cm to 1.5 cm in diameter.

What causes pain in the spine?

Upper and middle back pain may be caused by: Overuse, muscle strain, or injury to the muscles, ligaments, and discs that support your spine. Poor posture. Pressure on the spinal nerves from certain problems, such as a herniated disc.

What is spinal cord Class 11?

The spinal cord is a feature of the central nervous system. It is a long pipe-like structure created by the medulla oblongata, part of the brain composed of a series of nerve fibres, which passes along the spinal column of the spine.

What is spinal cord Class 5?

Spinal cord: The major column of nerve tissue that is connected to the brain and lies within the vertebral canal and from which the spinal nerves emerge. Thirty-one pairs of spinal nerves originate in the spinal cord: 8 cervical, 12 thoracic, 5 lumbar, 5 sacral, and 1 coccygeal.

What are the two main functions of the spinal cord Class 11?

The functions of the spinal cord are: - It acts as a connecting link between the body (peripheral nervous system PNS) and the brain. - It provides a relay path for the impulses coming from the brain. - It is responsible for the conduction of the reflex action.

What bones protect brain?

Cranium. The eight bones that protect the brain are called the cranium. The front bone forms the forehead. Two parietal bones form the upper sides of the skull, while two temporal bones form the lower sides.

Which bones protect your heart?

The ribs are connected to the sternum with a strong, somewhat flexible material called cartilage. The rib cage help protects the organs in the chest, such as the heart and lungs, from damage.

Is spinal cord injury a disability?

Anyone with a spinal cord injury can file a claim for Social Security disability benefits as long as the injury has lasted at least three months and is expected to make it impossible for you to work for at least 12 months.

Does everyone have a spine?

However, the spine is actually far more complex than many people realize. While we all have spines, many of us do not know some of the most basic facts about our spines and our overall spinal health. Here are the top ten facts that every person should know about the spine. The spine has a ton of working parts.

Can you have part of your spine removed?

Laminectomy is a type of surgery in which a surgeon removes part or all of the vertebral bone (lamina). This helps ease pressure on the spinal cord or the nerve roots that may be caused by injury, herniated disk, narrowing of the canal (spinal stenosis), or tumors.
