What is the function of the clitellum, the only organ visible externally on earthworms? It secretes mucus that is important in reproduction. The worm alternates between extension and pulling the rest of its body after the extension.

What is the function of the clitellum?

animal reproduction

Sexually mature oligochaetes have a clitellum, which is a modification of a section of the body wall consisting of a glandular, saddlelike thickening near the gonopores. During copulation, the clitellum secretes a mucus that keeps the worms paired while sperm are being exchanged.

What is a clitellum and what is its primary function?

The clitellum is a thick, saddle-like ring found in the epidermis (skin) of the worm, usually with a light-colored pigment. To form a cocoon for its eggs, the clitellum secretes a viscous fluid. This organ is used in sexual reproduction of some annelids, such as leeches.

What is the clitellum quizlet?

Clitellum: series of anterior segments enclosed in thick glandular epidermis; encompasses females gonopores and secretes mucus. Hermaphrodites, zygotes develop in a coccon and emerge and juveniles, direct development.

What is the function of the earthworm's clitellum that was observed in the earthworm lab?

Explanation: The clitellum is a thickened glandular and non segmented section of the body wall near the head of the earthworm that secretes a viscid sac in which the eggs are deposited. The clitellum is part of the reproductive system of earthworm. It also secretes a viscous fluid to form a cocoon for it's eggs.

The main function of clitellum is

What clitellum means?

: a thickened glandular section of the body wall of some annelids that secretes a viscid sac in which the eggs are deposited.

Where is the clitellum on an earthworm?

The clitellum is part of the reproductive system of earthworms. It is a thick saddle-like ring found in the epidermis (skin) of the worm. It is a non-segmented glandular section near the head at the anterior end of the body. It secretes a viscid sac where eggs are stored.

When earthworms mate the clitellum does which of the following?

The earthworms each have two male openings and two sperm receptacles, which take in the sperm from another mate. The earthworms have a pair of ovaries that produce eggs. The clitellum will form a slime tube around it, which will fill with an albuminous fluid. The earthworm will move forward out of the slime tube.

Which segments are the clitellum located?

The clitellum forms a band that can be flared, non-flared, saddle-shaped, or annular. It is generally found between segments 26 and 33. The clitellum is only found on adult worms.

Which of the following are ectotherms lay eggs have scales and breathe with a lung?

Toads have thicker, bumpy skin and live on land. Are cold-blooded (ectothermic); breathe with lungs; most lay eggs, although in some the eggs hatch inside the female; and have scales or plates.

What is the purpose of excretory openings in earthworms?

Excretory System of Earthworms

Earthworms use diffusion to excrete carbon dioxide through their skin. For the nitrogenous wastes, the excretory system of earthworms contains specialized organs known as nephridia.

What is the function of the seminal receptacles in an earthworm?

Seminal receptacles is the beginning of the reproductive system in the earthworm. Seminal vesicles is where the sperm are produced. The earthworms digestive system consists of mouth, pharnyx, esophagus, crop, gizzard, and intestine.

What are the excretory organs of earthworm?

Nephridia are the primary excretory organs of earthworm that carry out the duties of excretion and osmoregulation. Based on where they remove the metabolic wastes, they are of two types – enteronephric nephridia and enteronephric nephridia.

What is the bump on a worm?

The bump is the clitellum, the saddle shaped swollen area 1/3 of the way back containing the gland cells which secrete a slimy material (mucus) to form the cocoon which will hold the worm embryos.

Do worms feel pain?

But a team of Swedish researchers has uncovered evidence that worms do indeed feel pain, and that worms have developed a chemical system similar to that of human beings to protect themselves from it. The Swedish scientists, J.

What is the function of the pharynx in an earthworm?

Earthworms push the pharynx out of their mouths to grasp hold of organic matter. They pull the food back into their mouths and then wet it with saliva.

How many segments are there in the clitellum?

The clitellum forms a band that can be flared, non-flared, saddle-shaped, or annular. It is generally found between segments 26 and 33. The clitellum is only found on adult worms. Young or juvenile worms do not have a clitellum.

What is the purpose of a crop in annelids?

crop Food passes from the esophagus to the crop, which is a temporary food storage area. In the crop the food gets mixed together. This mixture then moves into the gizzard. gizzard Earthworms do not have teeth to grind their food, but the muscles of their gizzard churns and mixes the food.

How many segments does an earthworm have from the mouth pore to the clitellum?

Peristomium is the first body segment that also has the mouth. The last segment has the anus. In between segments 14 to 16, there is a prominent dark band of glandular tissue called as the clitellum. These are the fused segments.

Why earthworm is called a hermaphrodite animal?

Earthworms are hermaphrodites because they contain both male and female sex organs. The male and female sex organs can produce both- sperm and egg respectively in each earthworm. Although earthworms are hermaphrodites, they still need a mate to reproduce.

What is the head of a worm called?

Anterior. The 'head' or front of the earthworm is called its anterior.

How many openings does an earthworm have?

Segmented worms also tend to have organ systems that are more developed than the roundworms' or flatworms'. Earthworms, for example, have a complete digestive tract with two openings, as well as an esophagus and intestines. The circulatory system consists of paired hearts and blood vessels.

What is Typhlosole and its function?

Typhlosole is a dorsal flap of the intestine that runs along most of its length, effectively forming a tube within a tube, and thereby increasing the absorption area by that of its inner surface. Its function is to increase the intestine surface area for more efficient absorption of digested nutrients.

What is the function of Chloragogen cells?

Chloragogen cells, also called as y cells, are cells in annelids they are star shaped that function similarly to the liver in vertebrates. The cells store glycogen and neutralize toxins and are present in coelomic fluid of some annelids.
