Compensating filters are shaped filters used to balance densities on an image when the part difference is large from one end to the other (i.e. foot).

What is an example of a compensating filter?

Fig. 2-3 Examples of compensating filters in use today. A, Supertech wedge, collimator-mounted Clear Pb filter used for AP projection of hips, knees, and ankles on long (51-inch) film. B, Trough, collimator-mounted aluminum filter with double wedge used for AP projections of thoracic spine.

How should the compensating filter be placed?

1. a wedge-shaped filter affixed to the collimator of the x-ray tube.
2. the thicker portion of the wedge is placed in the primary beam which passes through the less dense parts of the anatomy being imaged.
3. common uses. horizontal beam hips, the thick portion of the wedge over the distal aspect of the femur.

What are compensating filters made of?

CLEAR-Pb^® Compensation Filters are made of a lead-plastic material that is 30% lead by weight. Since lead is an efficient absorber of x-rays, the filters will attenuate the x-ray beam.

What are the two most common compensating filters?

The two most common compensating filters are the wedge filter and the trough filter.

Compensating Filters

Why is a compensating filter such as the boomerang filter helpful in Radiographing the shoulder?

The first compensating filter used next to the patient. Avoid overexposure of subtle peripheral lesions. Opaque chain incorporated at the periphery, always beyond the skin. Adheres vertically with every little pressure.

What is the purpose of a compensating filter quizlet?

Filters composed of clear leaded plastic block the field light. Filters are specifically designed to be used with only one body part or radiographic examination. Pediatric patients rarely require the use of compensating filters. Collimator-mounted filters reduce patient exposure by hardening the primary beam.

What are three types of compensating filters used in DSA?

• boomerang filter. shaped like the indigenous Australian boomerang. ...
• trough filter. channel shaped filter used during chest radiographs. ...
• wedge filter. a wedge-shaped filter affixed to the collimator of the x-ray tube.

What is a wedge filter used for?

A filter used in radiography and radiation therapy to vary the intensity of the x-ray beam. This compensates for differences in the thicknesses of the parts being exposed to radiation.

What is heel effect in radiology?

Anode heel effect refers to the lower field intensity towards the anode in comparison to the cathode due to lower x-ray emissions from the target material at angles perpendicular to the electron beam.

What is the importance of filtration in radiology?

Filtration is required to absorb the lower-energy x-ray photons emitted by the tube before they reach the target. The use of filters produce a cleaner image by absorbing the lower energy x-ray photons that tend to scatter more.

What is a filter used in radiology?

Filters are metal sheets placed in the x-ray beam between the window and the patient that are used to attenuate the low-energy (soft) x-ray photons from the spectrum.

What is bow tie filter?

A pre-patient attenuator (“bowtie filter” or “bowtie”) is used to modulate an incoming x-ray beam as a function of the angle of the x-ray with respect to a patient to balance the photon flux on a detector array.

What is trough filter?

Trough filters deliver another stage of metal filtration prior to casting. Trough filters are in-line filtration devices, usually used between metal holding and casting.

What is grid in radiography?

Grids are placed between the patient and the x-ray film to reduce the scattered radiation reaching the detector (produced mainly by the Compton effect) and thus improve image contrast.

Why is wedge used in radiotherapy?

In radiation therapy, wedge filters are commonly used to improve dose uniformity toward the target volume [2]. A physical wedge is usually constructed from a high-density material, such as lead or steel, which attenuates the beam progressively across the entire field.

What are wedge filters made of?

The most common form of compensator is the wedge filter. These wedges are normally constructed of brass, steel, or lead. When placed in the beam, they cause the isodose curves to be angled relative to the central axis.

What is dynamic wedge?

Modern medical accelerators are usually equipped with a dynamic wedge option. It is a form of dose-rate modulation which makes use of the dynamic movement pairs of collimator jaws. Dynamic wedges may replace physical wedges but their use requires more complex dosimetry and quality control procedures.

How much radiation do you get from fluoroscopy?

Getting a fluoroscopic procedure exposes a patient to as much radiation as 250 to 3,500 chest X-rays. For perspective, a person gets the equivalent of one chest X-ray from normal background radiation in about two and a half days.

Does fluoroscopy require contrast?

One common fluoroscopy exam involves a barium (or contrast) swallow, which passes through the GI tract and allows doctors to see the GI movements in even greater detail.

What is the advantage of fluoroscopy?

What are the benefits and risks of fluoroscopy? Medical imaging tests such as fluoroscopy are non-invasive procedures that allow doctors to diagnose diseases and injuries. These tests can help doctors: Obtain a better view of organs, blood vessels, tissues and bones.

What is the most simplest compensating filter?

between the X-ray tube and skin surface. The simplest and most common shape of compensating filter is the: a. wedge.

What does referring to projections axial mean?

Axial projection. Any angle of the CR of 10 degrees or more along the long axis of the body or body part. Tangential projection. touching a curve or surface at only one point. Skim a body part.
