Crater: A small funnel-shaped depression in the summit of a volcano at the top of the conduit or pipe through which the magma reaches the surface.

What is a funnel shaped volcano?

A volcanic crater is a funnel shaped hollow at the top of the vent. It is formed as lava and gas and ash are blasted upwards from the main vent. Material falls back down to earth around the vent and slowly piles up forming a rim around it.

What is the opening at the top of a volcano called?

A volcanic vent is an opening exposed on the earth's surface where volcanic material is emitted. All volcanoes contain a central vent underlying the summit crater of the volcano.

What is the funnel shaped opening at the top of a volcano?

Crater: A small funnel-shaped depression in the summit of a volcano at the top of the conduit or pipe through which the magma reaches the surface.

What forms at the top of a volcano after an eruption?

A caldera is a large depression formed when a volcano erupts and collapses. ... As a result, the sides and top of the volcano collapse inward. Calderas vary in size from one to 100 kilometers (0.62 to 62 miles) in diameter. Some calderas form a lake as the bowl-shaped depression fills with water.

Who Lives at the Bottom of Volcanoes?

What are the 3 types of volcano?

There are three types of volcanoes: cinder cones (also called spatter cones), composite volcanoes (also called stratovolcanoes), and shield volcanoes. Figure 11.22 illustrates the size and shape differences amongst these volcanoes.

What is the mouth of the volcano called?

Crater - Mouth of a volcano - surrounds a volcanic vent.

What are the 5 types of volcanic eruption?

• Hydrothermal eruption. An eruption driven by the heat in a hydrothermal systems. ...
• Phreatic eruption. An eruption driven by the heat from magma interacting with water. ...
• Phreatomagmatic eruption. ...
• Lava. ...
• Strombolian and Hawaiian eruptions. ...
• Vulcanian eruptions. ...
• Subplinian and Plinian eruptions.

What type of volcano erupts violently?

Because they form in a system of underground conduits, stratovolcanoes may blow out the sides of the cone as well as the summit crater. Stratovolcanoes are considered the most violent.

What is quiet eruption?

Quiet Eruptions

Volcanoes that have very hot, low-silica magma generally erupt quietly. In a quiet eruption, lava erupts in a stream of low-viscosity lava, called a lava flow. Lava flows from a quiet eruption can travel for great distances.

What type of eruption is the most explosive?

The largest and most violent of all the types of volcanic eruptions are Plinian eruptions. They are caused by the fragmentation of gassy magma, and are usually associated with very viscous magmas (dacite and rhyolite).

What are erupted rock fragments called?

Individual eruptive fragments are called pyroclasts ("fire fragments"). Tephra (Greek, for ash) is a generic term for any airborne pyroclastic accumulation. Whereas tephra is unconsolidated, a pyroclastic rock is produced from the consolidation of pyroclastic accumulations into a coherent rock type.

What does ash feel like?

Unlike the soft ash created by burning wood, volcanic ash is hard, abrasive, and does not dissolve in water. Generally, particles of volcanic ash are 2 millimeters (. 08 inches) across or smaller. Coarse particles of volcanic ash look and feel like grains of sand, while very fine particles are powdery.

What is parasitic cone in volcano?

A parasitic cone is the cone-shaped accumulation of volcanic material not part of the central vent of a volcano. It forms from eruptions from fractures on the flank of the volcano. These fractures occur because the flank of the volcano is unstable.

How hot is lava?

The temperature of lava flow is usually about 700° to 1,250° Celsius, which is 2,000° Fahrenheit. Deep inside the earth, usually at about 150 kilometers, the temperature is hot enough that some small part of the rocks begins to melt. Once that happens, the magma (molten rock) will rise toward the surface (it floats).

What is flowing lava called?

Lava is magma once it has been expelled from the interior of a terrestrial planet (such as Earth) or a moon onto its surface. ... The volcanic rock resulting from subsequent cooling is also often called lava. A lava flow is an outpouring of lava during an effusive eruption.

What is the Pacific Ring of Fire?

The Ring of Fire, also referred to as the Circum-Pacific Belt, is a path along the Pacific Ocean characterized by active volcanoes and frequent earthquakes. The majority of Earth's volcanoes and earthquakes take place along the Ring of Fire.

Can you drink rain water with volcanic ash?

The USGS adds, “closer to the volcano, water-soluble components that cling to particles of glass and crystals in the ash may lead to chemical changes,” which can temporarily make the water too toxic to drink. Smaller pieces of ash in particular pose significant problems for fresh water supplies.

What is a ash cloud?

Ash clouds occur where a violent explosive eruption ejects volcanic ash into the atmosphere. ... Ash is composed of small shattered fragments of rock and volcanic glass particles. When gas or water vapour expands dramatically within the magma rocks are blown to pieces by the sudden expansion- an eruption.

What happens when volcanic ash mixes with water?

When volcanic ash mixes with sufficient water it can be eroded, transported and later deposited downslope. When moving, it can look like a mass of wet concrete. Such flows are known as secondary lahars, which can vary in size and speed. These flows can deposit ash and other debris over large areas requiring clean up.

Does Obsidian exist?

obsidian, igneous rock occurring as a natural glass formed by the rapid cooling of viscous lava from volcanoes. Obsidian is extremely rich in silica (about 65 to 80 percent), is low in water, and has a chemical composition similar to rhyolite.

What size are Pyroclastics?

(The term pyroclastic derives from the Greek pyro, meaning “fire,” and clastic, meaning “broken.”) Pyroclastic materials are classified according to their size, measured in millimetres: dust (less than 0.6 mm [0.02 inch]), ash (fragments between 0.6 and 2 mm [0.02 to 0.08 inch]), cinders (fragments between 2 and 64 mm ...

Is Lahar a lava?

When lava erupts beneath a glacier or flows over snow and ice, meltwater from the ice and snow can result in far-reaching lahars. If lava enters a body of water or water enters a lava tube, the water may boil violently and cause an explosive shower of molten spatter over a wide area.

What happens if Mt Hood erupted?

A significant eruption of Mount Hood, such as an eruption of lava domes that collapse to form pyroclastic flows and lahars, would displace several thousand residents and cause billion-dollar-scale damage to infrastructure and buildings.
