protocercal tail Possibly the most primitive type of tail found in fish. The posterior end of the vertebral column is straight, dividing the tail fin into two equal lobes supported by fin rays. A Dictionary of Zoology. "protocercal tail ."

What is Protocercal?

adjective. Zoology. (In fishes) of, relating to, or designating a tail of a primitive (or larval) type, in which the end of the vertebral column is straight and the caudal fin is symmetrical and often continuous with the dorsal and anal fins; compare "heterocercal", "homocercal".

What is the meaning of Isocercal tail?

In fish, a tail in which there is an apparent symmetry between the dorsal and ventral regions, the fin rays being supported by equal-sized arches of the penultimate vertebrae as well as by the reduced, plate-like, ultimate vertebra. It is found e.g. in cod.

What is protocercal caudal fin?

Protocercal caudal fins, like those found on hagfish, consist of one pointed lobe that extends around the end of the vertebral column. ... A homocercal fin is generally symmetrical and does not contain vertebrae. It can be forked, rounded, wedge- or crescent-shaped.

What is the functional difference between a Homocercal tail and a Heterocercal tail?

A homocercal tail is a caudal fin composed of two lobes of equal proportion. Homocercal tails are the most common caudal fin type in fish but can come in many symmetrical shapes. A homocercal tail is contrasted with a heterocercal tail which has unequal lobes.

What is the advantage of a Heterocercal tail?

The heterocercal tail is capable of delivering a thrust that can be oriented in a wide range of angles in the vertical plane. The orientation results from a balance of forces acting in the tail.

What is the function of Homocercal tail?

The symmetrical homocercal tail characteristic of advanced fishes (Fig. 1A ) is considered to be highly efficient because it produces a horizontal force component (thrust) without a vertical force component (lift). Energy is therefore conserved by producing force only in the direction of motion.

What are the 5 types of tail fins?

• Fish Fins. Fins are one of the most distinctive features of a fish and appear in several different forms. ...
• Dorsal Fins. ...
• Tail Fin or Caudal fin. ...
• Ventral or Pelvic Fins. ...
• Anal Fin. ...
• Pectoral Fin. ...
• Finlets or Scutes.

How does a fish's tail work?

Fish with streamlined bodies and a stiff, crescent-shaped caudal fin or tail, tend to move rapidly through the water by swishing their tail from side to side. This action propels the fish much like sculling (rowing a boat with an oar) propels a boat. The caudal fin or tail is not the only fin a fish uses to swim.

What is the function of caudal fins?

The caudal fin, or tail fin, is located at the end of a fish and provides the power to move a fish forward. It also acts like a rudder to help a fish steer.

Where is a dorsal fin?

A dorsal fin is a fin located on the back of most marine and freshwater vertebrates within various taxa of the animal kingdom.

Can a fish swim without fins?

Without a caudal fin, a fish such as the tuna would not be able to swim at great speeds over long distances. The stout blunt tail of a grouper helps it in moving swiftly from one hole in a reef to another. Here are some pictures of various caudal fins and how they help the fish.

How does a fish swim in water?

Fish swim by flexing their bodies and tail back and forth. Fish stretch or expand their muscles on one side of their body, while relaxing the muscles on the other side. This motion moves them forward through the water. Fish use their back fin, called the caudal fin, to help push them through the water.

What are types of fins?

For each fish, generally, there are five main fins follows: Dorsal, Pelvic, Caudal (tail), Anal and Pectoral as shown in Fig. 1. Dorsal fins are located either on the back of the fish or its top, it helps the fish during sharp turning or stops.

Do fish have tails or fins?

Tail fin (Caudal fin)

The tail fin (called the caudal fin) is the main source of movement for most fish. It's like the motor on a boat. It shouldn't be surprising then, that it is shaped differently according to how the fish needs to move most of the time. This helps the fish to move more efficiently through the water.

What are the 2 types of fin fish?

• Dorsal fins are found on the back of the fish. ...
• Caudal fins are also known as tail fins. ...
• Anal fins are on the ventral (bottom) surface of the fish, behind the anus. ...
• Pectoral fins are located on each side of the fish, around where the head meets the body.

What is the difference between Homocercal and Heterocercal?

is that heterocercal is (ichthyology) of a fish's tail, such that the vertebral column bends and extends upwards into the upper lobe of the tail, making it larger than the lower lobe; as in sharks, rays, and skates while homocercal is (ichthyology) describing the symmetric tail of a fish that has two lobes extending ...

Why do sharks have a Heterocercal tail?

First, the classical model of locomotion in sharks proposes that the heterocercal tail functions by transmitting posteroventral momentum to the water during steady horizontal swimming, thereby producing an anterodorsal reaction force(Alexander, 1965; Ferry and Lauder, 1996; Lauder, 2000).

What is the purpose of a Heterocercal caudal tail in sharks?

The caudal fin of leopard sharks functions in a manner consistent with the classical model of heterocercal tail function in which the caudal surface moves at an acute angle to the horizontal plane, and hence is expected to generate lift forces and torques which must be counteracted anteriorly by the body and pectoral ...

What is Heterocercal tail example?

The heterocercal tail is present in many fossil fish, in the sharks (Chondrichthyes), and in the more primitive bony fish, e.g. the families Acipenseridae and Polyodontidae.

What is a Heterocercal caudal fin used for?

One of the primary characteristics present in most sharks is the heterocercal tail, which aids in locomotion. Most sharks have eight fins.

Can sharks survive without fins?

The sharks are often still alive when discarded, but without their fins. Unable to swim effectively, they sink to the bottom of the ocean and die of suffocation or are eaten by other predators. ... Some countries have banned this practice and require the whole shark to be brought back to port before removing the fins.

Do fishes fart?

Most fish do use air to inflate and deflate their bladder to maintain buoyancy which is expelled either through their mouth or gills which can be mistaken for a fart. ... Experts say that the digestive gases of fish are consolidated with their feces and expelled in gelatinous tubes which fish sometimes eat again (eew…

Can a fish love you?

After this experimentation, scientists concluded that fish are able to recognize their owners. They can also develop a bond with their owners. Of course, not like other pet animals, but in their own way, they do love their owners, and this is quite amazing.
