ETT stylet is a device that allows the endotracheal tube (ETT) to be stiffened and the shape molded as desired.

When is a stylet used?

What is the main use of lighted stylet-assisted tracheal intubation devices? The main indication is in patients with a difficult airway for whom a direct laryngoscopy (a procedure for visualization of the vocal cords) has failed, for example, a trauma patient with bleeding in the area behind the mouth (oropharynx).

What is a lighted stylet used for?

The lighted stylet is a device that uses illumination to facilitate tracheal placement of the endotracheal tube, thus eliminating the need for direct laryngoscopy. Typically, the stylet is inserted through an endotracheal tube and is then bent to a near right angle.

What are the uses of Bougie?

Bougie: A thin cylinder of rubber, plastic, metal or another material that a physician inserts into or through a body passageway, such as the esophagus, to diagnose or treat a condition. A bougie may be used to widen a passageway, guide another instrument into a passageway, or dislodge an object.

What is the use of Bougie and stylet?

The bougie or “tactile stylet” is a low-cost, easy-to-use device that is useful as a first choice in the management of anticipated and unanticipated difficult airways.

Bougies versus Stylets

What is a Combitube airway?

The Combitube is a twin lumen device designed for use in emergency situations and difficult airways. It can be inserted without the need for visualization into the oropharynx, and usually enters the esophagus.

What does an LMA do?

Laryngeal mask airways (LMA) are supraglottic airway devices. They may be used as a temporary method to maintain an open airway during the administration of anesthesia or as an immediate life-saving measure in a patient with a difficult or failed airway.

What are two types of laryngoscope blades?

Laryngoscopes are designed for visualization of the vocal cords and for placement of the ETT into the trachea under direct vision. The two main types are the curved Macintosh blade and the straight blade (i.e., Miller with a curved tip and Wisconsin or Foregger with a straight tip).

What is a medical stylet?

Medical Definition of stylet

1 also stylette \ stī-ˈlet \ a : a slender surgical probe. b : a thin wire inserted into a catheter to maintain rigidity or into a hollow needle to maintain patency. 2 : a relatively rigid elongated organ or appendage (as a piercing mouthpart) of an animal.

What are the advantages of the use of a lighted stylet over traditional laryngoscopy?

Our data indicate that the lighted stylet is an effective and safe device for assisting intubation with a direct laryngoscope. The lighted stylet was associated with a higher success rate of first attempts at tracheal intubation and less mucosal bleeding.

What is retrograde intubation?

Retrograde intubation is an alternative technique of establishing definitive airway in these patients when blind nasal intubation fails and fiberoptic bronchoscope is not available. We tested the retrograde intubation through nasal route in patients with LMO less than 2 cm.

What is Lightwand?

LIGHTWAND tracheal intubation is a technique in which an illuminated stylet is introduced into the endotracheal tube, and the tip of the tube is directed into the trachea guided by transillumination of the neck tissues.

What is ETT size?

The size of an ETT signifies the inner diameter of its lumen in millimeters. Available sizes range from 2.0 to 12.0 mm in 0.5 mm increments. For oral intubations, a 7.0-7.5 ETT is generally appropriate for an average woman and a 7.5-8.5 ETT for an average man.

When do you remove the stylet?

Once through the dermal layers (< 1cm), remove the stylet and advance slowly without the stylet. Stop once CSF is seen to flow into the hub of the spinal needle.

When is an endotracheal tube used?

An endotracheal tube is placed when a patient is unable to breathe on their own, when it is necessary to sedate and "rest" someone who is very ill, or to protect the airway. The tube maintains the airway so that air can pass into and out of the lungs.

How is a laryngoscopy used?

1. One must first properly position the patient. ...
2. Next, one must open the patient's mouth by using the right hand. ...
3. The laryngoscope is then inserted in the right side of the mouth, and the blade is then used to sweep the tongue to the left, then the blade is smoothly advanced to the epiglottis.

Who does a laryngoscopy?

Ear, nose, and throat specialists (also called ENT doctors or otolaryngologists) do laryngoscopies. They can do: an indirect laryngoscopy: The doctor uses a small mirror and a light to examine the larynx and vocal cords.

What is fiber optic laryngoscope?

Flexible fiberoptic laryngoscopy is the most common examination used to view the throat and its surrounding structures. Performed endoscopically, it is performed to visualize abnormalities, biopsy tissue, or remove small growths, such as polyps, from the region.

What is a king airway?

DEFINITION: The KING LT-D is a disposable supraglottic airway created as an alternative to endotracheal intubation or mask ventilation. The KING LT-D is designed for positive pressure ventilation as well as for spontaneously breathing patients.

What is LMA ventilation?

Laryngeal mask airway (LMA) ventilation is a method for providing rescue ventilation to unconscious patients or patients without a gag reflex that is technically easier than use of most other effective ventilatory methods.

Is LMA a definitive airway?

However, the laryngeal mask airway is not considered a definitive airway and must be replaced with an endotracheal tube by a skilled provider of airway management at an appropriate time after resuscitation.

What is a supraglottic airway?

Supraglottic airways (SGAs) are a group of airway devices that can be inserted into the pharynx to allow ventilation, oxygenation, and administration of anesthetic gases, without the need for endotracheal intubation.

How is Combitube used?

The Combitube—also known as the esophageal tracheal airway or esophageal tracheal double-lumen airway—is a blind insertion airway device (BIAD) used in the pre-hospital and emergency setting. It is designed to provide an airway to facilitate the mechanical ventilation of a patient in respiratory distress.

How does a nasopharyngeal airway work?

An NPA is a tube that is designed to provide an airway passage from the nose to the posterior pharynx. NPAs can create a patent pathway and help avoid airway obstruction due to hypertrophic tissue. The NPA creates a patent airway throughout the distance of the tube.
