Sigillaria is a genus of extinct, spore-bearing, arborescent plants. It was a lycopodiophyte, and is related to the lycopsids, or club-mosses, but even more closely to quillworts, as was its associate Lepidodendron.

Is Sigillaria extinct?

Sigillaria, extinct genus of tree-sized lycopsids from the Carboniferous Period (about 360 to 300 million years ago) that are related to modern club mosses.

What is Sigillaria made of?

Description. Sigillaria was a tree-like plant reaching a height up to 30 meters, with a tall, single or occasionally forked trunk that lacked wood. Support came from a layer of closely packed leaf bases just below the surface of the trunk, while the center was filled with pith.

What is Sigillaria fossil?

Sigillaria is an extinct tree

Fossil records indicate that Sigillaria evolved during the Late Carboniferous period, but eventually went extinct during the Permian period. In total, the tree existed for around 100 million years, but went extinct around 383 million years ago.

Why did Lepidodendron become extinct?

Decline and extinction

This may have been the result of competition from the emerging woody gymnosperms. Lepidodendron is one of the more common plant fossils found in Pennsylvanian-age (Late Carboniferous) rocks. They are closely related to other extinct lycopsid genera, Sigillaria and Lepidendropsis.

Classification

Who discovered Lepidodendron?

The plant was initially known from two specimens described by Renault (1879) and Michael (1895). Based exclusively on the external characters, these two authors suggested lepidodendroid affinities and named the plant Lepidodendron and Knorria, respectively.

Common fossils include tightly-packed diamond-shaped leaf scars, which were left by the leaves as they dropped off the trunks and stems of the tree fern as it grew.

Where does Sigillaria grow?

Sigillaria was a shorter tree than Lepidodendron and had a different shape; Sigillaria grew in the drier parts of the swamps. Commonly found in Pennsylvanian rocks, Sigillaria is also the only lycophyte bark found in Permian rocks although very infrequently.

What did Lycophytes evolve into?

Evolution of lycophytes

Lycophytes are believed to be the oldest living lineage of vascular plants. Estimates of their evolution date back to more than 400 million years ago during the Silurian Period, long before gymnosperms and angiosperms.
