What type of joint is glenohumeral?
Jessica Young The glenohumeral joint is structurally a ball-and-socket joint and functionally is considered a diarthrodial, multiaxial, joint. [1] The glenohumeral articulation involves the humeral head with the Projection of the Glenoid Center Point Within the Glenoid Vault - NCBI
Is glenohumeral a cartilaginous joint?
The two main bones that make up the shoulder (glenohumeral) joint are the scapula (shoulder blade) and the humerus (upper arm bone). Where these two bones meet, the glenohumeral joint, they are covered with cartilage. This allows for smooth joint motion with minimal friction.
What type of joint is shoulder joint?
Articulations. ... The glenohumeral joint is the main articulation of the shoulder joint. It is the multiaxial ball-and-socket synovial joint formed by the articular surfaces of the glenoid cavity and the head of the humerus. The glenoid cavity depth is increased by a rim of fibrocartilage that surrounds it.
Is the glenohumeral joint mobile?
It involves articulation between the glenoid cavity of the scapula (shoulder blade) and the head of the humerus (upper arm bone). Due to the very loose joint capsule that gives a limited interface of the humerus and scapula, it is the most mobile joint of the human body.
Is glenohumeral joint?
The glenohumeral (GH) joint is a true synovial ball-and-socket style diarthrodial joint that is responsible for connecting the upper extremity to the trunk. It is one of four joints that comprise the shoulder complex. This joint is formed from the combination of the humeral head and the glenoid fossa of the scapula.

The glenohumeral joint is the one most people think of as the shoulder joint. It is formed where a ball (head) at the top of the humerus fits into a shallow cuplike socket (glenoid) in the scapula, allowing a wide range of movement.
What is glenohumeral ligament?
In human anatomy, the glenohumeral ligaments (GHL) are three ligaments on the anterior side of the glenohumeral joint (i.e. between the glenoid cavity of the scapula and the head of the humerus; colloquially called the shoulder joint).
What is glenohumeral joint effusion shoulder?
Summary. Excess fluid around a joint—called an effusion—affects larger joints, such as the knee. A joint effusion can occur as a result of injury, infection, or different types of arthritis. In many cases, fluid can be drained, and steps taken to address the cause (such as antibiotics for an infection).
Where is the glenohumeral joint located?
The glenohumeral joint is what most people think of as the shoulder joint. It's the major joint in the shoulder, where the rounded top, or head, of the humerus, nestles into a rounded socket of the scapula, called the glenoid. This ball-and-socket construction allows for circular movement of the arm.
What supports the glenohumeral joint?
The joint is stabilized by a ring of fibrous cartilage surrounding the glenoid, called the labrum. the joint. Four short muscles originate on the scapula and pass around the shoulder where their tendons fuse together to form the rotator cuff.
What ligaments support the glenohumeral joint?
Glenohumeral ligaments- Composed of a superior, middle, and inferior ligament, these three ligaments combine to form the glenohumeral joint capsule connecting the glenoid fossa to the humerus.
Which is the saddle joint?
Saddle joints are also known as sellar joints. These highly flexible joints are found in various places in the body, including the thumb, shoulder, and inner ear.
What type of joint is the elbow?
The arm in the human body is made up of three bones that join together to form a hinge joint called the elbow. The upper arm bone or humerus connects from the shoulder to the elbow forming the top of the hinge joint. The lower arm or forearm consists of two bones, the radius and the ulna.
What type of joint is the sternoclavicular joint?
The sternoclavicular (SC) joint is a saddle-shaped, synovial joint that serves as the primary skeletal connection between the axial skeleton and the upper limb.
What is glenohumeral joint arthritis?
Glenohumeral joint arthritis is caused by the destruction of the cartilage layer covering the bones in the glenohumeral joint. This creates a bone-on-bone environment, which encourages the body to produce osteophytes (bone spurs).
What is glenohumeral osteoarthritis?
Glenohumeral osteoarthritis (OA) is defined as progressive loss of articular cartilage, resulting in bony erosion, pain, and decreased function. This article provides a gross overview of this disease, along with peer-reviewed research by experts in the field.
What is a glenohumeral joint injection?
Glenohumeral joint injection
Used for pain relief of shoulder arthritis and frozen shoulder affecting the shoulder. Procedure. Posterior Approach: The patient sits with their arm resting at their side with the shoulder in neutral rotation resting on their lap.
What is the St joint?
Any movement of the scapula on the thorax must result in movement at either the AC joint, the SC joint, or both; that is, the functional ST joint is part of a true closed chain with the AC and SC joints and the thorax.
What two bones meet at the glenohumeral joint?
The shoulder joint itself known as the Glenohumeral joint, (is a ball and socket articulation between the head of the humerus and the glenoid cavity of the scapula)
Is a shoulder a hinge joint?
All hinge joints also contain muscles, ligaments, and other tissues that stabilize the joint. Hinge joints are more stable than ball-and-socket joints, which include the shoulder and hip joints.
Which two bones does the scapula form joints with?
The scapula (shoulder blade) lies on the posterior aspect of the shoulder. It articulates with the humerus (arm bone) to form the shoulder joint (the glenohumeral joint). The scapula is a flat, triangular-shaped bone with a prominent ridge running across its posterior surface.
What joint is the knee?
The knee joint is a hinge joint, meaning it allows the leg to extend and bend back and forth with minimal side-to-side motion. It is comprised of bones, cartilage, ligaments, tendons, and other tissues.
What kind of joint is Radioulnar?
The proximal radioulnar joint is a pivot type of synovial joint, which consists of the head of the radius articulating with the radial notch of the ulna. The radial head is tightly bound into the radial notch of the ulna by the anular ligament that secures it in place.
