The effect of PTU injections on the normal rat was to decrease the BMR. The palpable goiter was due to the buildup of the precursors to thyroxine. What was the effect of PTU injections on the thyroidectomized rat's BMR?

What was the effect of the propylthiouracil PTU on the normal rat?

Propylthiouracil reduced growth rate in young rats and caused weight loss in adult rats. The latter effect appeared to be true tissue loss because water contents of heart, kidney, testes, liver, psoas, aorta and adrenal were unaffected.

What was the effect of PTU on the surgically altered rats?

What was the effect of PTU injections on the normal rat's BMR? It slowed the metabolic rate, compared to normal baseline.

What was the effect of PTU injection?

PTU inhibits iodine and peroxidase from their normal interactions with thyroglobulin to form T4 and T3. This action decreases production of thyroid hormone. PTU also interferes with the conversion of T4 to T3, and, since T3 is more potent than T4, this also reduces the activity of thyroid hormones.

What was the effect of TSH on the Thyroidectomized rat's metabolic rate?

The thyroidectomized rate had no thyroid gland for TSH to stimulate, so in this case TSH injections could not increase thyroid hormone production and thus could not increase metabolic rate.

PROPYLTHIOURACIL (PTU)

What was the effect of PTU injections on the Thyroidectomized rat BMR How does the BMR in this case compare with the normal rat's BMR Why was this effect observed?

The effect of PTU injections on the normal rat was to decrease the BMR. The palpable goiter was due to the buildup of the precursors to thyroxine. What was the effect of PTU injections on the thyroidectomized rat's BMR?

How does administering PTU affect the body's ability to regulate its metabolic rate?

Recall how administering PTU affects the body's ability to regulate its metabolic rate. ... PTU inhibits thyroid hormone. This will increase the metabolic rate as evidenced by higher increased) oxygen c sumption from less shivering.

What did the thyroxine injection do to the rats?

Thyroxine injection decreased body weight gain in both growth stages. Bone length, width and weight were not affected by thyroxine injection in weaned rats. Thyroxine injection increased femur length and tail growth, but did not change bone width in suckling rats.

What is the effect of thyroid stimulating hormone?

TSH stimulates thyroid hormone secretion through enhancing iodide uptake, thyroglobulin synthesis, and thyroperoxidase activity. Additionally, TSH also increases blood flow to the thyroid gland and stimulates hypertrophy and hyperplasia of thyroid follicular cells to exert growth effects on the thyroid gland.[6]

What influence does PTU have on oxygen consumption?

What influence does PTU have on the oxygen consumption? PTU lowers the rate of oxygen consumption. Oxygen consumption rate is inversely correlated with metabolic rate.

What effect will the calcitonin injections have on the calcitonin treated rat?

Predict Question 3: What effect will the calcitonin injections have on the calcitonin-treated rat's vertebral bone density? Your answer: The calcitonin injections will increase the rat's vertebral bone density (indicated by a less-negative T score).

Which of the rats developed a goiter after injection with PTU?

The Hypox rat became hyperthyroidic and developed a goiter, which is similar to the normal rat. The dose was too large. What was the effect of propylthiouracil (PTU) injections on the normal rat's BMR?

How is a Thyroidectomized rat treated?

SUMMARY. Cold-exposed, thyroidectomized rats have been treated with the same daily substitution dose of thyroxine (6y–12y) as prevented vacuoles from arising in the anterior pituitary basophiles of likewise thyroidectomized rats kept at a temperature of -f 25°–+30° C.

What does methimazole do to the body?

Methimazole prevents the thyroid gland from producing too much thyroid hormone. Methimazole is used to treat hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid). It is also used before thyroid surgery or radioactive iodine treatment.

What happens when thyroxine is too low?

In adults, thyroxine deficiency will lower the metabolic rate, causing weight gain, memory problems, infertility, fatigue, and muscle stiffness.

Which of the following is the primary effect of the thyroid hormones T3 and T4?

The main activity of the thyroid hormones T3 and T4 is to boost the basal metabolic rates of proteins, fats, and carbohydrates as well as vitamins.

What is the function of melanocyte stimulating hormone?

Melanocyte-stimulating hormone describes a group of hormones produced by the pituitary gland, hypothalamus and skin cells. It is important for protecting the skin from UV rays, development of pigmentation and control of appetite.

How can I increase my thyroid stimulating hormone?

1. Exercise. Exercise naturally boosts metabolism. ...
2. Eat More of These. Iodine is needed for the body to be able to produce the thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) that activates the thyroid. ...
3. Eat Less of These. ...
4. Get a Blood Panel Evaluation.

What causes low thyroid stimulating hormone?

Low Levels of TSH

This could be caused by: Graves' disease (your body's immune system attacks the thyroid) Too much iodine in your body. Too much thyroid hormone medication.

Why were ovariectomized rats used in this experiment How does the fact that the rats Areovariectomized explain their baseline T scores?

How does the fact that the rats are ovariectomized explain their baseline T scores? They were used since they no longer produce estrogen and this experiement tested estrogen therapy or calcitonin therapy. The rats all had osteoporosis since estrogen loss weakens bone growth, which is why they had baseline T scores.

Why did the metabolic rates differ between the normal rat and surgically altered rats?

The metabolic rates differed between the normal rat and the surgically altered rats because the surgically altered rats could not produce specific hormones (t4 and TSH) since they no longer have either a thyroid or pituitary gland.

Which of the following improved the vertebral bone density of the rats?

Parathyroid hormone (1-34) increases vertebral bone mass, compressive strength, and quality in old rats. Bone. 1995 Dec;17(6):507-11. doi: 10.1016/8756-3282(95)00371-1.

What was the effect of thyroxine on the metabolic rate of the animals?

The thyroid hormone thyroxine increases both basal metabolic rate and urinary water loss in mammals.

How does thyroxine affect metabolic rate?

Thyroxine is produced by the thyroid gland , which stimulates the basal metabolic rate. It controls the speed at which oxygen and food products react to release energy for the body to use. Thyroxine plays an important role in growth and development.

Why did not the administration of propylthiouracil have any effect on the metabolic rate for either the Thyroidectomized or hypophysectomized rats explain?

Why didn't the administration of propylthiouracil have any effect on the metabolic rate of either the thyroidectomized (Tx) rat or the hypophysectomized (Hypox) rat? Propylthiouracil inhibits the production of thyroxine. ... Thyroxine increased the baseline metabolic rate in each rat.
