The electroretinogram (ERG) is a diagnostic test that measures the electrical activity of the retina in response to a light stimulus. ... These electrodes permit the electrical activity generated by the retina to be recorded at the corneal surface.

What is an Electroretinogram test?

Electroretinography is a test to measure the electrical response of the eye's light-sensitive cells, called rods and cones. These cells are part of the retina (the back part of the eye).

What is multifocal Electroretinogram?

The multifocal electroretinogram (mfERG) is a more recent advancement in electroretinographic testing, which enables a rapid assessment of retinal function from many areas at the same time. Using a contrast-reversing stimulus. There are standard protocols for eliciting the retinal electrical response.

What is an electronegative ERG?

An electronegative electroretinogram (ERG) describes a full field ERG in which the b-wave is smaller than the normal or minimally attenuated a-wave.

What does full field ERG measure?

Full field electroretinography (ffERG) is a highly-advanced vision test that objectively measures how well your vision system is working. The results of this ERG test will help your doctor diagnose various vision disorders, as well as better understand when changes in your visual function occur.

Electroretinograms

How is an Electroretinogram performed?

An electrical sensor (electrode) is placed on each eye. The electrode measures the electrical activity of the retina in response to light. A light flashes, and the electrical response travels from the electrode to a TV-like screen, where it can be viewed and recorded.

What part of the eye is evaluated by an Electroretinogram ERG )?

An electroretinography (ERG) test, also known as an electroretinogram, measures the electrical response of the light-sensitive cells in your eyes. These cells are known as rods and cones. They form part of the back of the eye known as the retina.

Who invented the Electroretinogram?

The first human ERG was recorded in 1877 by Scottish chemist and physicist Sir James Dewar. James Dewar and John Gray McKendrick independently suggested that the biological potential was from retina. In 1908, Einthoven and Jolly divided the ERG response into three components: A-wave, B-wave, and C-wave.

What is an ERG retina?

Definition. The electroretinogram (ERG) is a diagnostic test that measures the electrical activity of the retina in response to a light stimulus. The ERG arises from currents generated directly by retinal neurons in combination with contributions from retinal glia.

What is a multifocal ERG?

Multifocal ERG uses visual stimuli from a computer screen to elicit electrical responses from different areas within the retina. The electrical energy created is measured by the Diopsys^® mfERG vision test, and used to create a report for your doctor. It is similar to an EKG, but for your eyes.

What are OCT images?

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a non-contact imaging technique which generates cross-sectional images of tissue with high resolution. Therefore it is especially valuable in organs, where traditional microscopic tissue diagnosis by means of biopsy is not available—such as the human eye.

What is pattern ERG?

Pattern electroretinography (pattern ERG) is a highly-advanced vision test that objectively measures how well your vision system is working. Information from this test will help your doctor diagnose various vision disorders, as well as better understand when changes in your visual function occur.

What is fluorescein angiography used for?

Fluorescein angiography is an eye test that uses a special dye and camera to look at blood flow in the retina and choroid. These are the two layers in the back of the eye.

How does EOG measure eye movement?

Abstract. The electrooculogram (EOG) measures the cornea-positive standing potential relative to the back of the eye. By attaching skin electrodes outside the eye near the lateral and medial canthus, the potential can be measured by having the patient move the eyes horizontally a set distance.

What is the difference between ERG and EOG?

The EOG had advantages over the ERG in that electrodes did not touch the surface of the eye. The changes in the standing potential across the eyeball were recorded by skin electrodes during simple eye movements and after exposure to periods of light and dark.

What is B wave photopic?

Purpose: The b-wave of the human photopic electroretinogram (ERG) elicited by a short-flash increases in amplitude with increasing stimulus intensities at lower stimulus levels, but then decreases at higher stimulus intensities.

What does erg stand for?

It's an acronym you should know. ERG stands for employee resource group. Other lesser used terms include affinity groups or business networking groups. Current groups offer much more than mere professional networking opportunities. ERGs can be found in 90% of Fortune 500 companies.

What is a erg in desert?

erg, also called Sand Sea, in a desert region, area of large accumulation of sand, generally in the bottom of a huge basin in which a former river piled up alluvium. Ergs are areas of actively shifting dunes, “fossilized” dunes, or extensive sand sheets. The sand is generally loose and is extremely difficult to cross.

What causes Stargardt's disease?

In most cases, Stargardt macular degeneration is caused by mutations in the ABCA4 gene. Less often, mutations in the ELOVL4 gene cause this condition. The ABCA4 and ELOVL4 genes provide instructions for making proteins that are found in light-sensing (photoreceptor) cells in the retina .

What can EOG diagnose?

The electro-oculogram (EOG) investigates abnormalities of the outermost layer of the retina, the retinal pigment epithelium, allowing the early diagnosis of some inherited macular diseases such as Best disease. The EOG is used to assess the function of the pigment epithelium.

What is ERG testing for eyes?

Full Field Electroretinography (ERG)

Specifically, this test examines the function of the light-sensitive cells of the eye (the photoreceptors), and several other cells that process these light signals before they are sent to the brain. Photoreceptors are specialized nerve cells in the eye that are sensitive to light.

What is electrophysiology Ophthalmology?

Visual electrophysiology tests are used to help detect, diagnose and evaluate a variety of visual disorders. Visual electrophysiology is a collection of advanced techniques used to test the functioning of cells along the full visual pathway – from the retina to the optic nerve to the primary visual cortex in the brain.

What is the best disease?

Best disease (Best vitelliform macular dystrophy) Best disease is a genetic condition you are born with, although it does not usually start to affect your vision until later in life. Best disease affects the macula which is part of your retina at the back of your eye which you use when reading, writing or watching TV.

What does a fundus photo show?

Fundus photographs are visual records which document the current ophthalmoscopic appearance of a patient's retina. ... Fundus photography is also used to document the characteristics of diabetic retinopathy (damage to the retina from diabetes) such as macular edema and microaneurysms.
