The gonads, the primary reproductive organs, are the testes in the male and the ovaries in the female. These organs are responsible for producing the sperm and ova, but they also secrete hormones and are considered to be endocrine glands.

What is the male gonad known as?

Male gonad: A testis, one of a pair of organs located behind the penis in a pouch of skin called the scrotum. The testes produce and store sperm and are also the body's main source of male hormones.

What is the female gonad and the male gonad?

The male gonads are the testes and the female gonads are the ovaries. These reproductive system organs are necessary for sexual reproduction as they are responsible for the production of male and female gametes.

What is the male reproductive organ called?

These external organs include the penis, scrotum and testicles. Internal organs include the vas deferens, prostate and urethra. The male reproductive system is responsible for sexual function, as well as urination.

What are the male gonads called and what do they produce?

The gonads, the primary reproductive organs, are the testes in the male and the ovaries in the female. These organs are responsible for producing the sperm and ova, but they also secrete hormones and are considered to be endocrine glands.

What are the ejaculatory ducts?

The ejaculatory ducts (ductus ejaculatorii) are paired structures in male anatomy. Each ejaculatory duct is formed by the union of the vas deferens with the duct of the seminal vesicle. ... During ejaculation, semen passes through the prostate gland, enters the urethra and exits the body via the urinary meatus.

What is gonad cell?

gonad, in zoology, primary reproductive gland that produces reproductive cells (gametes). In males the gonads are called testes; the gonads in females are called ovaries. (see ovary; testis).

What is the function of the gonads?

The two major functions of the gonads in the adult are steroid hormone production and gametogenesis. Reproductive hormones are also pivotal in sexual differentiation, fetal development, growth and sexual maturation.

What does gonad mean?

: a reproductive gland (such as an ovary or testis) that produces gametes.

Why are gonads known as the primary organ of the reproductive system?

The primary reproductive organs, or gonads, consist of the ovaries and testes. These organs are responsible for producing the egg and sperm cells gametes), and hormones.

What is the name of the male gonads quizlet?

The male gonads are testes, and the female gonads are the ovaries. They both function to pro- duce gametes (eggs and sperm) and sex hormones. The ovaries produce eggs and the hormones estro- gen and progesterone.

What is the function of gonads quizlet?

Gonads are male and female sex glands. They produce both sex hormones and sex cells. In the male, the interstitial cells of the testes produce and secrete the male sex hormone testosterone. This controls the development and function of the male secondary sex organs, as well as the secondary sexual characteristics.

What are male and female hormones produced in the gonads and their functions?

Endocrine system: gonads and their hormones: The gonads are the sex organs. Male testes produce androgens, while female ovaries produce estrogen and progesterone. The ovaries produce hormones, such as estrogen and progesterone, which cause secondary sex characteristics and prepare the body for childbirth.

What are the male and the female gonads in the human beings mention their functions *?

Answer: The male gonads in human beings are a pair of testes. ... The function of testis is to regulate the production of sperms and secretion of male hormone, testosterone. The female gonads in human beings are pair of ovaries located in the abdominal cavity near the kidneys.

What is gonadal tissue?

Gonadal tissues include germ cells, cells from the sex cord, and gonadal stromal cells. [ MESH:D018309 ] Synonyms: gonadal tissue neoplasm. cancer or benign tumor. neoplastic disease or syndrome.

What causes gonads to become testes?

Proliferation of the mesonephric system (tubules and corpuscles) in the gonads stimulates masculinization of the gonads into testis. Reduction of the mesonephric tubular system in the gonads results in female gonad development.

What hormones act on the gonads?

Gonadal Hormones

Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) secreted from the hypothalamus regulates the secretion of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) from the pituitary, and then FSH and LH act on the gonads to stimulate gonadal development and maturation.

Where does the gonad migrate to in the male?

These cells migrate into the genital ridges, which develop into the gonads. Here, the primordial germ cells start to develop into either eggs, if the gonad is becoming an ovary, or sperm, if the gonad is becoming a testis.

What is gonad of fish?

Male fishes usually have paired testes that produce sperm. Females usually have paired ovaries that produce eggs. ... The two long pale organs are the testes, the male gonads. The deep red strips of tissue either side of the backbone are the kidneys.

What does the fetal gonad contain?

The fetal gonads are derived from a primordial germ cell pool and differentiate into morphologically distinct testes and ovaries early in gestation, between 6 and 8 weeks. The fetal testes produce two hormones that induce male sexual differentiation: testosterone and anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH).

Where is ejaculatory duct located?

On each side of the prostate gland (in the male reproductive system) is an ejaculatory duct. Each ejaculatory duct is about two centimeters in length and is created when the seminal vesicle's duct merges with the vas deferens.

Which duct store and transports the sperm?

Ductus deferens, also called vas deferens, thick-walled tube in the male reproductive system that transports sperm cells from the epididymis, where the sperm are stored prior to ejaculation. Each ductus deferens ends in an enlarged portion, an ampulla, which acts as a reservoir.

Where does the ejaculatory duct open into?

The ducts, which open into the urethra about halfway through the prostate gland (q.v.), function to mix the sperm stored in the ampulla with fluids secreted by the seminal vesicles and to transport these substances to the prostate.

Where are gonadal hormones produced?

Gonadal hormones – nearly always synonymous with gonadal steroids – are hormones produced by the gonads, and include both steroid and peptide hormones. The major steroid hormones include estradiol and progesterone from the ovaries, and testosterone from the testes.

What is gonadal function disorder in female?

Medical conditions that impact the gonads, or testes, of men are known as gonadal disorders. In women, the ovaries are also considered gonads. They can cause complications such as infertility, sexual dysfunction or low testosterone.
