Single-acting reciprocating pump consists of a piston of which only one side engages the fluid being displaced. ... Double-acting reciprocating pump engage with both sides of the piston, each stroke of the piston carries out both suction and expulsion at the same time.

How does a single acting reciprocating pump work?

Single-acting reciprocating pump: This has one suction valve and one discharge valve. When the piston is moved backward, suction happens and when it moves forward, the delivery valve opens up to discharge the liquid. ... Thus it requires two inflow pipes and two outflow pipes.

What is a single acting pump?

Single-acting pumps discharge on either the forward or return stroke of the piston or plunger; every cycle of the pump displaces only one volume of liquid. In double-acting pumps, liquid is discharged on both the forward and return stroke of the piston.

What is direct acting reciprocating pump?

The function of the drive end (or steam end, or gas end) of a direct-acting pump is to convert the differential pressure of the motive fluid to reciprocating motion for the liquid end. The drive end is similar in construction to the liquid end, containing a double-acting piston and valving.

What is double-acting pump?

The double-acting pump and cylinder are both equipped with two connection ports; one at the lower portion, the other at the top portion of the cylinder body. This system requires hoses for each port. When advancing the piston rod, oil flows in through the lower connection port.

What is the difference between single and double acting cylinder?

What is the difference between double acting and single acting cylinders? Double-Acting – have a port at each end, supplied with hydraulic fluid for both the retraction and extension. Single-Acting – hydraulic fluid enters through a port at one end of the cylinder, which extends the rod by means of area difference.

What is single acting and double acting actuator?

Single action is a control valve that is driven by the air output of the control valve positioner on one side (side open or close) while the other side is moved with the aid of a spring or a membrane. ... The double acting actuator is the actuator that only use piston as its element to operate the valve.

What is the reciprocating pump used?

Share: Reciprocating Pumps are positive displacement machines typically used for low-flow, high-pressure operations. ANSI and the Hydraulic Institute categorize reciprocating pumps by four types. Both pistons and diaphragms are used to provide pumping action while valves regulate flow into and out of the pump body.

Where are reciprocating pump used?

Incorporating reciprocating pumps results in repeatable and precise mechanical operations. Industries that commonly use reciprocating pumps include: Oil and gas: Oil and gas industry applications include disposal, offshore oil, production, injection, feed, charge, steam generators, mainline, and field gathering.

Which pump is more efficient?

Where different pump designs could be used, the centrifugal pump is generally the most economical followed by rotary and reciprocating pumps. Although, positive displacement pumps are generally more efficient than centrifugal pumps, the benefit of higher efficiency tends to be offset by increased maintenance costs.

Where are single acting cylinders used?

Single-acting cylinders are found in most kinds of reciprocating engine. They are almost universal in internal combustion engines (e.g. petrol and diesel engines) and are also used in many external combustion engines such as Stirling engines and some steam engines. They are also found in pumps and hydraulic rams.

What is the advantage of using single acting cylinder?

Advantages of Single Acting Cylinder:

Simple design; easy to install. Low cost of initial purchase. Single port and small housing. Reduction in valve and piping cost compared to double acting cylinders.

How does single acting cylinder work?

A single acting cylinder works with compressed air to actuate the piston in one direction and spring force to return to the base position. Work can be performed in the air driven direction. The cylinder has one port that is used to both supply and vent compressed air.

What is difference between centrifugal pump and reciprocating pump?

The main differences between Centrifugal Pump and Reciprocating Pump are the Centrifugal pump works low medium pressure head and Reciprocating Pump works high medium pressure head.

How do reciprocating pumps work?

The reciprocating pump works on the principle of positive displacement. A reciprocating piston pump consists of a piston that moves back and forth in a cylinder. The piston is connected with a crankshaft with the help of a connecting rod. This piston moves as the connecting rod move due to the motion of the crankshaft.

How does a reciprocating pump operate?

The working of reciprocating pump is as follows: When the power source is connected to crank, the crank will start rotating and connecting rod also displaced along with crank. ... When the crank moves inwards or towards the cylinder, the piston will move towards its left and compresses the liquid in the cylinder.

What is difference between single acting and double acting reciprocating pump?

Single-acting reciprocating pump consists of a piston of which only one side engages the fluid being displaced. ... Double-acting reciprocating pump engage with both sides of the piston, each stroke of the piston carries out both suction and expulsion at the same time.

What is the advantage of reciprocating pump?

Advantages of Reciprocating Pump:

1) Reciprocating pump can deliver the required flow rate very precisely. 2) It gives a continuous rate of discharge. 3) It can deliver fluid at very high pressure. 4) No priming is needed in the reciprocating pump.

Is hand pump a reciprocating pump?

Hand pumps

These are manually operated pumps. They use human power and mechanical advantage to move fluids or air from one place to another. Most hand pumps have plungers or reciprocating pistons and are positive displacement pumps.

Is a reciprocating pump a positive displacement pump?

The most common form of reciprocating pump is the positive displacement type. This type of pump traps a fixed volume (Figure 1) of fluid and displaces it from suction conditions to discharge conditions by means of check valves placed in series, at least one on the suction side and at least one on the discharge side.

What type of flow does reciprocating pump have?

Explanation: The reciprocating pump has a continuous flow. It has a constant discharge even if head on the delivery side varies. Explanation: The reciprocating pump runs at a low speed. Its speed is less than 30m/min.

What is single-acting valve?

What Is a Single-Acting Actuator? Commonly referred to as spring-return actuators, a single-acting pneumatic actuator uses air to open the valve and a mechanical spring (or springs) to close the valve.

What is single-acting positioner?

The positioner is a force- balance servo-mechanism to position valve opening correctly and rapidly by bleeding or feeding air of a pneumatic-operated single acting actuator in accordance with a pneumatic signal from a controller.

What is pressure sequence valve?

A sequence valve is a pressure-operated, normally closed, poppet or spool valve that opens at an adjustable set pressure. Some designs use a spring acting directly on the spool or poppet, others are pilot-operated. A sequence valve always has an external drain port to keep from trapping leakage oil.
