An X-ray tube is a vacuum tube that converts electrical input power into X-rays. The availability of this controllable source of X-rays created the field of radiography, the imaging of partly opaque objects with penetrating radiation.

What is the function of the x-ray tube?

The x-ray tube serves the function of creating x-ray photons from electric energy supplied by the x-ray generator. The process of creating the x-ray beam is very inefficient, with only 1% of the electric energy converted to x-ray photons and the remaining 99% converted to heat in the x-ray tube assembly.

What is x-ray tube explain?

X-ray tube, also called Roentgen tube, evacuated electron tube that produces X rays by accelerating electrons to a high velocity with a high-voltage field and causing them to collide with a target, the anode plate. ... Only about 1 percent of the electron energy is converted to X rays.

What is target xray tube?

Most x-ray tube anodes are made of tungsten (the target material). Tungsten has a high atomic number (Z=74) and a high melting point of 3370°C with a correspondingly low rate of evaporation.

What is modern xray tube?

The device used to produce X-rays is called an X-ray tube. ... These electrons are stopped by the target and in the process X-rays are emitted. These X-rays are brought out of the tube through a window made of thin mica or mylar or some such material which does not absorb X-rays appreciably.

The X-Ray Tube & Components

What is the most common cause of X-ray tube failure?

The most frequent mode of failure of an x-ray tube is the failure to adequately dissipate the heat generated during normal operation. It is well known that 99%+ of the kinetic energy imparted on the electron beam is lost in the form of heat at the anode target.

How do xrays work?

An X-ray is produced when a negatively charged electrode is heated by electricity and electrons are released, thereby producing energy. That energy is directed toward a metal plate, or anode, at high velocity and an X-ray is produced when the energy collides with the atoms in the metal plate.

What do xrays consist of?

What are X-rays? An X-ray is a packet of electromagnetic energy (photon) that originate from the electron cloud of an atom. This is generally caused by energy changes in an electron, which moves from a higher energy level to a lower one, causing the excess energy to be released.

Which gas is present in x-ray tube?

Hyelium gas was taken in Cathode ray tube (CRT). For better results, Hydrogen gas can be used.

Why is an x-ray tube evacuated?

i) The cathode ray tube is evacuated to a low pressure so that the electrons may move without being obstructed by air molecules.

Which metal is used in x-ray?

Tungsten is the element most commonly used to make X-rays. When an element is bombarded by electrons, most of the electrons do not create X-rays; they add kinetic energy in the form of heat.

What are the harmful effects of X-rays?

Exposure to high radiation levels can have a range of effects, such as vomiting, bleeding, fainting, hair loss, and the loss of skin and hair. However, X-rays provide such a low dose of radiation that they are not believed to cause any immediate health problems.

What is leakage radiation?

Leakage radiation means radiation emanating from the diagnostic or therapeutic source assembly, except for the useful beam and radiation produced when the exposure switch or timer is not activated. ... Leakage radiation means all radiation coming from within the source housing, except the useful beam.

Why is a rotating anode used?

The reason behind the introduction of rotating anodes is related to the dispersal of heat. ... In the case of a rotating anode tube, the heat of the incoming cathode beam is dispersed evenly across the entire surface of the anode as it rotates. This enables rotating anode users to perform longer scans and at higher doses.

Is radium used in X-rays?

[2] Curie worked on the X-ray machine discovered by German scientist Wilhelm Roentgen in 1895. She used her newly discovered element, radium, to be the gamma ray source on x-ray machines. This allowed for more accurate and stronger x-rays.

What is structure of X-ray tube?

X-ray tube structure

An X-ray tube consist of a spiral filament acting as the cathode and a water cooled block of copper as the anode. Both electrodes are sealed off in an evacuated glass-(ceramic)-metal cylinder. The filament made out of Tungsten wire is embedded in a narrow steel groove (1 mm x 10 mm).

Why is molybdenum used in X-rays?

The anode converts the energy of incident electrons into x-rays dissipating heat as a byproduct. ... Molybdenum is also often used as the target material for anodes used in mammography because it has an intermediate atomic number (Z=42) and the produced characteristic x-rays are of energies suited for this purpose.

Is an x-ray tube filled with gas?

Most x-ray tubes in use today are "filled" with a vacuum. ... Nearly every x-ray tube made after 1913 contains a tungsten filament made using the process used in light bulbs. In a typical vacuum x-ray tube, electrons accelerated from a heated cathode toward a metal anode by a large potential difference.

How many types of X-ray tubes are there?

There are two basic types of microfocus X-ray tubes: solid-anode tubes and metal-jet-anode tubes. Solid-anode microfocus X-ray tubes are in principle very similar to the Coolidge tube, but with the important distinction that care has been taken to be able to focus the electron beam into a very small spot on the anode.

Why do discharge tubes have low pressure?

You need the low pressure in the tube so that the passage of the beam of electrons is not impeded very much by collision with air molecules. You need a reasonably high accelerating voltage to give the electrons enough kinetic energy to make the fluorescent screen glow when the electrons hit the screen.

Who invented X-rays?

W.C. Röntgen reported the discovery of X-rays in December 1895 after seven weeks of assiduous work during which he had studied the properties of this new type of radiation able to go through screens of notable thickness. He named them X-rays to underline the fact that their nature was unknown.

Who invented xray tube?

Wilhelm Roentgen discovered x-rays using a Crookes tube in 1895. Until the invention of the Coolidge tube in 1913, all x-ray tubes were based on the Crookes or cold cathode gas tube technology. From the late 1910s onwards there was a rapid replacement of gas tubes by the far more effective Coolidge tubes.

What is focusing Cup in xray?

A focusing cup is a negatively charged, shallow depression on the surface of the cathode of an x-ray tube, which concentrates the electron beam towards the focal spot of the anode. It is typically composed of nickel. The negative charge of the focusing cup helps to accelerate the electrons towards the anode.

What is tube loading?

The amount of heat energy deposited during an x-ray exposure is known as the tube loading. What factors will determine the tube loading that may occur. X-ray tube loading depends on the tube voltage (kVp), voltage waveform, tube current, exposure time, and number of exposures.
