We hypothesize that the characteristic staminal lever mechanism functions as a key innovation. It is defined as a functional unit including the modification of stamens to lever-like structures, their reversible movement, and the organization of the remaining floral structures involved in the process of pollen transfer.

What is pollination lever mechanism?

The anther lobe comes in contact with the rear of the insect's body where the pollen grains get attached. When the same insect visits another flower with a mature gynoecium, the pollen grains are picked up by the receptive stigma. This process of pollination is called the lever mechanism.

What is Ornithophily in biology?

Ornithophily or bird pollination is the pollination of flowering plants by birds.

Which flower shows the lever mechanism pollination?

Option A: Salvia is an example of lever mechanism of pollination since it belongs to the Labiatae family. Therefore, this is the correct option.

What is turn pipe mechanism?

Pollination occurs by the lever or turns pipe mechanism. The petals of the Salvia are bifurcated. When the insect visits some flower and sits on the petals, then the stamens are brought down to the touch the back of insect and pollen are laden on it. When the insect visits another flower, cross-pollination occurs.

Staminal Lever Mechanism in Salvia L. (Lamiaceae)

What is piston mechanism of pollination?

In the piston mechanism, the keel tip moves under the pressure of the insect while anthers and stigma keep their place. Pollen is released from the anthers and pushed out through a hole in the keel tip. It can be dispersed with repeated visits.

Can different plants pollinate each other?

First, cross pollination can only occur between varieties, not species. So, for example, a cucumber cannot cross pollinate with a squash. They are not the same species. ... Second, the fruit from a plant that is cross pollinated would not be affected.

What is pollination by bats called?

Bat pollination is called chiropterophily. ... Plants pollinated by bats often have white or pale nocturnal flowers that are large and bell shaped. Many of these flowers have large amounts of nectar, and emit a smell that attracts bats, such as a strong fruity or musky odor.

What do you mean by Anemophily?

Anemophily or wind pollination is a form of pollination whereby pollen is distributed by wind. Almost all gymnosperms are anemophilous, as are many plants in the order Poales, including grasses, sedges, and rushes.

What is pollination by wind called?

Anemophily is the process when pollen is transported by air currents from one individual plant to another. About 12% of the world's flowering plants are wind-pollinated, including grasses and cereal crops, many trees, and the infamous allergenic ragweeds.

What is Ornithophily with example?

Ornithophily refers to the transfer of pollen grains from the anther to the stigma of a flower with the help of birds. Simply we can say, ornithophily is the bird pollination. Examples of bird pollinators are hummingbirds and sunbirds. ... It can produce hybrid offspring in nature when pollination occurs between species.

What is Ornithophily and Chiropterophily?

Chiropterophily is pollination of plants by bats. ... Ornithophily or bird pollination is the pollination of flowering plants by birds. This coevolutionary association is derived from insect pollination and is particularly well developed in some parts of the world, especially in the tropics and on some island chains.

What is Ornithophily short answer?

Ornithophily or bird pollination is the pollination of flowering plants by birds. ... The plants typically have colourful, often red, flowers with long tubular structures holding ample nectar and orientations of the stamen and stigma that ensure contact with the pollinator.

What is trap door mechanism in Ficus?

Trap door mechanism is present in Ficus carica. The receptacle forms a cup having a cavity. The cavity has a pore called ostiole near which male flowers are present. Female flowers are present at the bottom and gall flowers are present between these types. The pollinating insect is Blastophaga or gall insect.

Is Salvia an entomophily?

The correct answer is option (B) Insects. In Salvia, pollination occurs through the agency of insects. If insects are the pollinating agents, then the pollination is called entomophily.

What is the location of ovule?

In flowering plants, the ovule is located inside the portion of the flower called the gynoecium. The ovary of the gynoecium produces one or more ovules and ultimately becomes the fruit wall. Ovules are attached to the placenta in the ovary through a stalk-like structure known as a funiculus (plural, funiculi).

What is Anemophily with example?

Poplar, beech, alder, oak, chestnut, willow and elm trees, wheat, maize, oats, rice and nettle are examples of anemophilous plants because their pollen is transported by the wind. ... For example, posidonia oceanica, a seagrass species, releases pollen into the sea in the form of gelatinous filaments.

What is the pollinating agent in Hydrophily?

The pollination is carried out with the help of water and is known as hydrophilous type of cross pollination. It is generally seen in aquatic plants where pollens are produced in large numbers and with specific weight which makes them float below the surface.

What is the difference between Anemophily and Entomophily?

Anemophily are those flowers in which pollination is carried out by wind. Entomophily are those flowers in which pollination is carried out by insects.

How do bats transfer pollen?

The bat pollination process:

A bats flies to a plant to drink nectar from the flowers. Pollen sticks to the hairs on their body. The bat flies to another plant for more food. The bat transfers the pollen from his body to the new plant.

What is snail pollination?

The pollination in which snails and slugs help in doing pollination is called Malacophilous and the flower which got pollinated by the snails and slug are called malacophilous. ... The third option is the ornithophilous, which is the type of pollination where the pollinating agent is birds.

What is pollination by squirrels called?

Answer Expert Verified

Squirrels act as agents. Hence, pollination carried out by squirrels is, pollination by agents. The process of pollination involves transfer of pollen from one plant to another plant that results in reproduction of plants.

What happens if tomatoes cross pollinate?

When tomatoes cross pollinate, the genetic material of the two tomato varieties will combine and the seeds will be hybridized. Cross pollination will not affect the fruit, only the seeds inside.

Can you pollinate a flower with its own pollen?

Self-pollination occurs when the pollen from the anther is deposited on the stigma of the same flower, or another flower on the same plant. ... Self-pollination occurs in flowers where the stamen and carpel mature at the same time, and are positioned so that the pollen can land on the flower's stigma.
